I was able yesterday to get out and ride for 26 miles. Hopefully today I will be able to get some riding in. Though right now there is fog. The fog usually clears a bit later in the morning. But since it gets warm fast after the clearing of the fog I typically don't start later. I should talk myself into going out soon.

Got out yesterday - 42*, hazy sunshine, bit windy. Winter garb and riding the big easy beastie. Only ~12 miles, but stayed low traffic. Too many trucks on my backroads during the week.

Finally a small break in our crazy weather. Ground is so saturated, there are run-offs all over the place= dirty bike. Such spotty riding so far this year.

Sunday was chilly but hazy sunshine when I started; soon faded to full overcast and dang cold. Glad I packed the windbreaker, and leg warmers to go over knickers w/ long socks. ~35mi = longest of the year. It was a mostly flat ride ;).

I biked Mauna Kea last Monday (Feb 27) . I rode the 'easy' route, starting at Waikōloa Beach (Kona side), I made it to the Mauna Kea Visitor Center (elev 9,200 ft / 2,800 m) and despite feeling OK, I knew that I wouldn't make it to the summit (it took me 6 hours to cover the easy part of the climb). In the last mile to the visitor's center, the road holds 17% and kicks to 18%. The summit road was closed when I arrived, but opened after about 30 minutes, then we drove our Jeep to the summit.
I'm working on a revisit, possible starting at the beach again; or likely starting at Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Rd). This climb is as epic as everything you've read, and to add to the challenge, you're riding mostly highways with high traffic speeds and LOTS of it! I'm working on a blog post and YouTube edit, I'll share that in a week or two. Starting off a little after 6:00 AM at Waikōloa Beach ... this was one of the most difficult parts of the day, finding the public access to the beach. Nothing spectacular, but warmth in PNW caught me wanting to ride a bunch. So I did a 20 miler, then pulled out a few more to pump tires and take three neighborhood mini-rides.

Frau Toad was supporting me, in her Jeep, she had the warm wool and wind vest for the colder temps at high elevations (and food/hydrations refills cause there's no stops along this route). At the Visitor's Center, a ranger said that in peak season (June thru September) they get roughly 5 folks on bike per week and half are able to reach the summit. That ranger is a biker and said they'd biked the Saddle Rd many times, but never considered turning up the Summit Access Rd. I never planned to ride back down, it's such a major effort and you'll run out of daylight to fully descend. Cory rode the same day, he made the summit and rode back down to the visitor's center ... his support crew didn't have a vehicle to drive to the summit. I have seen post where people ride their age on their birthday, today for the first time I rode my age on my birthday that would be 67 miles.
And now I feel my age. : ) |

This post is for yesterday. I was able to squeeze a ride into my day. I didn't have it in my plans but when one of my plans fell through, my first thought was get out on the bike. Because it was a late Friday afternoon ride I stayed on the bike path. The path had some snowy patches so there was some walking of the bike.

Rode 90 miles around Tucson yesterday, mostly solo. It was cold in the morning, 41F, when I met a couple of buddies at the Saguaro NP Scenic Drive, for two laps around the eight-mile loop. Then I rode about ten miles south on Old Spanish Trail to Colossal Cave park, then about ten more miles west on Pistol Hill Rd to intersect the Tucson Loop and back home around the city. I nearly made a ten-mile detour to San Xavier del Bac Mission, a favorite stop on the eponymous reservation, but a pretty stiff head wind picked up and I was already a bit fatigued from the fast climbs on the Saguaro loops. So the first century of the year will have to wait.
On Monday I met my 75 yo friend on his mini-tour from Nogales to Phoenix. I took him on a bakery tour in the barrios south of town, and guided him on the bike paths to the north end of town. The next day he had favorable winds and completed the 104 miles home almost effortlessly. All this with half a pancreas from surgery two years ago. I wanna be him when I grow up. (I'm only 65.) |
