Faffing is one thing; music and the appreciation of good music (mostly R&B for me) is another. Van Morrison was best (IMO) when he was a member of Them (Mystic Eyes, One, Two Brown Eyes, Gloria, etc.) in the early 60's but Brown Eyed Girl was really good blue eyed soul.

I think ILTB has it right. Anyone who can identify a Van the Man song from just a set of unconnected shoob shoobs is very welcome and a senior contributor in my book.

And anyway, just today I told my department to stop faffing around and get on with their work. They were grateful for the guidance. It's what makes me such a popular leader.

ILTB: Really, Clearly you have a lot to contribute here. I think sometimes the expectations of the "Bike Forums" title need to be put aside sometimes.

Amazingly, there may be more to life than bicycling. Just pulled some Van M off the server for a little listening.

I heard a Van Morrison recording on a public radio program the other day in which the syllable he was singing was actually "Blah, blah, blah..." -- could he maybe be spoofing himself in that one?

Could it be that one mans faffing is music to another mans ears.

Have no doubt about this............everybody has something to contribute to this forum. The free exchange of seemingly random information on the internet is its principal strength..............if you can survive the encounter.

I agree. I grew up with Van Mo as background music to my youth.

I think faff is in the eye of the reader, or beholder, if you will. I enjoy the friendly banter on this forum, even if we tend to go OT at a moment's notice. If someone's faff is irrelevant to me I move on. Mostly I enjoy reading about everyone else's experiences. We're nothing if not diverse.

I still have my scratched up 45 record of it. It was Brown Eyed Girl 1967 by Van Morrison, one of my brown eyed girl friend's and my favorite songs of 1967 and 1968:

Hey where did we go,
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow,
Playin' a new game,
Laughing and a running hey, hey
Skipping and a jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our hearts a thumpin' and you
My brown eyed girl,
You my brown eyed girl.

Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow
Going down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing,
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall,
Slipping and sliding
All along the water fall, with you
My brown eyed girl,
You my brown eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing,
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da

So hard to find my way,
Now that I'm all on my own.
I saw you just the other day,
My how you have grown,
Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown eyed girl
You my brown eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da.

Good get, ILTB. I'd not have picked that from "fa-fafa-fafa-fa", despite how intimately I know that song.

How intimately?

Not only has it been a 'lifelong' party favourite, but more recently it became the tune playing as I carried my little granddaughter's coffin from the chapel, softly singoing along in accompaniment to sertenade her with it one last time, and substituting the lyric

Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout
Lovin you midst the green grass
By the river with you
My brown eyed girl
You my brown eyed girl

If the stuff of life's joys, sorrows and diversions is "faffing" then "faffing is about the most important thing we do.
