Just remember that riding with clipless pedals is like driving a car with a standard transmission. You always disengage the clutch before coming to a complete stop. It will become a second nature task when riding, just as using the clutch is while driving. Enjoy them.

38 miles on a club ride this morning. Almost entirely flat with one very steep but short hill near the end.
It's the end of May but because of weather and whatever my fitness level is feeling about mid-April. Moving forward, though.
Looking back at last year's mileage, I'm about 500 miles short of where I was in 2012. Lacking base miles.

Another hot, humid and windy day for a decent 37 mile ride.

Just when I thought I was having a good ride, I met a couple of guys who would easily be welcome in the 50+ forum, riding a 400km (250mile) ride. Yes in one day. Crazy! They were riding with the BC Randonneurs club. it makes my 40 mile ride, even with 3000 ft of climbing, seem like a walk in the park. Wait a minute, they rode the same hills that I did, and were only half way thru their ride. I feel ashamed.

Very blustery, temp in the high 50's. Flatted about 10 miles into the ride, gashed the tire and tube. Luckily I was not too far from West Chester Bike, so it only cost me an hour and 65 bucks. By now running late, put on another 15 miles.

Did an organized ride 30 miles from the house. So, rode 30 miles to the start did the metric century and then rode 25 more miles to my inlaws. I was still very much feeling the Mt Mitchell ride from Monday.

33 miles this AM including a tombay, lol.

Did 24 rural miles Friday and had a very nice ride. Temperature about right and the wind only slightly over the top.

Joined the "Early risers" group from the LBS this morning and put in another 26 with the crowd.

Stopped off on the long drive to MoM to do a 30-miler near Buena Vista, VA. This is actually the route of the first day of Bike Virginia this year. Now that I have this out of the way, I'll probably spend the first day of BV riding the Blue Ridge Parkway instead :)

Ride to Bury to the East Lancashire Steam Preservation Site where they were holding a 40th War Anniversary Do with people dressed up in 40s gear ( I didnt :).

Along trails and canal towpaths, tho one trail has been tarmaced over so it isnt muddy anymore but there were some good descents and rocky climbs on it as well.

One guy on the ride had been hit by a car a few days before and had ended up over the bonnet and on the roof but emerged with barely a scratch, just raised blood pressure and oxygen levels as he was told when he went to hospital for a check up.

On the ride another rider collided with him and cut his leg with a pedal causing it to bleed quite badly and it had to be bandaged up to stop the bleeding.

So unhurt by a car and injured by a pedal, such is cycling lol.

We spent an hour or so at the Station over a drink ( soda for me ) and then cycled back along a canal towpath admiring this year's crop of cygnets and goslings, very pretty I must say :)

I thought I knew my way home as it was the first time I cycled the route but ended up going way out of my way and adding another 5 miles am sure to my ride.

30-35 miles.

Sunny and pretty hot 15C.

Met my riding buddy this morning and embarked on a nice conversation paced 52 mile ride. It was hot with high humidity at the start of the ride, but the wind was just enough to keep you cool without wearing you out. We actually did a few nice sprints to liven things up a little.

Did the Two Trails Ride today 22 miles 16C and fairly hot.

Started down the River Mersey then onto the Trans Penine Trail leading to the Fallowfield Loop and on to the Cycle Centre for coffee before heading back down it back home.

Mix of tarmac and trails with some small hills but easy ones, not a strenuous ride but it had been advertised as going at the "pace of the slowest rider".

Not sure if the ride leaders fully understand that tho as it seemed to me that meant as long as it was their pace lol.

Approx 15 mph most of the way round.

Bikey Mikey 05-26-13 02:45 PM

33 miles this AM. I took one NORCO(codeine+325mg Tylenol)+ one extra strength Tylenol). Still had pain from the ribs, but without the codeine, it would've been more painful.

It's been rainy in North Texas. I got out and did about 10 miles and then worked on hills. It was really windy.......and absolutely wonderful.

Short, but pleasant 25 mi ride on the I&M Canal trail. Slight drizzle and cool for this time of year. Got a flat - on my car on the way there :-(

With the temp in the high 50's the wife and I did a short 22mi round trip for lunch. About 5mi. into the ride I remembered I forgot my spare tube and co2.
No big deal I have friend that live along the way and a cell phone. So we get home and about 15min. after we get home I go to put the bikes away I have a flat.

Mort Canard 05-26-13 08:22 PM

Since it's Memorial day weekend there is racing on TV. I started out watching the Monaco Gran Prix and then the Indy 500. After that I decided that I should get on the bicycle before parking my kiester for the 600 in Charlotte. I rampaged 17 miles up and down the bike paths late this afternoon. 80° S Wind 20 gusts 28 mph and partly cloudy.

rdtompki 05-26-13 08:32 PM

Son and I did a 40 mile, 1900 ft. of climbing ride. He loafed of course, while I worked pretty hard to average 15.6 mph: typical for me, very slow for him. We had a great time.

Had a near-perfect day for Mountains of Misery:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/318549181

It was about 49 degrees at the start, and never got really hot. I wore the arm warmers until the last ten miles. There was a bit of wind but nothing soul-sapping.

I've done this ride faster, but haven't finished it stronger. I never really felt like I couldn't make it to the top. It was painful, but the riding I've been doing the last couple of months really paid off.

The only mishap was on the ride down on the shuttle bus. I got light-headed, shaky, and sweaty and was seeing spots. I recognized that it was low blood sugar. I nearly passed out. Fortunately I was able to bum a GU from the guy next to me, and it fixed me up within about 5 minutes. It's amazing what a delicate balance our internal chemical processes are in. It's easy to see why something like diabetes can really wreak havoc on you when those regulating systems get out of whack.

Very solid ride Jim! I'll have to get back over and do this one again. I greatly appreciate your average speed for the last couple segments. I still think MOM has one of the toughest finishes of all the rides I've done.

jppe 05-27-13 05:34 AM

About 12-13 miles..........rode over to Charlotte Motor Speedway and back for the 600. Watched some of the race and got tired of people just riding around in circles and no passing or wrecking.

John_V 05-27-13 11:36 AM

Started off with intentions of riding my regular 33 miles today but a very crowded MUP on Memorial Day changed my mind. Ended up doing one 16.68 mile lap then went to my daughter's house for lunch.
