I went to a hill today called Malhao that is a 10% 2.5km burn often included in the annual Volta ao Algarve pro tour. Not long but a challenging one.
Total ride was 100km and 1400m ( 62miles, 4593ft) A warm up for a longer, hard day tomorrow. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7e38bb289.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e2fa07bb5.jpeg |
A couple of days late, but crashed on a ride Saturday (grass clippings on a curve, and I wasn't paying attention). Luckily I ended up in the grass and weeds before I hit the ground. No road rash, no head strike, and just a few bruises, so I got back on the proverbial horse and did 26 miles on Sunday to work out the stiffness. It took a full 10 miles before I felt right, but it was a beautiful day in North Texas.

18 miles. 95 degrees. Sunday it was 60-65 during my ride....
|
I rode 20 miles with 1,242 ft of elevation gain. Average speed was 11.3 mph. I'm slow. I've only gotten back on the bike about 3 weeks ago. Trying to build up some fitness. Heck, I'm too slow to even do group rides. I'm trying to put in a minimum of 50 miles each week. More if I can make it happen.

Nice little 136km and 2558m today for me. (84.5 miles and 8400ft). Rode with two friends, lovely weather, beautiful scenery.

39 miles and about 40% gravel. At 91 degrees shade and cold water were most welcome! Dust just seems more dusty the hotter it gets!?!?!

Recovery Ride...Glide
Today's ride was one of necessity thanks to COVID-19. It was time to take the car in for scheduled maintenance and their lobby was closed: I couldn't wait on site. Walking from there wasn't an attractive option either, so I brought a bike along(SuperSix w/full Campy Record) and in full kit went for a 16 mile, one hour recovery ride, to a favored coffee house where I pulled up a table outside, enjoyed a brew, and waited for the call to come pick the car up.
16 miles, 16.1 mph ave. 22.6 mph max. 121bpm ave. 103w ave. Miles, smiles, and tailwinds. RW https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f12956e837.jpg |
I decided to take a few days off work, and decided to break out the Camelbak for a mid day ride in the heat on the Motobecane GT. 98 degree heat index at 1pm. Still better than the air conditioning and sitting in front of a computer...

My same 14 mile ride, but today was different, I could spins much long then before. And it felt good, heart rate in 140's today

12.2 miles with first 5.5 against headwind https://www.strava.com/activities/3574113671
And best of all I am still standing. |
102 miles with 5000’ of climbing from our house to the in-laws. It’s their 67th wedding anniversary. My FIL bought himself a new super comfortable recliner that will lift him to a standing position. My MIL bought herself a lift chair for her bath tube so she can resume taking baths instead of showers. It’s what folks in their 90s do with their stimulus checks! My wife brought them a special meal for the 4 of us to enjoy. It was really good especially the carrot cake for dessert!! I never feel guilty eating lots and especially sweets. Just ride it off!
2 turtle saves today including a really tiny fella. Lots of interesting farm animals including two colts, a young and energetic calf, a donkey and lots of goats. I tried a new BBQ spot for lunch and it was fabulous. I could actually sit inside and enjoy the AC for a bit. Also tried some new roads from there to the in-laws. Mostly rural but one stretch of busy faster traffic. I rode a little slower after lunch to let the hush puppies settle plus it was really warming up......almost 90 with our Carolinas humidity. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f703696cc.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...edc020daf.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f407bb760.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8177ed71e.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...175e06977.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3e4df9cf7.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cba230414.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b4c097e21.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4e97a2e9f.jpeg |
25 miles today, longest ride of the year. I was a little cold, but I was strong all the way. Wind against me going North, with me coming home.
On almost every other ride this year, my heart rate has been lower coming South than going North. There's a slight downhill that probably contributes a lot to that. Today, on the ride home, I kept getting messages from my computer that my heart rate was over 150. It ranged from high 130s and into the 150s almost all the way home. I felt for my pulse – the HRM was right. The downside is that I wore a shirt I love, and it won’t be usable by me for much longer. I started using it just last year, and it’s almost too big now. Terribly sad, but, you know, it was a nice ride anyway.... Not bad for an almost 76 year old never-athlete. |
Ride to church on my Raleigh Talus 29er (with road tread)
https://www.strava.com/activities/3579946469 Ride home from church on my Raleigh Talus 29er https://www.strava.com/activities/3579946532 Rode to church and back today on my Raleigh Talus 29er hardtail mountain bike. The wind was brutal, but I made it (thank goodness for a triple chain ring). |
Just over 50 miles with one kick @ss climb. Thank god for that 34 cog.

Another 30 miler on my Roubaix. Nice pleasant mid 80s afternoon with a slight cool breeze..
|
I did 34.4 miles this afternoon. I managed to drink all the water I brought with me, which I have not done even on longer rides. I blame the fact that it got up to 100°f in the Sun. Fortunately, the route I picked was mostly shaded. Mostly. I debated whether to soldier on and see Horseshoe Lake, but decided against it.

I'm 71 and the nyc subway is dangerous for me so I've been commuting to work by bike since mid-March. Takes a little longer but there are things to see.

I rode 15.5 miles on Sunday...a typical ride for me. I'm 75 and just trying to keep in shape. On a paved bike trail across a local inlet. But... I hit a girl on a skateboard... I approached a family heading toward me...two parents and two school kids. The girl middle school age. Both kids on skateboards... I know to be careful... I slowed...unhooked my foot from the pedal...the girl moved from the left side (where her family was) as I approached, then stayed on the right... As I started to pass in between, the girl suddenly steered back across about one foot in front my my front tire. I went down...the girl stepped off the skateboard. No injured by shaken up. Me...I had a roadrash on my left knee and shin. And, I discovered a mile later I had lost my mirror from my handlebar drops. I'm fine... no stiffness... but, I think I've gotta just stop when i'm aproaching kids on skateboards.

That's a drag. Kids can be dangerous to a biker's health. And to a bike's.
22+ miles, sunny, mid-70s temp, windy. Nice ride. Lots of sun predicted for next 9 days, but lots of wind, too. |
Since it was just the geezers last night, I'll drop this here :) 25 miles / 16.9 ave with wind - always wind in the country

Up in the hills this morning testing out my first ever dropper post. Sure is night and day on the downhills!

No riding for me the last few days. I took this photo from my front lawn, and have asthma. Riding and smoke from forest fires doesn't work so well for me. That's a DC-10 Tanker working a fire greater than 3,000 acres in size. Other riders from my club are out there and good for them. Maybe tomorrow or Friday for me. Edit to add: BTW, that's a low quality save done by this site. My image isn't in the least bit grainy, but what I see displayed here sure is, anyway, you can still get the idea of what the last few days have been like. |
