68° and sunny at the start of a 21.9 mile ride on the Roubaix. 89° 2.5 hours later. Nice riding temps.
I finally got rid of that ticking by replacing the pedals. The ticking started on the other bike (Allez) too and the only thing they have in common (other than me) is the pedals, installed within a month of each other two years ago. I don't ride with cleats and I like these lite-weight (285g/pair) non-slip pedals.

Started my week as serving as camp chaplain at Camp Beckwith, Weeks Bay, Alabama. Had my staff meeting this morning, and as counselors headed off to get cabins ready I really had nothing to do for a couple of hours. Took off for about 30 miles in the middle of 100 degree heat to ride on a bike trail along the edge of Mobile Bay. Very hot but nice way to mentally get ready for this week with a camp full of middle school kiddos looking at me to be their spiritual leader!

Probably won't be my last ride this week, just as an escape . . .

Good luck with that. It sounds both challenging and rewarding.

We did 37.5 miles on the tandem today. Hot but nice.

Did a group ride(34 members) in the hills of San Antonio,Fl this morning. I felt good but bottomed out on a compact crank/11-25 cassette which has me worried when I do the 3Gap part of the 6Gap later in September! I do have a new 11-28 cassette waiting to be installed.

This is why my wife won't even discuss a tandem, something about if you're not the lead dog . . . .:)

I had to get a haircut a couple of weeks ago after my stoker said that sweat from my hair above the neckline was occasionally flying into her face. As I was overdue for a cut, the hair there was longer and thicker than usual, and the day of our ride was hot and humid.

No complaints about that today on our Screamer ride. 28 local miles. No complaints at all, least none that I can remember.

Later in the afternoon, a solo 7 mile ride after tweaking the recline angle of the seat back on the 'bent I rode yesterday - on that ride I had trouble getting up Fishback Hill on the NW side of Indy. Made it up but just barely. Fishback is a classic short but steep climb. Many CIBA rides include this hill - you don't realize how steep it is until you are nearing the end of the worst of it.

21 miles this evening, a relatively balmy 90F and 60% humidity. Good swampbutt test of my new lightly padded cycling shorts, since I've had some painful chafing the past couple of weeks. So far, so good.

I always expect to be passed by the hardcore guys and gals on road bikes, but this evening I couldn't even keep pace with a gal who was riding a comfort hybrid similar to mine and looked like she was just loafing along, not breaking a sweat or breathing hard. I'm gonna blame my bike, if that's okay.

I am riding 20 miles from morning.

Great Scott!

Ever since I got interested in C&V bikes, my poor old (New!) Scott Sub-10 has languished against the wall in my shop. So yesterday I aired-up his tires, they were getting kind of soft, and we headed for the cafe.

Racing against the setting sun, I had forgotten what a pleasant ride this belt-driven, disc-braked Townie is. It seems the lever travel is a bit longer than it used to be before I feel any "bite" from the discs. Does this typically happen with hydraulic discs when you store them for a while?

http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/...psunci5ilb.png

Anyway, it was nice to get out on my newest ride again. I won't let him sit so long next time...

Greybeard712 06-27-16 02:11 PM

I have yet to own a bike with disc brakes. The trike has front discs, I like them. But disc brakes on a road bike seem more an affection. However, if I had an extra $4500 laying around I'd go for a new Roubaix UDi2 Disc. Costs half of what my Mercedes cost me.

21.7 rather warm miles on the Allez. Predicted high for today: 99°, 100° tomorrow. Time for an earlier (8AM) start.

Saturday morning for 50.4 mi. @ 2:43:17, this morning a 16.3 mi. sprint in 49:19

I discovered a benefit to recently turning 55, most of my regular Strava routes I had top 5's -10's in the 45-54 group, now being in the 55-64 group I am in the 1st to 3rd position...

Fldaves 06-28-16 09:52 AM

Felt frosty this am and did a solo 20 miles on the Suncoast Trail and avg 19.5 mph!

John_V 06-28-16 10:57 AM

Had a nice 51 mile ride this morning with my buddies Frank and Steve. The temp and humidity were not as bad as they have been but it was still a hot and humid ride. Fortunately, Sunday night's rain put out all the hot spots from last week's controlled burn and we were able to breathe again.

JanMM 06-28-16 12:14 PM

22 miles as a bike commuter yesterday. Hot and sunny but not terribly humid.
On the way home. while still in the heart of the city, got overtaken by a young man who asked "How can you feel safe riding that thing? It's so low." I was on my short wheelbase recumbent, which is not particularly low. I pointed out to him that I was just a bit lower than him and then asked him if he was worried about doing an endo? His response was to demonstrate a very brief fixie skid stop -without stopping - and say "I don't have brakes!" So, yeah, Mr. No Brakes is worried about my safety!!

Greybeard712 06-28-16 01:54 PM

Started at 8:45, slightly cool on the bare arms, but I'll take it. 69° to start, 94° at the end. 21.5 miles on the Roubaix. Biorhythm sez high on the chart for physical, body says otherwise. I felt old and tired today.

30 miles between late morning and noon, when the heat index reached 100F. I rode just a little slower. Felt good.

Exactly 10 months ago I resumed cycling after a 30-year I-hate-us. It was a hot day. I made it one mile before collapsing at a bus stop.

Making a little progress.

Wow a 9K Benz? Could you hook me up with your dealer?:p

wished 06-28-16 04:38 PM

24.5 miles in 100+ heat index right after lunch while my campers were doing "rest time". Being the camp chaplain is much better than being a counselor, I do get some time to myself instead of 24/7 with campers. Of course I am also three times the age of counselors so I should have some perks!

OldTryGuy 06-29-16 05:38 AM

Stopped the crank churning at 73 miles yesterday. Some fast miles and some slow miles but ALL hot and humid miles.

Well, it was $8500 ML320 (SUV) and 11 years old (2002 model) @148k miles when I bought it (Jul 2013). But in really good condition. Only 154k miles on it now (I ride a lot, don't drive much).

22.4 miles on the Allez. Temps ranged from 74° to 91°. Some cloud cover in the middle of the ride helped. Humidity about 13%. I'll take the heat over the cold any day.

Off topic, but a used Benz is a great value. Expensive to maintain compared with some cars, but they really last. Many moons ago I delivered European cars all around the U.S. between dealerships for a wholesaler, often driving them directly when we didn't have enough to load on a truck. The older Mercedes held up really well, although the recirculating ball joint steering tended to get a bit loose with wear. They're a really sturdy car, with a ride like a posh truck. They ride great on bad roads, and don't lose balance with a blowout, even on a front tire.

I rode my original 20 mile loop... but road construction caused me to shorten the ride to about 17 miles.

The weather was awesome for my ride today. I waited for the temperature to warm up before heading out. Recently I've had to head out early before it got too hot.

Fldaves 06-29-16 09:16 PM

Did a 30 mile ride on the Suncoast Trail and the Starkey Park trail. Unfortunately A club member was involved in an accident on this evening's ride and had to be taken away by ambulance to a hospital.

DQRider 06-30-16 07:55 AM

Had a nice, long ride beside the river last night. But I took a new route getting there - and it was a bit scary. I was detoured to a strange part of town by closed trails due to construction, and soon found myself riding past housing projects and walls festooned with gang signs: MS13 and Latin Kings, from what I could make out. It was around dinner time, and I could smell delicious Mexican food cooking from several houses, which is probably why there was nobody outside to mess with me. Needless to say, I didn't take any photos around there, but made a beeline down to the waterfront.

Once there, I noticed the Jonathan Paddleford preparing to cast off on its nightly dinner cruise. I quickly rode upstream to set up at a vantage point I had picked out for just such an occasion. Here are three of the shots I took:

http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/...psxuiia4uq.png

http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/...psrlwk26re.png

These were worth the risk I took getting there, but of course, I chose a different route going home.
