No way. I drink sparingly and very seldom, but the thought of riding while under the influence of any amount is scary...

I had a friend beat a drunk driving(cycling) charge because the judge did not believe that a drunk cyclist could have stayed upright. He had been nailed doing 35 in a 25 zone when the cop smelled his breath. The officer was so hot to book him for DUI he forgot to charge him for speeding.

Smoked many a Doob during my formitive years with a device called a no smoker toker, which allowed one to smoke easily while riding.

I live in a resort town and I confess I've gotten home got into bed and woke up not remembering the ride home. Also the only time I ever hit my head was when I got all the way home and tried a track stand.

I've only ridden drunk around Christmas time. Here in Vancouver, it's pretty cool weather, especially at night, during the Holiday Season, so even after a few drinks at the Christmas party, you get on the bike and you're stone sober after about two kilometers. It's pretty interesting running on alcohol metabolism. You get winded very quickly indeed. I once hit a police roadblock while cycling under the influence (CUI?). The cops just waved me thru, they didn't even want to smell my breath...

A friend of mine once told me a story about how he and a friend back in England had a few too many at the pub. They got on their bikes to ride home. My friend really felt bad because he was so drunk and could hardly control his bike, while his friend seemed to be under control. Anyway, my friend made it home OK. Next day, his wife told him that his friend's wife had called to tell her that his friend did make it home - with a completely demolished bicycle. He was so drunk he'd ridden into something and completely destroyed the bike...

They used to have a completely unsanctioned bike race around here called "So You Think Yo' Tough." You rode around this loop, but you'd have to stop each lap and down a can of beer. Last man standing won. Hey, this is Canada. "I am Canadian!"

Also, one must appreciate the irony of Monoborracho's remarks. For those who don't know, "borracho" is Spanish for "drunk." "!Despues la carrera, todo borracho!" (After the race, completely drunk!)

A few times home from a pub. What I have done (too many times) when I was much younger and really fit, was ski after having a few. We thought it was really fun, we even carried wine with us as we skied. Looking back on it it was pretty dangerous.

I have indeed heard stories regarding inebriated bicyclists, but I personally advocate abstaining from alcohol before operating any vehicle on a public roadway.

I don't drink alcohol either, Tom, and have never ridden, driven, walked or run while intoxicated or under the influence of legal or illegal drugs. So, I can add nothing to this thread, except that I think it is a poor policy to drink/get drunk and do much of anything else that involves or endangers others.

A guy I went to high school with became an alcoholic later in life. He rode his bike, drunk, onto a major freeway and was killed. I feel so bad for the people that hit him... and for him, too. But more for the people that hit him.

I once hit a pedestrian. I was coming home from work, and was getting on the freeway entrance ramp. A drunk guy came out of the bushes on the freeway side where he was peeing. I put him in the car and drove him to the hospital (I was working a late shift at the children's home and it was about 2 am). He kept apologizing for bleeding all over my car. When I got to the hospital with him, they took him away and I waited around trying to find a cop to file a report with. I waited about an hour for one to show up, and he was there for something else previously.

I told him my story, and he just said, "don't worry about it, he's a drunk".

I thought he should have at least taken my name and number, but I did the best I could.

Yeah, but at least they're predictible. I guess that's what throws me, is when someone does something totally unexpected and you don't even have time to react...

People who don't drink worry me only because I wonder if I should drink in front of them..., or I wonder if they'll be offended if there's wine at dinner.

Some of my friends love my non-drinking ... like when we go to sporting events or concerts. They know I'm driving home and they can have at it.

Around here a few of the folks caught for DUI actually give up driving when they lose their driver's license and look for alternative transportation. But they don't give up drinking, so you often hear of guys caught riding their bike or lawn while intoxicated (if it gets reported). They are typically caught while headed to the liquor store.

Actually, I don't drink but I tell people that when I ride my bike I'm practicing in case I get a DUI.

I really have no problem with people drinking around me. In fact I enjoy watching them get happy. I personally don't like people being intolerant of drinking.

Like the stone sober high school mountain bikers who dashed out in front of me and made me throw a perfectly good 2006 Yamaha FZ-1 onto the pavement?

I used to play a lot of golf, and every Sunday morning was the real event with lots of money changing hands and loads of beer afterwards. One day after more than a dozen beers I decided to play another round (it was an unbelievably perfect summer evening). I thought I was pretty good back then. I had to quit after 6 holes because I had lost every ball in my bag (maybe two dozen).

That sort of cured me from trying anything requiring any physical dexterity while drunk (except bean-bags)
