27 on my single speed, although a short ride it was still a challenge for me since it was all rolling hills and humid in upper 90's. Probably an even higher level of effort than a couple of weeks ago, though with the shorter distance I don't feel as shot now. The irony is that I started out with the intention of moderate effort Zone 2 riding, and that plan failed on the first hill

Joined an early am group ride in the Fl hill country of Brooksville/SanAntonio - 43 miles with an elevation gain of 1,904'!

27 miles with 3204 feet of climbing. Fun stuff.

for a major change of pace, I opted to do a shop ride today...thought it might be fun to do a route I don't normally take and maybe meet some new people.
set the alarm, made b-fast, rode to the shop, signed in, listened to a 'safety' lecture, and did a group introduction...16 riders, avg age was probably early 50s. did 30 miles with the gang, but finally grew weary after stopping a dozen times to re-group, admire the view, get stuff at a conv store...and then there was the incessant calling out of twigs, pebbles, cars up, cars back. the final straw was the hyper-annoying, retina-searing blinky lights most of the group was using. thought they were going to induce a seizure at one point...so, finally decided to bid them adieu and escaped the Borg and did another 15 miles by myself. had forgotten what riding with random participants was like... planning a nice solo ride for tomorrow. |
Aging and still riding.
Haven't been on here much at all since joining, but curious about the riding regiment you guys use. I looking at 70 not all that far down the rode. I have type 2 diabetes and take medication and inject once a day using Victoza. I've been riding regularly for about 8 yrs now and used to be able to knock out 20 miles in 90 minutes no sweat. But I noticed when I turn 69, recovery took longer and rather than riding 2 off 1, I've had to go to 1 on 1 off and sometimes 2 days off and it's more like 18.5 miles and I'm done. And now its no longer one nap mid day, its 1 after I ride and another one around 2 in the afternoon. Just wondering if that's normal as I haven't lost the desire to ride, but sometimes the miles feel more taxing. Age is such a wonderful thing. Happy riding!

About 50 miles Sunday, between a group ride and the ride to and from. Forgot to restart Cyclemeter after the halfway point where it stopped at 24.something miles. My longest single day ride so far this year.
Got caught on the edge a of t-storm heading home Sunday night but only the head wind gusts up to 25 mph were a challenge -- it was barely sprinkling and the lightning show was miles away. Invigorating, exhausting... I'm gonna take a couple of days off. Maybe. 😏 |

18 miles @ 1:28 today on the Roubaix. Sunny and warm, finished the ride before it got too hot. Still at low energy but I figured if I didn't ride I'd mope about it all day, so I went for a slower ride, I feel good about that. 2016: 2,486 Miles ♂ Total Miles: 12,083 Allez 1036/3468 · Roubaix 1068/3600 · Sirrus 188/2223 · Trike 194/1778 If there are two full moons in a month, the second one is called a blue moon. So the expression "once in a blue moon" means not very often. |

Rode the bike park at Whistler today, and only saw one person who I know for sure is my age. Sadly, I know his age because I had to provide stabilizing first aid until the pros got there....

Just rode a mile and a half to the store to fetch a few things to go with BBQ. And my legs are dead from Sunday's ride. Definitely taking a day or two off.

I had oral surgery last Thursday, but didn't want to give up a holiday weekend of riding. So Saturday I did a "small" with a couple of friends that turned out bigger than expected. 90 miles and 11,000 feet, and on a flippin hot day. But it was a day of infinite views and aqua hues: http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...psexubooik.jpg Sunday, a couple of friends came over and we did maybe 40 miles and 4500 feet ... we took our time, though. Enough was enough, and I had some work to do today, so I spent the day indoors sending out invoices (my most detested task). Ugh. That gave me a bigger headache than the surgery. :crash: |
62 miles saturday, 50 today. also ran 5 today

Total of 26 miles today (7/4). Rode the tandem with favorite stoker in our neighborhood's 4th of July Parade - 3 miles at a verrrrrry slow pace around the 'hood. Stayed back with the walkers and little kids on little bikes, trikes, etc most of the way. So slow we had to stop a few times to keep from running over anyone. Hot dogs, bounce house, snow cones afterwards.
Then later this afternoon out on my long wheelbase 'bent for a 23 mile ride out towards rural areas and back. More of a rural/suburban mix most of the way. Have to get pretty far from Indy to be truly in the country. |
Did an easy spinning day of 20 miles this am.
|
40 miles yesterday at a comfortable pace in prep for this coming sat. "Pedal for Paws" a local charity ride I do every year. Planning on the 65 mile route and must remember to not hook up with anyone who is 1-2 mph faster!
|
52 solo miles this morning with a 104º heat index. Even with the moderate winds, the heat on the last lap just wore me out. Even Amanda wasn't going her usual 20+ mph in today's heat.

Had the day off work, so I rode up to Belgium and back, 19 mile round trip. First ride of more than a mile for me this year, made it with a little neck pain from lack of riding. Next time I want to go to Cedar Grove and back. Good to get the bike out for a ride.

http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/...psvxzrhi0b.jpg Mr. Stupid reared his ugly head this morning. I have a daily ritual where I put the key in the dead bolt, take the bike outside, turn the bottom lock, close the door, lock the dead bolt. Only this morning - NO KEY! Locked myself out of the apartment. I have an extra key - in the car - car keys are locked in the apartment. DUH! Called the real estate agency, rode down there (9 miles one way), and picked up a set of keys. I have to return them, but I'll take the car. Fortunately there is a brand new bike PATH (separate from the busy road) down McCarran all the way from my usual bike path. I ended up near my usual ride mileage. 21.3 on the Allez. 2016: 2,507 Miles ♂ Total Miles: 12,105 Allez 1057/3489 · Roubaix 1068/3600 · Sirrus 188/2223 · Trike 194/1778 Mangoes are the most-consumed fruit in the world. |
My surgeon gave me the OK to ride on 6/14, 3 months to the day after I got a metal ball at the end of a humerus, as long as I ramped up slowly. I've done 14 rides since then and went over 100 miles for the year today, on an 11.4 mile ride. (Those 10ths get more and more important as time goes on....) I'm really happy - I'm on schedule to do over 200 miles this month, on my way to a metric century (and maybe riding my age in miles) by mid-September.
There's a big difference between 50 and 70+. The demographics may soon see us lobbying for a 70+ forum.... I hope it arrives before 2034. :-) |
Thanks and thanks. The MasterLight has spent far too much time hanging on the hook the last few years, to the point that the brifters got sticky. Several flush and lubes over the past few months got them working well again. Now I just need to get my cycling condition built back up a little.

After work today 90º, 100º heat index. 20.4 mi. 1:02:00

Biked to and from work today for a total of 22 miles. Holy Cow was it humid this morning!
|
Wanting to get in another 50 mile ride but lack of sleep and this heat just wouldn't let me do it today. Got in a moderately paced 38 miles at around 15-16 mph since that speed was about as fast as I could go without getting overheated. Forecast for tomorrow is 40% rain and I'm hoping that it brings some overcast skies in the morning.
