BITD the leaner I became the better I climbed - and then the more I climbed the better I climbed (and then progressed to the point where I actually liked to climb)
now / decades later - excess weight certainly is a killer when climbing - especially the steeper stuff ; the steeper the climbs the more (my excess) weight becomes a big negative
I can slog my way up the longer climbs (with proper gearing) - often not pretty / too slow - but when the climbs become steeper it can be blow-up time
