I'm actually planning to ride tomorrow out toward Aledo and maybe farther, while it's raining... as long as there's no lightning and the wind is manageable. I want to test this Shimano Storm Jacket and see if it's really rainproof.

Not the stupidest thing I've done a bike. That record level of poor judgment was my inexplicable decision to draft for a few miles behind a truck in Mexico during a 1970s Tijuana-Ensenada ride. I'd like to blame the beer, but I hadn't had any yet. Oh, to be young, dumb and lucky.

Ha!

I started riding again after almost 20 years when my office moved and was only 7 miles from my house. I commuted a lot. Once I got caught out there with a storm rolling in. I was commuting down Bellaire south of 183 (if you know where that is), and the storm blew in from the west. It was apparently a strong low pressure system because it was sucking all the air into it; i.e., in trying to ride away from it I had to ride into a stiff headwind. I was pretty panicked because it was mighty dark out west, and then the thunder started to roll. I went up the Oakmonster (Oakmont from Bellaire to Bryant Irvin), fighting the wind, fighting the hill, and trying to get home ASAP. Then it happened: POP! I broke a spoke. I kept pushing though because I didn't want to get caught in storm. A couple miles later.... POP! Another spoke! Now my rear wheel had a bad wobble. I made it into my driveway just as the downpour started. That was an amazing ride.

If you wanted to try out your jacket, you could do it right now; it's raining pretty good out there.

Winter is still here. 35° at 9AM and overcast. I don't mind the cold if it's sunny, but it wasn't, until the last few miles of the ride. 15.5 miles on the Allez.
I started riding seriously again (after a 20 year hiatus) near the end of 2012. I get grumpy now if I can't ride for the day (yeah, like I need an excuse to be grumpy). GOMIT - Grumpy Old Man In Training.

Best day for riding in quite a while. Had A great ride today!

Rode to work yestidy and t'day. Left work a bit early when Accuweather's MinuteCast said snow "heavy at times" would be starting in 41 of your earth minutes. It was a wintry ride home but snowless.

That's what I did Tuesday afternoon - just walked to do some errands. Rain was just a steady drizzle and the chilly temp didn't bother me, but the weather reports claimed steady 15-20 mph wind and gusts up to 37 mph. I was skeptical and took a walk. Sure enough, those gusts were strong enough to keep me off the bike today, and would have run quartering across my usual ride path.

The Shimano Storm Jacket was comfortable enough in a feels-like 32F with drizzle, but that's not much of challenge. Just a long sleeve t-shirt weight jersey under the jacket. Great windbreaker, at least. Still planning to try it in some hard rain this spring.

Pretty nice out for a night ride in February. Have 38deg and snow is still melting. Snowrider does #24 .

It's been a long time, but I finally was able to hang with the guys this morning. 41 miles, sometimes pulling and most times drafting. With the long way home I managed to get in 71 miles today.

I found time for short, quick, cold ride today. Third such ride in the past four days.

Rode with a fellow BF'er today. About 20 miles and a mini-lunch/beer break.

Yeah, yesterday was humid and a little chilly (it was 60 when I started my evening ride, hadn't dropped too much before I got home), but today was just damp and COLD. Looks like the rain is done but still a stiff breeze out of the north. Maybe tomorrow we'll have better riding weather.

What a night here, managed to work in a ride yesterday, between rain showers, glad that I did because it got grim shortly afterwards. Tornadoes hit us hard, apartment complex with 24 units obliterated, many folks with nowhere to go, and they also lost most of their possessions. Another apartment complex, and some homes, with damage along the path of the tornado. Semi and trailer flipped over on the I-10 Escambia Bay Bridge, along with several cars blown into each other. Fortunately these things kept to the southeast of our home, just some fierce winds, and lots of rain up our way.

Catching up from the last 2 weeks, 146 miles for the week before last, and 153 for last week. Just didn't feel like posting here, so often.

Bill

Oh dear. Good to hear you are okay. Not good to hear about people losing their homes. Even if they are "just apartments" they are still homes.

qcpmsame 02-24-16 07:37 AM

Agreed 100%, Jim, it is sad to read the paper this morning, and look at the destruction here, on-line. I cannot imagine losing everything, whether its an apartment or a home, its where you live and it means just as much. Prayers for all of those that were hit by this storm last night.

I'm glad to hear you are safe, this morning!

Broke out the Cannondale but after last nights ride my legs are whupped. Tackled a strava route only to call off. Saturday I'll try again when legs are recovered.

John_V 02-25-16 01:57 PM

No ride yesterday due to a front that came through dumping quite a bit of rain and bringing some tornadoes with it. Today the gang and I did a very windy 37 miles. At least it wasn't cold.

OldTryGuy 02-25-16 04:43 PM

wind, WIND and MORE WIND is the only way to describe today's riding. 5 miles to the start of the ride, then 27 miles with the group sucking wheels since they were going crazy fast and 38 more miles by myself to finish out with 70 miles.

Kudos to you for riding in the wind. And 70 miles at that. I don't like anything over 6mph (I'm a wind-wimp). And I think the most I've ridden in one day since taking up riding again is 35 miles. 70 miles-wow!

Yesterday I was bone tired (confirmed by my biorthym)- did computer stuff and no ride. Cool but sunny for a 17.8 mile ride on the Roubaix. It was so nice out (mid 60's) after lunch I did another 8 miles for a total of 25.8. The elastic knee bandage from the 99¢ Only Store works great. A good day.

What if everything you see right now is just a hallucination caused by inhaling oxygen because when you stop breathing you black out.

Rode about 12 miles this morning -- very windy but clear and cool. And another 20 minutes this evening, just to test out a video camera mount. Felt great after a 2-day bout with a stomach bug. Might join a local critical mass ride downtown Friday evening if I can knock enough chores out of the way.

Right knee pain this morning but I'm not gonna let a little thing like old age stop me :50:. I strapped on the industrial strength (metal joints) VA knee brace and took the Roubaix out again for 20.9. Bone tired but got in a good ride anyway. Of course the sun didn't come out until the last mile (sigh). I've passed the 10 thousand mile mark.

Another very windy ride. Did 23 miles at a comfortable pace then home to work on my bike.
