I知 bike era and equipment agnostic I guess. . . .
I also have a vintage steel PX10 (1972?) with bar ends. Currently running period correct components other than a nine speed cassette on modern wheels. I致e ridden bar ends for years. Every once in a while I値l bump the right shifter when climbing out of the saddle. That痴 when I know I知 tired. The vintage handlebars are super narrow and every ride takes me a few minutes to get used to that. . . .

Narrow bars, on a road bike, are most comfortable for me.
When I bend slightly forward and let my arms and hands hang naturally, I get about a 35-36cm spacing. I ride 38s, 36's are near impossible to find.
On a tandem, gravel or mountain bike considerations other than optimal comfort are overriding.
