I've been riding indoors on a Cycle-ops viscous trainer these past few days, about an hour each day. It's better'an nuthin'.

I don't know how far I've gone though. I looked at the computer today and it hadn't budged since last week. It's a wireless unit so there can't be any broken wires. I checked the batteries in each piece and they were fine. The magnet is still there on the front wheel where is it supposed to be. What could be the problem?

Indoor cycling at the gym and outdoors 20 mi. Not as cold today, low 30s. Big snow on the way, as it is for most in the northeast.

We're fortunate to have a great low-traffic place in DC to do loops -- in the middle of the Potomac, in sight of the Washington Monument, beside the Jefferson Memorial, at Hains Point. In the spring it's the site of Washington's famous Cherry Tree Festival.

Loops are loops however, and this is only slightly more pleasant than the trainer:

A woman in the local bike association (WABA) is actually making a virtue of this, and turning it into an event, the Hains Point 100. Feel free to donate:

It's been a while but IIRC wind comes charging up the Potomac and blasts Hanes Point in winter, serving to enhance the pain.

Strava has video workout available to premium users. If you finish a video, it will give you credit for guesstimated mileage, which in my case is probably double what I really did.

32 milesup and back on the Gainesville Hawthorne trail. There was some kind of 5 and 15k marathon going, so this was by far the most crowded I've seen the trail (at least the front portion). I wasn't feeling my best today, finishing in a little under 2 hours, which included one stop. Last week I knocked it off in 1-1/2 hours. Oh well, everyone needs a recovery ride now and then, and I felt all 55 of my years. But it beats a trainer hands down!

The wet trail and sand which washed onto portions made a real mess of my Giant Defy.

Bikey Mikey 12-14-13 02:25 PM

Only 30 minutes on the trainer this AM. I'm hoping to do a 40 mile or more ride tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Black wallnut 12-14-13 07:09 PM

18.3 miles on the Iron Horse Trail.

qcpmsame 12-15-13 06:23 AM

Rode 15.15 yesterday afternoon, 1h 01m 29s. Satisfactory ride.

Sitting here waiting to see what Mother Nature is going to do today. Sunday group ride was cancelled due to rain and that was a shame because it was already 70º outside at 7:00 AM. Forecast is iffy for rain throughout the day so I'll wait and see.

Well, the sun came out around 11:00 so I called my riding buddy and we got in a nice 44 mile ride this afternoon. Sun disappeared after a while and it looked as if we were going to get rained on but it never rained. Overcast dropped the temp a few degrees and made the ride that much nicer.

jppe 12-15-13 04:29 PM

62 miles today. So, with the 110 miles on Friday 170+ for the last 2 rides. I was able to pick my average speed up a little today, it's always a matter of just battling the wind this time of the year. Fortunate to be in an area (Piedmont Carolinas) where you can ride year round if you just dress for it.

First time out on the bike after rotator cuff surgery just under 2 months ago. Wanted to see how it would feel. Did about 3 miles on the hybrid, felt great! No issues with the shoulder. Now hopefully doc clears me for riding when I see him Thursday. Still have a long way to go recovery wise though.

Gravity Aided 12-15-13 05:37 PM

8 miles indoors, 7 inches of snow outdoors. Shoveling builds upper body strength.

New definition (for me) of fair weather riding .. anything after October 31st, above freezing temperature, sunny, and no snow on the road. All of 13 miles today ... first ride in two weeks. I did have pie today :), blueberry. That and the cycling reminds me of summer.

Ride on the roads did not happen yesterday, but I did do 60 minutes on the trainer.

25 minutes on the trainer. Not much but I'll take it.

Another 15 mile day, not really in to things today, Monica's best friend called us this afternoon, her husband died from the Widow Maker, in front of her this morning. Dead before he hit the ground according to the hospital. Please spare me the details on how long or anything else technical or otherwise. This one hits too close to home, we are pretty shook up now.

Bill

jimmuller 12-16-13 05:59 PM

Bill, sorry to hear of your friend's and your loss.

Thoughts and prayers.

John_V 12-16-13 09:06 PM

35 very chilly rides this morning.

zx9rmal 12-17-13 12:35 PM

Beautiful 60's morning. Nice 20 miler.

qcpmsame 12-17-13 06:44 PM

The usual 15 mile ride this afternoon, nice day weather wise.

Made the journey to spend Christmas w my wife's parents in Los Angeles, to be precise Glendora. 3 weeks of mild temps, sun and some of the best road riding anywhere on long winding quiet mountain pavement.

Today's ride was the Azusa Canyon, Little GMR to GMR loop, 38 miles, 3700'.
