First time over my 20 mile threshold. Did 30 miles with my 14 year old nephew on a portion of the Erie canal bike way from Niskayuna NY to Cohoes and back. Beautiful weather in the low 70's and beautiful scenery along the Mohawk river. Love riding. Wish I found it 40 years ago.:)

Group ride, half racers, half strong club riders. 33 miles in 1:45. Sat in the whole time, was able to close gaps and felt really comfortable. Even though I rode faster than I did on Tuesday, the group as a whole was slower. My perceived exertion was that this was a moderate ride with a couple of intervals thrown in.

The last big roller of the ride, about mile 25, I was overtaking a guy older than I; he looked back, saw me coming up on me, and moved in front of me to block me. I had to pull up to keep from hitting him and got gapped and couldn't catch up. >hissyfit< Don't play race tactics in a non-race ride if you don't race. >fumes<

Otherwise I had a great ride and am stoked for Saturday's race. Last road race of the season...just as I'm peaking...maybe there's a fast century in my future. :roflmao2:

A pleasant 5 mile pre-dawn commute to work. I'm 16 miles short of 700 for the month with a rainy forcast for the next few days.....

Did a solo 105 miles on my recumbent (VK2) yesterday. Easy ride with a 17.2 mph average.

I've always wondered how much of a workout a recumbent is compared to a standard road bike. I know recumbents are more efficient (aero) and the rider supports even less weight than on a road bike. So what percentage would the difference be? Has anyone ever come up with a number? For instance, I can ride 20mph on the flat at around 175-180 watts. What power would it take to do that on a recumbent? And since the rider's weight is supported, the body has less work to do and therefore will expend even less energy. So I also wonder about total calorie expenditure. I'm certainly not making this a which is better debate, I'm just interested in the energy issues.

I have no idea how much energy can be saved - maybe 15%? Don't know. Here's the bike I was riding:

Friday 8/28/09... Got started early and at about the 5 mile mark I remembered something that had to be done at home so I turned around and went back. Only 10.53 miles today. Shortest ride in almost 2 years. Tomorrow will be a better day
All is well in slo spoke Jim's' household. :thumb:

10.53 (s)miles today
659.41 (s)miles this month
4,405.92 (s)miles this year

Having ridden 600+ miles in June and then again in July I felt a challenge to ride at least 600 in August. I have successfuly met and surpased that challange...I hit 700 miles on my 17 mile wandering ride home this evening and celebrated by stopping along the way for an Ice Cream. There are still two more commuting opportunities and maybe a 20 mile breakfast run left in August. This could end even higher and is definately my highest one month total ever. :)

Usual commute to school and back. Was a pretty morning, and just the right temp for a ride. Coming home was hotter, but still quite nice. Denver area this time of year is quite an enjoyable place.

No. My daughter's visiting so we stayed up late with her last night. Off to work at 04:00a.m. today. Brought along a change of nice clothes as the three of us are going out to dinner directly after work... my bride, my daughter, and myself. May ride a bit tomorrow.

I'm very fortunate in that we're finally empty nesters, kinda sorta. They all pop in and out for a visit occasionally. One daughter has flown the coop and is working and living 3000 miles away. The other two are in college, one 250 miles away and the other is 800 miles away. My wife is an indoors type of person who is a voracious book worm, and I work 48 to 60 hours a week...but in 12.5 hour shifts. This leaves me with few household obligations and two to three days per week that I can get in three to five hours for the bikes and still have plenty of quality time for the bride. She has readily afforded me some entire days to dedicate to riding and that has allowed me to ride four centuries this year. I too commute to work, 10 miles 'round trip, but getting off the night shifts at 05:30 a.m. has its advantages. I can easily rack up a good 20 to 30 miles on the rides home before the bride even wakes up. My wife has even gotten accustomed to me being an hour or so late from the day shift which allows for more ride time in the early evening.

I only wish I could retire. Then I could do some serious riding...I've already got some great trips planned.

We all get our turn at "Me Time" sooner or later. Mine didn't come until just last year and it took until this season before I started to cultivate it into my current ride habits. My bride is very patient with my bike habit though I'm sure she's glad that "Good Riding Conditions" only last a few months in these parts!! It probably doesn't hurt that I'm a recovering alcoholic either. I'm sure she'ld rather have a sober bike rider around some of the time than the old beer swilling slob hanging out in front of the T.V. all the time! It was a long time ago but I imagine she still remembers...

My ride today was something I like to call the Saint Kilian Death Loop. Only 30 miles, but a few miles of that are seriously nasty rollers and a bad prevailing wind direction. I know, I know. Garm305 isn't so accurate on grade, but there are plenty of climbs that exceed 10% and steepest registered at 17%. And the wind forecast said 15-25 mph. It was a grind.

On the plus side, the scenery is superb. It's a ride I love to hate.

Saturday 8/29/09... Got started early this morning to check out the deer population. Saw 3 before sunup and 6 more around 9 am. Made up for my poor mileage on Friday, got in 63.29 miles. Also was entertained by 3 sand hill cranes playing with a baby snake, watched them for about 15 minutes. Very funny. This is now my highest mileage month this year.

Rode with NealH on the Canary Coalition's Ride for Clean Air. It's a cool ride that has defined meeting points where riders can jump on and off the ride as it goes over to Asheville. We rode in total 63 miles (about 38 with the Canary Coalition) and 7800' of climbing. Most of that climbing happened in 25 miles starting with a 3400' ascent in the first 10 miles. Awesome weather in the low 60s for the most part, at least until we got back to town where it was in the mid 70s. I have some pictures I'll try to post later today.

wrafl 08-29-09 04:54 PM

0 miles the last two days due to poor weather. Did 41 miles this morning. With 2 more days left for August, just 27 miles short of 600 for the month. Maybe I'll easily cover that distance tomorrow or Monday.

JanMM 08-29-09 05:02 PM

Today: 33 miles (the Medium route) of a club ride that included some Southern Indiana hills. The most challenging one shows in the neighborhood of 16% on Google Earth.

Hmm... I'm riding 10 miles one way to school, and putting in 120 miles/week (go in on Saturdays to help tutor other students). Most of the folks who post here ride far more seriously than I, and much farther distances than I want to go.

Rode usual commute to-from today. Nice bit of cloud cover coming home in the afternoon, made the ride rather nice.

I rode the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred today. This year's ride didn't go too swimmingly for me. Ride report here.
