No doubt!

My wife thinks it's all an act, but my first instinct when looking at an attractive woman on a bike is to notice what kind of bike she is riding.

Part of it is old age, but part is something else. There are so many attractive women riding hereabouts, their bike ... rather than their legs or other stuff ... is what visually distinguishes them. The "girl on the Colnago" is a lot more specific than the "girl with the nice legs" at least around here and particularly among serious cyclists.

I guess that's a good problem. Yea, baby.

You pervert. Albeit, one with good taste. lol

I wonder how much of this rite of spring translates to the opposite sex and their observations.

My wife knows that I look, I can't (won't) lie to her.

To her it means that I am still alive.

If she wants to look I won't get bent out of shape.

There is a difference between looking and drooling. The former is OK, the latter is not. YMMV

I don't see anything strange here except that you describe the woman but not the bike. I assume it's normal for people to notice attractive people. I do it all the time. I like seeing fit bodies on bikes, male or female. And being a heterosexual man, I have an affection for the female form. But I don't normally talk about it. In fact, I like seeing so-called unfit bodies on bikes, too. Active people just look good to me.

I work at a college, but it's a small, urban campus built on a steep hill, so few people here ride bikes. I ride to work, though.

I get what the OP means. That's what happens when you reach the age where you know she ain't gonna be lookin' back so you just take your time appreciating the bicycle. At least that can't get you into trouble.

It's like being at the dog park. You know the dog's name, not the person. You recognize the dog and wouldn't know the person if you bumped into them. It's an "affinity-focus" that has to be satisfied before your eyes and mind can move on.

Actually, I get a lot of young women smiling at me lately. I don't know what that's about. I'm trying to divert my eyes, because I don't want to seem like some pervert, and they're smiling at me.

I'm 56. When my father was 55, he told him it happened to him a lot. His theory was that it's the age at which society thinks a man is his best looking, but I'm not saying these young women think I'm hot. That was my father's theory. But it's a nice fantasy.

The attraction to a) comely riders of the other gender and b) comely bikes, is a natural thing, don't overthink it. The only thing that is wrong with the OP is that he was "driving", which is the worst way to enjoy the scenery. IMO, the right way would be to take in the objects of his affection on a bicycle and maintain a respectful distance. Who knows, a pleasant conversation might even ensue.

I think perhaps it's a function of having reached the age that you are decidedly and clearly out of the market, so young women feel more free to be friendly without fear that it will be mistaken as an invitation for anything more.

Killjoy!!!!!

Reminds me that here at work, a little while ago a young(er than me) nurse asked me why my arms were so tan but my hands were not.

My wife would say it's because I'm not spending enough time doing yard work.

I was once asked about my tanlines by an older lady:

I was once asked if I am a golfer from that pattern, but I think golfers only wear a glove on one hand.

I used to do a lot of work in Aruba. In Aruba, men in their 50's are in high demand from women in their 20's. The reason? In Aruba, affluent men have wives near their own age -- for producing children -- but they have mistresses less than half their age that they travel with and on whom they spend money. It's culturally understood there. Part of the deal. (But they still try to avoid parties where both women could possibly show up.)

Just curious... do the mistresses become wives, or are the wives always wives (considering the range of child-bearing years)?.... and does anyone ride bikes there?

1. From what I saw, the wives stay wives for life. I'm not sure what happens to the mistresses after their "sell by" date. I never met a mistress who appeared to be 35 or older.

2. Does anyone ride bikes there? Yes. Aruba has a national cycling team. The weather is almost always 80*, day or night, year round. It doesn't rain much. But . . . it is always extremely windy, there are no hills (or even overpasses), and the native foliage drops large thorns -- often onto the road surfaces.

@Jim from Boston, there is a bike shop in Yonkers, near where I work, that has a large stock of gloves from 30 or 40 years ago with the crocheted back. I'm jes' sayin'.

Thanks, @Tom, but I wear Planet Bike gloves, readily available in Boston (they have Velcro closures ).
