Managed a second day in a row with 55 miles.

My legs are feeling it today since I haven't done these distances in a couple of months. I've done some occasional 42 milers, but mostly I've done 25 and 33 milers for the last couple of months.

I rode down for the inauguration. Surprisingly pleasant riding, in the low 40s. Got a bit chilled during the ceremonies, but warmed right back up. It was fun riding right down the middle of the pavement on Memorial Bridge on the way across the river.

It was simply terrible today. -4degF and 10-15 mph wind made the wind chill more than -20degF, and riding at 12-15mph it was so cold my eyes froze after about 5 mins. It actually scared me as I have never experienced that even in my snowmobiling days of yesteryear when I rode in worse conditions. I would have needed full goggles or a full face helmet with shield as my safety glassed were not adequate and I decided to abort and go home to start the car. Will not attempt this again until next week when the temperatures are expected to rebound some.

That droy45 is the reason my wife and I moved from the Bangor area to Florida. Well that an LaPage.... While the conditions outside today were less than great we were still able to get in a 14 mile run.

Yeah, I hear you. I usually commute 11 miles into Bangor from the Hampden Winterport town line but today I couldn't do it. Better days are coming. Next August I will tease you about moving away where it's too hot to ride. LOL. Enjoy my friend.

Ah, but I return to NE for the summer months... I know the road well as I used to live in Orrington and work for SAD #22 (please don't hold that against me).

Old Sarge 01-22-13 04:14 PM

Did 9.3 miles today on a beautiful day (mid-fifties). Sure admire y'all who do 20 to 60 miles a day. Too tough for this old man.....but so was 9 miles four weeks ago. :)

That's great! maybe I'll see you on the road next summer. In your opinion, is it harder to ride in Florida in mid summer heat or New England in mid winter cold?

bjjoondo 01-22-13 04:38 PM

24 miles thru the southern half of the Garden of the Gods, here in Co. Springs, CO. Sunny, 60F, WINDY, headwind was really beating this Clyde Whimp up!! LOL, I didn't need a meter to KNOW my heart rate was up! ;) (For photo's: Post #2134 in Hybrids Topic Area) :)

Four hours of hard pedaling in the snow and on ice with my new ice and snow bike. Lots of first gear in the snow and up to 6th gear on the ice. Wider tires better fork and a little less weigh than the old ice bike. A huge success. About 22F at the start and about 15F at the end. Having decades of practice getting the clothing just right for the temperature makes for a very comfortable ride in the cold.

Now I feel like a wuss not going out for a couple of hours in 19ºF, no snow, but at 0430, in the dark. I only did 75 minutes on a trainer.

Bob Ross 01-23-13 06:59 AM

Yes, but purely for bragging rights: When I left the house this morning it was 11°F with a 14mph wind from the north-west, yielding a wind chill/"Real Feel" of -2°F.
I did a 6.5 mile ride, just to say I did it.

Since I am NOT Pcad, I will not say HTFU, ever. :)

You would have all the right stuff too, if you started riding motorcycles in the snow about 1970.

Not today nor yesterday -really cold temperatures here in New Jersey accompanied by high winds. The temperature issue can be surmounted with the right clothing, etc. But combine that with high wind and it is not worth it, to me at least. Maybe tomorrow as Friday there will be snow.

In any case it's a bummer!
Best regards

About 14 miles in 30F temps. Felt pretty good.

Pope Lick was a bit frosty:

A very nice afternoon for a bike ride. 30 miles at the MUP in sunny but breezy mid 70's weather. You guys up north keep that cold stuff up there and don't send any of it our way.

+1

Due to other things getting into the way.... you know life... we were only able to get in 18 miles today. Weather was great and the next 10 days forecast looks great as well.

Old Sarge 01-23-13 04:51 PM

I made my current goal by doing 8.2 miles today. It was about 70f when I left out. My wife accompanied me to Oak Point Nature Preserve and walked some by the lake while I rode the trail. This was such a beautiful day that I wore, for the first time on my bike, shorts and a t-shirt. Worked out well except for the people I blinded with my white legs. :)

bjjoondo 01-23-13 05:00 PM

21 miles, in mostly cloudy, 50F, weather, sure felt chilly for 50F!! Mostly back streets and paved MUP's. Got home wiped down the bike and found a broken spoke on the rear wheel. Didn't hear it pop and these wheels, stayed "95%" true, where the wheels on my other bike, went "wayyyy out of true" when the spoke poped! Will be taking the wheel to the LBS tomorrow for repair, (2,000+ miles on wheel.)

Gravity Aided 01-23-13 05:12 PM

12 miles indoors today, week off for foot problems.

gevad 01-23-13 05:16 PM

Did my regular commute, a 20-mile roundtrip. 15 F on the way in, 24 F on the way home.

Bikey Mikey 01-23-13 05:59 PM

Came home from my Sub assignment, quickly got the gear on and rode to the LBS, 7.5 miles. The LBS switched out the wheelset for me to try(Mavic Ksyrium Elites) and I rode an additional 11 miles.

Not today but a whole 1.1 miles yesterday after work. 13F - into the wind was almost painful on my face even with a balaclava. Much prefer humid 100 degree rides.

Just a method I use when I go out and it's the low 30s and below, I grease my face(cheeks), nose, nostrils, and put chapstick on my lips. All this really helps reduce stinging and definitely eliminates wind burn.
