Determined to be the last person in America to buy an Ipod, I just purchased a Sandisc Sansa Rhapsody MP3 player. I put all that I usually listen to on it and still have tons of space. Who is listening to what these days? Suggestions like Barry Manilow will be dealt with harshly.

Don't mince words
Me, too!
Our kids gave us each an iPod Nano for Christmas. In a month I had too much music on it. That forced me to create playlists, a handy tool for when I create ride profiles for my Spinning classes. Like many of you I have a wide variety of tunes -- Fleetwood Mac ("Penguin"), Cream, Joplin, Climax Blues Band, Roy Buchanan, Moby, Banco de Gaia, INXS, and so on. No Barely Maneough, but I do have some BeeGees. "Nights on Broadway" is a terrific hill climbing song.
Never use it on the road but it's a lifesaver for indoor training & podcast-listening when I engage in subcortical housewifey activities (aka ironing, weeding, cleaning, etc.).
I have a conversion program on my laptop so I can record LPs and tapes into my iTunes library. We have about 400 LPs, so I can go without buying music for a long, long time.
Love the iPod!

Here's a few of my favorites that work well for cycling, some are good tempo songs, others good suffering songs, others yet just take me to that happy place in my mind

I have a wireless audio device that can download streaming audio providing random selections of music, as well as sports, and news reports. No computer is ever required nor is there ever a need to plug the device into a computer running propriety software required to activate the downloaded audio content. Some of these audio players have mass storage capability allowing the user to store streaming audio for later use with no limits or additional costs. These wireless audio devices are available everywhere at very low cost. There are no fees associated with the use of these audio devices.
Can you guess what this device is?

This is a sample of what I have loaded on my MP3 player that I like:
Gretchen Wilson -- All Jacked Up.
Brad Paisley -- Ticks
Whiskey Falls -- Last Train Running.
Weather Report -- Birdland.
The Who -- Baba O'Reilly.
Talking Heads -- Once in a Lifetime.
Spiderbait -- Black Betty.
Porcupine Tree -- The Sound of Muzak.
Miriam Stockley -- Morte d'Arthur
Bach -- 6th Brandenburg Concerto.
And a ton of stuff by Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke.
The only problem with any of the above is I've listened to them a tad too much, so I'm looking for new blood.

Ah, TWL knows about Porcupine Tree ... excellent. I have three of their CDs. My favorite genre of music is progressive rock - I must own about 20 Yes CDs.
I'll second momof4's John Fogerty's suggestion. That whole live album of his, released upon his comeback of a few years ago, is excellent.
I love blues too, and blues-rock - I have two Allman Brothers CDs in my car for traveling music.
Unlike others here, I tend to listen to entire albums, or even multiple albums from an artist, rather than mix up playlists with a variety of singles. Once I get into the mood to listen to a certain artist, I like listening to an hour or two from them.

I have the same iPod...... I guess I'm way underusing it. Gotta put more tunes and stuff on it.
RedRider, would you mind telling me about the conversion program on your laptop? Hubby has many old LPs and has a desire to do the same.

I've had a RIO 500 for years (129MB MMC card). I've recently tie-wrapped a set of battery powered speakers to my helmet and listen to audible books on the commute to work. Last week was Dune.
I get a few odd looks - and a lot of people I overtake know I'm coming. Some roadies get a little distraught when they can't seem to shake me but I'm not slowing down to accommodate them.

Bought an IPod for my Daughter for her birthday in April and thought I might pick one up for myself for working out and stationary bike time. I finally got around to shopping for my own last week, but when I was looking at them realized that I'm too out-of-date to use one...all the MP3's I looked at required Windows XP and I'm still operating Windows 98. When I mentioned this to the kid showing these MP3's to me he looked at me like I had just walked out of a cave wearing a loincloth. Sigh...
If I had one though, it would have blues, jazz, old rock n roll and classic country.

I have a small piece of hardware (a pre-amp, I assume) that allows me to plug my turntable and cassette deck into my computer. It was about $70 from DAK. It works great. Software is downloaded and includes a "depopper and dehisser" and an equalizer. It makes great digital music from your old analog stuff. I, too, have 400+ LPs and and as many cassettes, many of which I have converted.

Oh Oh OH!
I Love my ipod! I have hours and hours and hours of Alan Watts on it and mostly listen to it when the late night radio is too iritating or horrifying to calm me while I wait to go back to sleep.

Love my mp3 player, I will not buy an Ipod, (I don't know why). Anyway I tend to go on tangents and listem to the same artist until I get tiried of it. Right now I into a little known Canadian, Ron Sexsmith man can this guy write songs. Other tangents Tom Waits, The Pouges, Great Big Sea, Rawlins Cross.

I borrowed an iPod from ITS at the University a couple of years ago to develop a podcast program for the Dean. It sat in my desk at work for most of the year except to test the program and really didn't appeal to me as a music storage device since I couldn't stand the earbuds. Maybe it also was because it wasn't as user-friendly as I would have liked.
I have also become rather weary of contemporary pop, country, and "oldies' music that gets played over and over and over again. I have recently been listening to "unknown" indie bands and music that I find more stimulating than same-old rut "music" that music companies tend to force down our throats.
I find that the exploration and discovery of new bands on the Internet is much more fun than listening to Barry Manilow belt out Copacabana for the umteenth time. Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy.
That said, my iTunes library has 621 songs, 2 days and 6.14 GB of eclectic music ranging from everything to everything not.

Others who like PT like Rush or Dream Theater.
And I've read some positive reviews of a group named Blackfield from people who like PT and Pink Floyd. Steven Wilson of PT also sings with Blackfield. But I've never heard any of their music. Now that I'm thinking of it, I should order a CD from them and check them out.

We have some classical LPs recorded in Hungary in the 60s that you just can't get anywhere, and I can't wait to convert them.
First I have to convert my CC&R, Cream, Led Zepplin, Beatles, you know, those feel-good and rockin' songs from a couple generations ago.

No way Jose would I have anything in my ears that would prevent me from hearing the pickup truck that has my name on it. My luck, that pickup truck will probably also have the word (Dodge) Ram on it. I get enjoyment from the non-electronic sounds while on the bike as well.
But still being in the Fred-category of bikers, I could listen to this themesong in one ear while riding: "Flinstones, Meet the Flintstones..."
Here is a recent photo of me when I renewed my driver's license this year.
