22 miles today riding to and from work on a beautiful day in Central Indiana.

OldTryGuy 08-24-16 06:27 AM

Yesterday started off with a 150 mile drive to Clermont, Fl for a 55 mile ride with 2400'+ of climbing. That's what has to be done when living in FLATLAND SW FL where a 55 mile ride will get ya less than 50' of climbing.

2manybikes 08-24-16 09:35 AM

130.6 miles yesterday. About 85f at the start, about 65f at the end. Southeastern rural Mass. Perfect weather for a ride. Strong tailwind going out, and strong headwind on the way back. I stopped caring about headwinds a couple of decades ago.

21 miles this AM on the Tarmac SL with long sleeves. The cool felt good.
I have this '06 Tarmac S-Works listed on Craigslist & ebay but it's so fun to ride I think I'll keep it - next to the other, newer Tarmac S-Works and other three bikes-and trike in a 425 Sq Ft apartment. Maybe 5 bikes is enough - for now (remember, N+1).

Rode today both morning and evening. 16.68 miles tonight on the Giant Avail road bike, and 6.65 miles this morning on my new 5 year old Morab mare "Summer". So total saddle time today was 23.33 miles.

Since others are sharing photos of their riding territory, here are two shots of mine in southwestern Loudoun County, VA.

18 today at easy pace after 3 days off ....fighting some sort of malady.....

canklecat 08-24-16 10:01 PM

18 miles with a perfect ratio of riding to relaxing over a milk stout. Put a taller handlebar on the bike. Now I can sit up like a respectable citizen and grin rather than grimace in pain.

Late posting, on Tuesday, with gorgeous weather, mid 80s and low humidity (finally) went out for 56.7 miles.
Yesterday was a "rest day".

Rode 6 miles in a light drizzle to get out of the house felt great

Today I rode 39 miles on a very gorgeous day in my favorite area which takes me to Buzzards Bay with the Elizabeth Islands in view out in the bay. Also in view way out on the water were numerous sail boats, hull down with just sails visible above the horizon. I love the littoral and the creatures that inhabit that environment including the humans. On the last portion with just about 5 miles to go, I came on a section of road that had been freshly paved and was as smooth as a babies bottom. I found myself soft pedaling at 18 MPH.

First ride in two weeks. Got back from a vacation in the Rockies with no bike to ride. Got out this morning for a nice 38 mile solo ride. Didn't want to push it on the first day back so I did a moderate to slow paced ride. I did manage a two or so mile tag onto a group of regulars that were doing 20 mph but dropped off when they turned and I went straight.

Glad to see you back John_V. Wondered where you were.

21.4 miles on the '06 Tarmac S-Works SL. Decided not to sell this bike after all. Too sweet a ride. Put on a new Ultegra 12-30T cassette so I can climb hills (even tho I'm not best friends with gravity).

Another 6 miles or so late last night, and another 14 later, to make adjustments after swapping handlebars and saddles between the comfort hybrid and new-to-me Univega. And put new brake shoes on the hybrid.

Surprising how much difference a few parts swaps and new shoes can make. The heavy-ish hybrid feels kinda nimble now with the right bars and saddle, while still feeling comfortable. And the nimble but uncomfortable Univega now feels comfortable and still moves smartly.

I didn't realize how bad my original brakes were on the hybrid until I tried the new pads. Wow... no more grip strengthening exercises while carefully anticipated every glide-to-stop. I'll need to retrain my reflexes to avoid over-braking.

Only problem now, after swapping saddles I may run out of seat post on the hybrid, to compensate for the loss of 2"-3" of height from the springy, padded comfort saddle.

Since this month isn't going to have many miles to it, I've decided to get back into the groove gradually. Did a moderate to slow paced, 24 mile ride with my buddy Marcel. I'll start picking up the pace next week.

Ronno6 08-26-16 01:57 PM

A meager 15.2 miles today at a leisurely pace.
This was the first ride with a new friend whom I met a week ago.
Lynn is 5 years my senior, and has been riding for about 5 years.
He has done some serious touring, without ever really being a serious cyclist.
He has done the Southern Tier, Natchez Trace and Katy Trail.
He had not ridden much lately, but should ride a lot more now that we have met.
Hopefully he and I will do some loaded touring together.

20.5 miles on the Tarmac SL3. Love my new lightweight toy (16lbs). But I still have to pay for it (sigh). Pretty chilly at 8AM (58°) so long sleeves, but too warm by the time I stopped for lunch. Actually nice riding weather. The arm warmers I ordered won't be here until next week (or later-slow boat from China).

Did the Friday "Le Tour de Yard Sale" again on the hybrid, without the thorn "welcoming committee" at the park. . . :thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

canklecat 08-27-16 02:37 AM

37 miles Friday night, between the group ride and trip to and from. The slight riser bar on the Univega is just about perfect. Still not sure about the saddle, but it's getting closer to what I want for a cruiser.

John_V 08-27-16 10:30 AM

39 solo miles today. Pushed it a bit more today than I have since coming off vacation but I don't want to push too hard. First lap was very brisk but toned it down to around 17 mph for lap two. Riding on the service roads was slower since there was a ton of people there today.

JanMM 08-27-16 11:18 AM

Friday: 19 miles to and from work but on the way in storm sirens started blaring as I was in downtown Indy with 16 blocks to go. Turns out it was a Tornado Warning but thankfully the actual bad weather, which had popped up unexpectedly, was not headed my way. Don't know if there were any tornado touchdowns, but some damage was done by the wind. That's twice in a week for Indy - which was spared the worse damage Kokomo received from the previous storms.

Greybeard712 08-27-16 12:37 PM

20.1 miles today on the Allez. Two pedestrians and a dog were hogging the sidewalk where I have to ride, where there are never any walkers. Came to an abrupt halt, senior moment, forgot to kick out, fell over and ripped 4" of skin off my left arm and scraped the left knee. They just kept walking. But fortunately I carry a small first aid kit, ¼ paper towel to soak up the blood, antibiotic cream and a large bandage. Continued on with my ride. The two times I've worn cleats on this particular bike I've fallen. But it's still my favorite bike.

Took my recently restored 1989 Eddy Merckx on a 20 mile ride today here in Edwardsville. The Extra Corsa is a true race bike, possibly the best during this time period. The restoration kept the original indexed 2x7 Dura Ace drivetrain. I really owe a great thanks to Duane at Chester Cycles in Chicago and Alec at The Bike Factory in Edwardsville. Without their skills, this would have remained a ride-able but well-used racehorse of a bike. Now it's got a new lease on life and it will stay in like-new condition for many years to come.

Wow - that's a beautiful classic. But with the handlebar angle don't you get a stiff neck?

20 miles today on the Roubaix. The sun was shinning, the air was cool on bare skin, a perfect riding day. Probably not too many of those left this year.

Just got back from a nice 20.5 mile ride out west of Richmond, VA way out to the suburbs and into Capital One's big business complex in West Creek Pkwy. Avg speed of 15.2 mph and did the 20.5 mile loop in 1 hr 20 min. For some reason, I find myself very comfortable, cruising along on the 52t chainring and the 19t rear cog. I wonder what that computes to from an old 85 Fuji with 27" x 1 1/4 gumwall tires. Hmmmm...

52t & 19t = 2.74:1 ratio.
52t & 19t = 74.1 gear inches.
Cadence of (+/-) 70 = 15.4 mph.

It's just smooth, comfortable, and let's me cruise along at a good clip. Could someone verify those calculations?

Anyway, here are some obligatory photos....

Stopping at Tuckahoe Creek along River Road.

Lastly, my wife took a photo of me on my C&V '85 Fuji, coming down the hill before turning into our driveway.

One of the coolest things that I wish I could have stopped to take a picture of... While I was in West Creek Pkwy, I saw an older couple of a matching pair of his & hers recumbent bicycles! They looked so cool! Two wheels in front and a larger wheel in the rear. I think they were these, but I wasn't sure...
