20 miles with three other ladies for our regular Thursday ride. Perfect day, too - cool (high 50s), cloudy, with a bit of a stiff headwind going out but we were protected on the MUPs just about the entire first 10 miles to a Starbucks for our rest stop. The people queued at the Starbucks drive-thru looked at us a bit curiously, as if they were somewhat embarrassed to be sitting in their cars while we sat at an outdoor table under a big umbrella, laughing and talking, all dressed in high-vis jackets (it was still too cold to take them off), our bikes arrayed in a relaxed, parked circle around us. Heading back we got a tad lost thanks to Google Earth claiming a certain road was a thru-road when, in fact, it was a dead end. Only a mile backtrack, however, and we were back on course. The anticipated tailwind home couldn't make up its mind to be a true tailwind, or a cross wind. Either way, it was a definite help from time to time.

A lovely ride, lovely day, with great riding companions. Couldn't spend a nicer morning any other way.

What a nice ride in the heat - for the PNW - 85deg!
Sought out the quiet roads south of Champoeg State Park.
Ended up going further than planned, not a senior moment - I swear.
Ended up about 40mi.
Chipotle burrito past the mid-ride point (no burrito pic)

If I did it would be as a single person. I couldn't get my wife to leave the Tampa area for love or money.

Spent an hour on the recumbent and elliptical at the gym, in anticipation of the 23++ winds expected later this afternoon. Doing a nice 45 mile group ride early tomorrow, although it'll be 18+ winds by ride's end.

Seeing all the beautiful pics from folks up north getting out and about has me wondering...this will end sooner or later, won't it?

Rode about a block, turned around and stripped to the skin and re-dressed in long pants and heavier jersey, full fingered gloves.Spring only lasted a couple of days. Thunderstorms tomorrow, rain-wind, possibly Sunday too (hope not). 22.3 miles (35.9k), overcast skies. After reading about the "heavy" winds you guys are having in Florida I shouldn't complain.

20 miles Friday evening. It was supposed to be a slowpoke recovery ride, under 12 mph. First half was over 14 mph so I slowed way down for the return trip. Drank plenty, slowed myself down when I felt myself pushing instead of spinning easily.

I overdid it Wednesday, forgot I'd taken a diuretic the night before when I noticed my cankles were too cankly, then didn't drink enough during the ride. It was that misleading weather -- cool, overcast -- and I wasn't as thirsty as usual. Didn't realize until I got home from a fairly fast (for me) 32 mile ride that I'd drunk only half of a 24 oz bottle. Not good. Muscle spasms, nausea, tingly lips, etc. -- all the side effects from taking a diuretic and getting dehydrated. First time in 30 years I'd pulled such a dumb stunt.

No. Thunderstorms with lots of rain. RUMMMBLEBOOM.

wthensler 05-06-17 10:29 AM

62 miles, 42 of which were with the Gainesville Cyclng Club. The last 23 were in absolutely BRUTAL 20mph headwinds. There was no letup, and nowhere to hide. I rode most of it in the drops, and ended up dropping most of the group as I had an additional 10 miles of suffering. Gold stars effort, but now I'm simply beat.....

Greybeard712 05-06-17 11:41 AM

16.2 miles(25.1k), overcast and medium wind but I beat the rain. Gusts to 40mph today but I made it home before then, ergo the shorter ride. A section of the bike path is still flooded (since Feb) and probably will be through most of the summer. It cuts about 3 miles off the ride so I double up on sections. Rain this afternoon, maybe tomorrow, definitely wind.

Got 81 miles in today. Nice and overcast and 60 degrees out. Only thing was the wind was terrible.

I don't usually think my rides worth posting about, but went on a club ride for 33 miles today, mostly rural roads. It had been raining heavily here since Wednesday, today was cool and windy, but dry. Some of the fields in Madison county are still under water. It was great to have a moderately long, fast ride, after all the cold damp spring here.

As dunelt says, too much rain in Indy the last week or so. ^^^
14 solo miles from home today - sunny and warmish.
Planning on a tandem club ride Sunday.

While here in the Portland area got a chance to ride with another Forum member. Out on vintage bikes for a rapid 35+ miles.

Here's mine with the new tubulars; Veloflex 25s ride mighty nice.

38 mile recovery ride on the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail. Gorgeous weather, glad I went early as it started to get busy on the return.

Greybeard712 05-07-17 12:44 PM

It rained last night so the streets were wet. The wind was slapping the trees around pretty good at 8:30 this morning but I was already dressed (for winter) so I pumped up the tires on the Allez (haven't ridden it but once in the past two months) and rode 23.6 miles (38.1k). After the first 3/4 mile the wind wasn't so bad, except on the way home. I keep forgetting how fun this heavier (aluminum) bike is. Well, it's only slightly over a pound heavier (21.2lbs) than the lil' Tarmac. Overcast and ugly but a fun ride.

However, the sun came out and the wind was < 8mph so I took the newer Tarmac out for an additional 12.7 miles (20.4k), a total of 36.3 miles (58.5k). It's almost 3 in the afternoon, time for breakfast!

Yesterday was day one of the MS-150, The Citrus Tour. Was planning on a century ride with two other teammates but at 6:00 AM, the wind charts were showing winds of 17-19 mph with gusts of 25-28 mph. Two of us decided we didn't want to do 100 miles in that kind of wind. As it was the 50 mile ride was brutal with the non-stop wind gusts.

Today was a much better day with winds and gusts between 7 and 15 mph. Since it was a much nicer yesterday, we did the 75 mile return trip which ended up being 78 miles. The winds didn't bother me until the 10-12 miles from the finish line, when we hit some hilly country. The wind and the hills really took it out of me. At the last 8 miles, I told the other two (in their late 30s) to go on ahead and I would finish solo. They only beat me by about 4 minutes so it wasn't that bad of a solo ride.

Dry and sunny today - 30 Screamer miles on a HOOTs (Hoosiers Out on Tandems) ride.

48 miles out and back on the MUP to Big Creek State Park. Beautiful day, sun, 70s, and low humidity. Slight tail wind on the way out convinced me I was in shape; headwind on the way back reminded me that I'm not.

Blues Rider 05-08-17 11:28 AM

One weekend ride--24 miles Saturday afternoon. BEAUTIFUL day, if a tad windy. Averaged 14.8 mph, which for me is a LOT faster than previous rides.

This morning:
Weight training
Stationary bike: 18 min., 6.3 miles

Hell no, I rode 114 miles with 7,800' of climbing -- in the rain -- yesterday, you couldn't pay me to get back on my bike today!

Good heavens! I guess you'd be a shoe-in for next Monday's "Assault on Mt. Mitchell" :thumb:. Fewer miles, but >11,000 ft vertical, most of it at the end. They don't call it "Beast of the East" for nothing.

I rode the TD 5 Boro ride in NYC yesterday, on a Fat Bike! 44 miles but very flat and easy 11 mph pace. My low HR tells the real story, the ride was about having a good time, not race.

Skipped the Kiwanis Bikes Coffee Riders today for a solo 21.9 mile (39.2k) ride. Experienced my first flat on the Tarmac (Continental tires). Whoever invented the 16 gram CO2 bottles, I could kiss 'em.

I dunno, I'm generally not a fan of "epic" rides... Yesterday was more of an obligation (and what's funnier still, I'm obligated to ride that exact same route in two weeks!) than something I honestly enjoy. I like to do one or two centuries a year, and maybe one bona-fide insane ride -- e.g., the Markleeville Death Ride, or some subset of Vermont's Six Gaps, etc. -- but I'd be perfectly happy if I never rode more than 80 miles and/or never more than ~5,000 at a stretch.

And I'd definitely be thrilled if I never again rode in a torrential downpour!
