Relief!!!

After weeks in the 90’s we had over a week of heavy rain storms, winds and generally awful weather. Today relief. Sunny and cool this morning. 63F at 7AM. It’s warmed up and will hit the mid 80s later today, but now it’s fantastic.

I guess we’ve earned the break

Since 1 liter of water weighs 1 kg, 6 lbs comes out to 2.72 liters of water. Add the 1 liter of water I drank along the way and I lost just under 1 U.S. gallon of fluids in two hours.....

Needless to say, I gained the weight back pretty quickly
5 or 6 pounds is typical for me on a hot ride of 5+ hours. The time I came home 11 pounds lighter I really felt bad. I start off around 200 these days.

It's not just sweat, we lose water through breathing, too.

11 lbs? Ugh....I bet you felt like crap. I think I got a touch of heatstroke a couple of weeks ago when I got started a bit later than expected. The heat comes on quickly once the sun comes up out here in the desert. My entire body felt...damaged

I was out in Calabassas last Saturday, and the heat chewed me up pretty good. I dunno if it is the long course in antibiotics, a lot of time of the bike, or just getting old, but that heat gets to me a lot worse than it used to. I was done after only 30 miles or so, and GLAD to be done and in an air conditioned car.

I did Hidden Valley that day, hoping to knock down about 40 miles with a loop around Dos Vientos. After having to change a flat in HV, I suddenly noticed the heat was on full intense mode! Turned back at Treasure Hill and was happy to get home with 26 miles and a heartbeat!

I did. It was a long climbing ride and I didn't have nearly enough water early and then I had nausea which made it hard to drink. A lady on the ride gave me something, a Prilosec, maybe, and it got worse. At the end I had trouble walking 100 feet from my car to a bathroom to change clothes because I didn't want to hurl in front of the people at the park. I shouldn't have driven my car, I was so out of it, but I got a Super Big Gulp and it helped a lot.

A few weeks later I did the same ride and pounded water and there was sag in the mountains and I had a great time.

You seemed to be fine that day we rode Yerba Buena, it wasn't as hot as this weekend, though.

This past Saturday I rode the mtb for 3 hours starting from home before 7:00. I went up to Camp 9 and it was nice up there in the morning. I drained the 100oz Camelbak and refilled it at Camp 9 and drank most of that.

Maybe I'll get up early tomorrow and go up to Camp 9 again.
