First 100km Event in Years

Today, I did my first 100 km cycling event in years.

In early March 2018, I did a 300 km cycling event with Rowan (my husband) … a couple weeks later, he had the accident that changed our lives.

In 8 years, I haven't done a cycling event longer than 75 km.

This is my second 100 km in the last few weeks (the first one was just a casual attempt to see if I could do it, not an event).

I am thrilled I can do them again, and at my age, but I am struggling with the last 15 km or so. I suspect I'm not eating enough. And I suspect I need to do 120+ km so that 100 km feels easier.

How's Rowan doing?
If you're riding then things might be improving?
Cycling... a great therapy for us all...

Rowan is doing better than he was last year.

Last February he had surgery to join the Achilles tendon in his left ankle back together!

He cycled 30 km while I cycled 100 km on Sunday.

Good job on the ride. Keep at if you can. I generally don't ride in "events," they tend to be too fast, too slow, or too crowded, though there are a couple I like to take part in. On longer rides (100km +), I'll usually eat something at the two-thirds distance mark, by which time I'm usually starting to feel the distance. The food and the rest give me a second wind, and my final miles are usually my strongest.

I'm thinking one of my issues was the heat. I was sweating up a storm, and although I was eating some, during the last third of the ride, it felt like everything was sitting like a lump in my stomach and not digesting.

Yesterday, I picked up salt tablets because I might have needed to up my electrolytes.

You have been a constant and an inspiration. I am thrilled you can get back to riding, and I am thrilled that Rowan continues to recover.

Congratulations to you and am glad to hear Rowan is doing better. It appears you are learning the same lesson I had to about hydration and nutrition on long rides. A couple of years ago I would be absolutely wiped out and staring into space after long rides, but have since upped my fluid intake (electrolyte and carb mix) and always pack along energy bars and a gel or two. What a world of difference when the body has fuel, liquid, and probably in your case additional salt.

Keep up the good work and best wishes for Rowan

This Spring I hope I can start working m way up again, if I can get respite care for my wifeš needed care. But that plan to have something significant to eat at the 60% mark. I always thought it was not ok to eat something substantial at the 33 mile out of 4o mile mark!

Congrats!

I have the issues riding in hot weather as well. I used to rather enjoy it, but no more ...
