RidewithGPS allows you to set an interval, so it's only updated every 1 or 5 minutes. That feature sure saves on the phone's battery (and data, too, if you care). Downside is it's a hassle to set it up for the wife; I have to log into her computer or tablet for live logging to work. Strava's beacon is a text to her smart phone, click on the link, and she's tracking me.

And neither works at all if you forget to click at least three times on different buttons before you start riding.
I think the "Beacon" feature is worth the money, although I also get the "where are you" messages when I've stopped to visit with someone. I also like the feature which lets you filter the results by age. It makes me feel better, and my phone battery still lasts all day. And it's by far the most popular sports tracking app in our area.

I use Strava free app. It works great for me and syncs to my new Apple watch so if I forget my phone, I still have my Strava with me. I am thinking about the upgrade because since my accident(BAD!) my wife worries about me.This would allow her to track me while I ride and give her a little peace of mind. Joe

I have a Garmin Edge 1000 that I always use on whichever bike I'm riding. It can talk Bluetooth with my smartphone and at the end of a ride it uploads to Garmin and from there is pushed to Strava. I also use it via my running watch. I'm basically just competitive "in my own mind," but I find it useful for the following:

1) The predefined "segments" on the popular routes in the area let me see how I'm doing vs. past performance and also (Premium) in my age group. The latter is really not all that useful since not many people in the 70-74 AG are techie enough to be using Strava.

2) I'm able to see how various friends locally and all over the country are doing in their running and cycling. It's nice to exchange "thumbs up" on particularly good performances.

3) I can download others' interesting-looking routes and load them into my Garmin to try out.

4) Having my cumulative riding and running stats satisfies the number-geek inside of me.

I don't find it in the least inconvenient to use any of these types of products, and even find them to be motivators to get out there and go. As the saying goes: "If it isn't on Stava, it didn't happen!"

Which is why I refuse to honot WWII vets ..... don't believe we ever went to the moon, and refuse to believe in BikeForums.

Strava is on BF ... but BF isn't on Strava.

Yes, Beacon works well, my wife likes and gives me the evil eye if I forget to send it.
There similar apps but if you're using Strava anyway..

That way i don't have to share every 13-mile ride at 13 mph---I just hit the good ones, or the longer, more challenging rides I might repeat, to compare to past performances and such. I don't need people giving me "kudos" if I went around the block to see if my derailleurs were adjusted right.

RideWithGPS seems easier for planning routes, and tracking routes ... and everything can be swapped back and forth anyway. I like it better ... but then, i am old,. I am not part of the "conected" generation that has to post every morsel of food consumed, and such. Strava is much more social and much better for people who like to compete with friends and strangers.

Check out the free RideWithGPS download, and if you don't like it, toss it, i guess.
Same here...I liked it so much, I signed up for the premium version. I just love the interface on both the phone app and web. And I find it very full featured, but intuitive and easy to use. And, no, they aren't paying me to say that...but if they want to, I'm OK with that *wink* *wink*

I've used MapMyRide and Strava, with a brief trial of BikeComputer.

Currently using Strava (free version) and it works pretty well. I do occasionally get some wierd stuff (pauses mid ride, etc). I've disabled the auto pause, and that seems to help, but now I occasionally forget to re-start if I pause manually.

For those who don't want every strava ride to get posted, the app lets you either post it privately, or you can simply not save it.

Thanks for you input all. Canyoneagle, how did you turn off the auto pause? I can not find it on my phone/Strava/settings?
Frank.

Aha, yes. Good question.
It is accessible in the options once you hit the "record" button. Sneaky.

Odd, I started out on MapMyRide, but at that time, no auto-pause and I routinely forgot to restart when I stopped. Switched to Strava to get auto-pause.

Strava free app

I used to use the free app but we have about 20 75+ folks out here that are really competitive. Keeping track of these "geezers" is critical as too many of them can beat me. It is an incentive to use power meter training to stay near the front and succeed in first once in awhile.
