Just got back from a nice 17.35 mile ride out to the western suburbs of Richmond, VA. It felt great to finally get the old C&V '85 Fuji out for a spin after I cleaned her up a little and topped off the air, front & rear in the 27" tires. Total: 17.35 miles in 1 hr, 5 min, for an avg speed of 16 mph. Not too bad, in spite of a few wind gusts!

Here's a view of the rebuilt fence line by the old cow pasture at River Rd & Patterson Ave.

I certainly hope that this morning's ride to work was the last time I wear my ski gloves this year! Mid-30's AM and upper 50's PM (with sun). Not bad, all told. 20 miles.

After six days of rain, we finally got a break today and had a nice and sunny morning. Got in 45 miles to try and catch up for all the rain days. With one riding day left this month, it doesn't look as if I'm going to make that 1K mile month. :( Let's see what happens next month.

Riding Tampa's Flatwoods Park 7 mile(x4) bike loop for the first time later today. looks to be hot(80) and windy(15mph+).

Still wearing the softcast for another 4 days but did manage a fast mile through the neighborhoods with the Cinnamon Girl...

19 miles today in my recurring role as Bike Commuter. Hurried home to avoid rain storms. Beat the rain by about 2 hours - does that mean I'm really fast...........???

canklecat 03-30-16 11:56 PM

Only about 5 miles Wednesday. Got a late start and a t-storm was approaching. Trying out a lower handlebar position, still not sure about it. Will try a longer ride with the lowered bars tomorrow.

Commutededed again, finally after a let up of Easter's commitments and yucky weather. Rode the Grandis, a bottle rocket of a bike that demands the rider's attention. Great fun but tough slogging home into a headwind. Today I'll ride the more sedate Bianchi through even tougher winds. Rain coming in tomorrow with winds increasing to reach a peak on Sunday of possible 64mph gusts, if Ancuweather is to be believed. I may take the fendered Raleigh tomorrow, and after that, who knows? They are predicting snow for Monday.

Polar vortex? What polar vortex?

Unfortunately, my fellow Metro Bostonian, the Weather Channel also agrees with that bleak forecast. Nonetheless, today was my fourth daily consecutive 14 mile commute, an achievement not attained in a few years. As I recently wrote to the Metro Boston thread,

Having a mileage-based training schedule however, effectively motivates me to make time to ride

I have the opportunity to commute a minimal 14 miles one-way during the week (Commuter Rail home), and round-trip on Saturday all year-round, for about 100 miles a week. During the nice weather, I’d like to put in about 150-200 miles to train and do long rides.

In reality though, I probably get in about 20-30 miles per week during the winter, and maybe about 75-100 during the nice weather (to include early evening rides).

Just this week, I was presented with a golden motivation to achieve my optimal mileage. The organization I work for is promoting an "Activity Challenge," for teams of five members to track their physical activity: type, intensity and duration, from March 6 to June 6, and points are assigned. Two of my co-workers are on an opposing team. Results will be posted weekly [...TRASH TALK... :p].

That may be just what I need to “win this one for the Gipper.” :thumb:

For my amusement I’m thinking about posting my weekly results on this [Metro Boston] thread.I figure public pride (or humiliation) here is an additional motivator (even if nobody else reads them).

So we’re now into Week 3 and here are my results week by week…This week, I plan to start my 10-Week Century Training Schedule….

Since Saturday (and much less likely Sunday) it is my long-ride day, I may postpone starting the Schedule until next week.

BTW, today's entry for "cycling outside" with the stiff headwind was 35 minutes moderate, and 45 minutes vigorous.

John_V 03-31-16 10:44 AM

Nice 37 mile ride with my riding buddy this morning. Would have liked to do more but we had to get the dog at the groomers. Nothing scheduled for tomorrow so I think I'll shoot for a 50+ mile ride.

Excellent place to ride. Pretty much all my rides are done there. I'm not much for going around the loop for the entire ride so I add the subdivision next to the park for an 8 mile replacement for one loop around the park. Maybe sometime you can ride it with me.

OldTryGuy 03-31-16 12:40 PM

41 miles today just cruising along to keep the legs in motion. Weather forecast for Sunday's Cross Florida 167 miler is starting to look a little bit better. The group of guys for Six Gap and Horrible Hundred is growing so we should have a nice showing at those rides later this year.

A little bit late with the :thumb: :thumb: for a great ride.
Salonpas are better n' sports creme. I use 'em every day, shoulder and knee, they're great. Combined with the Vicodin they work well :)

Heaviest snow of the year Monday. Big wind Tuesday, gloomy and cold Wednesday, 17.7 miles 1:36 today on the trike :recum: Takes me about 45 mins of pre-ride prep for the trike. New Marathon Plus tires, expensive but they're the best.

In 1965, a Senate subcommittee predicted that by 2000, Americans would only be working 20 hours a week with seven weeks vacation. We actually elect and pay these guys?

Thanks all for the :thumb:. It was a first for me. Yesterday and today were low mileage and high windage *ugh* esp. today. 13.7 and 11.7 resp. When I ride with my wife, it is a low mileage ride, so I try and do my own intervals, sort of. I figure it can't hurt.

jimmuller 03-31-16 05:29 PM

Whooeee! Well, that was fun. 40mph gusts on the ride home from work. My sweetie told me to take it slow. I rode slow because I just wasn't able to go fast into the wind.

Did 19 miles Thursday to see if I can get comfortable with the flopped and reversed handlebar. Got the notion after reading some of Velouria's blogs on older bikes with flopped North Roads bars and mustache bars. Seemed workable on my bike so I gave it a try.

Even with the grips an inch or so above saddle height it felt like I was hunched over like Miguel Indurain in a time trial. After six miles I pulled over to record some video just to check my posture, and was surprised to see I'm still fairly upright -- it just feels worse than it looks, like barbed wire in my neck (a permanently damaged C2 will always be a limitation). I doubt I'll ever be comfortable with drop bars again, but this lowered position felt better uphill and into the wind. The quill stem can still be lowered another couple of inches if I'm so inclined, but I'll ride it this way for awhile first.

Hoping to start the month with a good 50 mile ride but it turned into a 22 mile ride when I started having chain issues around mile 13. Too bad because it's a beautiful morning and here today.

The cast is off and the butt is on. Sunny, breezy 42F, grabbed the 760 and really enjoyed being on the road again even if the miles were short. It's a start.

Beautiful day, 49° to start, sunny, very light breeze, 21.0 1:39 miles on the Roubaix. The acupuncture is working on the back and shoulder. Life is better today.

Too nice of a day in the Antelope Valley to not get out for a bit. Since my fitness is lacking, just rode an easy 50K through the desert and along the aqueduct.

Rode about 6 miles Friday, mostly on a hilly route into the wind to get better accustomed to the lowered handlebar position. Still feeling some extra strain on the hands and neck, but feels stronger climbing hills. This is a route where a guy walking home from work passed me going uphill 7 months ago. So, a little progress. :thumb:

Another nice dress-in-layers day (I don't really wear a "dress"). 23.8 @1:50 miles on the Roubaix.

I rode today! I laugh at the 40 mph wind gusts... from the shelter of the tree-lined MUP. ;) Even counting the open space of the SIU-E campus, where I rode into the headwind in the lowest gear, all tucked in, at a speed slower than walking, the ride really wasn't all that bad.
