The Mergenthaler Linotype. The reason nearly all materials (books, newspapers, magazines) printed up until the 70's were produced in columns about 3.66" wide.

Gutenberg invented moveable type, Ottmar Mergenthaler invented the machine that could cast the type fast enough to print a daily paper.

My first job out of college was for a check printing company still printing at 42 plants with Linotypes until the late 80's when we converted to offset lithography.

From 1889 to 1989 quite a few of us had type metal in our veins...literally.

Customized cars were it! George Barris is God!

How could you resist a Cox Chapparal Slot Car. I couldn't; not after seeing him win at Sebring in 1964.

When Men were Men, dashboards were made of steel. We didn't need no stinkin' airbags or seatbelts.

Nope, that came later and revolutionized automobile racing. But I never had the 2E model, and I didn't see Jim Hall win Sebring in it.

But there you go.

My highest google-ranking web page is on the Avanti. It's ranked #5 on Google. Born in Palm Springs

Is that a "New" one or an "Old" one?

My favortie slot car was the Cox Chapparal! Cast magneseum frame, etc. I rewound the motor down to 1.5 volts of resisitance. Added "Tates" rear tires...the kind you soaked in wintergreen oil to make them tacky.

I met Jim Hall in the early 80's, and really had to bite my tounge about that slot car. I'm sure that's the last thing he wanted to talk about!

I asked, "How the heck do you spindle a card?" Stumped an entire room full of Computer Science majors.

One of the saddest sights I ever saw was a CS major trying to collect an entire mail tray full of cards (a program assignment) that had been spilled on Lindsey Street on the way to the computer room at Dale Hall. The wind was blowing, and it was way too late to start the assignment over. (shudder)

It was usually quicker to repunch a run of cards than to resequence a dropped tray/box of cards.

I thought this was the thread that never ends...it ends everytime someone does not keep it going. ... so does that means it ends, then starts again... ... or it is just a pause in going forward ... ... or is there some other philosophical idea that fits better... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...peace
