I’ve participated in our local TT’s at Charlotte Motor Speedway for over 15 years. I actually put them on for about 10 of those years. Our niche was a 10 mile TT. At one time we ran both the 10 mile and also a 40k TT simultaneously. Riders kept asking us to have the 40k until they actually rode in one and realized just how difficult it was.
To be competitive you really must train specifically for that type of event. It seems logical, but my best times occurred when I was most fit for high HR riding. Over the years I’ve migrated to more endurance events or longer rides at a little lower HR. I can still do a decent TT but not close to a PR.
I think my best PR at 10 miles was 26+ mph or 22+ mins. Our track record was 30+ mph. We still have 65+ aged fellas doing 21 min 10 milers. One of which is a National Champion.
TT’s done well are hard. At my best my HR would average 180 bpm for the 10 miles......my peak HR was 194.
We have been very fortunate to have access to the 1 1/2 mile track for our events.
