Warm and muggy on this morning's ride to work. Hot on the ride home. 20 miles today.

John_V 06-13-17 11:48 AM

Forecast called for rain late in the morning so I went out for a ride before the rain came. Humidity was 97% but at least the sun wasn't out. Got in a good 50 miles with two of my buddies. Had a GPS glitch on the ride this morning because Strava is only showing 35.5 miles while Endomondo and MapMyRide are showing the correct mileage. Good thing I really don't put a lot of emphasis into Strava.

I rode 25 mi in 91F yesterday.

I thought I would only make a mile because I was sick with a cold, sneezing, running nose and coughing really bad. But once I got riding, all my symptoms went away. I really felt good until I finished and then all of the symptoms came back. Weird.

28.8 miles (46.3k). Wore the new pair of Hincapie bib tights I picked up on eBay auction for $12 ($160 on mfr web site) and a jacket. Yeah, it's still cold at 8:30, rain and wind Sun and Mon, no ride. Back to shorts Thur. Had an 11AM appt so I cut the ride short at 18.1 miles. Went out for a second ride (10.7 miles in shorts) it was so nice, the usual afternoon wind but do-able.

Very warm/muggy riding to work this morning but a very nice ride. Stormed while at work and then cleared for my ride home. Still steamy but ice water in the Polar bottle helped. 22 miles.

Had a wonderful 3.5 hours of sleep last night and got out at 4:05AM this morning on the Paramount for a "nice and easy" 31 miles. Temperature was 77F and humidity was such that I didn't need a water bottle. Only had to open my mouth for a drink.

Made it back and decided to take out the Giant that I haven't been on for weeks. Met the Tuesday AM group and was thankfully able to hang with them. That ride was 37 miles and added another 36 on my own for 73 total miles.

67 miles on my own, my age next month plus the 37 group miles made for a good century plus.

34 miles at midday on the new-to-me Centurion Ironman. Intended to start earlier when it was cooler but family stuff came first. Enjoyed the first 15 miles, should have made it a shorter ride. Too warm and my neck and shoulders still aren't adapted to the road bike. But I just took it easy and loafed home, taking stretch breaks every 5 miles or so.

Greybeard712 06-14-17 12:39 PM

18.1 miles (29.1k). Had to cut it a little short (prefer at least 20 miles) because dental office called, have to go back in for 3rd impressions, so I missed my usual lunch at SenCen. Worth it tho since I'll be wearing these partial plates (metal based) for the next 20 years.

Yesterday was cold but I dressed for it. Today warmer but more than I expected, I overdressed in lined pants and lined jersey. Still I'd rather be a little too warm than cold (so why, pray tell, do I live in the northern latitudes?)

40 very hot and humid miles. Add to that a moderate fog and I felt as if I needed gills in order to breathe.

John00 06-14-17 08:45 PM

Got about a mile from the house and ran over some glass, got a 1/2" cut in my tire, made a loud pop and went down immediately. Was an half worn old front tire I had put on the back wheel recently. Put a new tube in it and rode home and put on a brand new tire. Was overcast this morning, but the sun came out and it was a pleasant 66° ride. 46 miles bringing me to 2049 miles for the year. Not too bad for an old man turning 68 in a few months. Ran into this sign, I see them almost once a week, blocking the bike lane when there is plenty of space on the shoulder.

20 miles late morning Thursday, after taking Wednesday off to rest and stretch. Still not seeing any significant speed advantage to the road bike over my hybrid. But I'm still making minor fit adjustments to make it a bit less uncomfortable.

And I can see now why there's a trend toward wider tires for road bikes. The 700x23 tires on this Centurion Ironman are wider than the original 700x18, yet are still transmitting every jolt in the and aren't noticeably faster than the 700x42 tires on my hybrid. There's a small advantage in wind resistance into headwinds. But the lighter weight on hill climbs is negated by a poor gearing combo, with 42/24 being the nearest to a hill gear -- still way too high for spinning, at least for me.

John_V 06-15-17 12:28 PM

Not as hot as yesterday but still extremely humid. Weatherman said that the morning showers should now be shifting to the evening because of some trough over the central states. Awesome! Got in a moderate paced 25 miles with my buddy Steve while he's learning to ride on aerobars and then did a very nice 15 mile solo ride.

I rode to a favorite watering hole to meet a friend for dinner and brews last night.

The weather has finally warmed up along the beach, with all of the scenic benefits (:innocent:) you can image inherent to that.

Dinner was at the Shack ... an old school beach dive gastropub of the first order.

20.7 miles (33.3k) in shorts and arm warmers to start. Good cycling day.

If you have a sphygmomanometer on your arm, don't freak out. It's used for checking your blood pressure.

A good day today cause I was feeling good and got 104.98 miles in.

wthensler 06-16-17 05:39 AM

Just 20 miles when I got a flat and simultaneously clobbered by a huge afternoon thunderstorm. Came out of nowhere, and it stayed. Changed the flat in record time and hightailed it to Williston. Thank God my wife was able to
pick me up.

Whoa ... the double whammy. I hate changing tires in the rain.

I got a flat on the way into the office myself. A rather large shard of glass.

On the upside, at least 20 people slowed to ask if I had everything I needed. Seriously ... about 80% of the riders asked. How cool is that?

Finally got out (the wind has been constant around here) and took the Gary Fisher out for a shakedown run to the library and back, with a little "off roading" thrown in. . . . .

Yesterday - drove to work but got out for a nice 16 mile ride before cooking dinner. My stoker mowed the grass and I got to cook!
Rode to work this morning and hope to be able to make it home by bike in a couple of hours.

That makes no sense - any explanation from local government?

23.5 miles (37.8k), perfect riding day. The arm warmers came of after the first ½ hr. Going to climb Mogul Hill (Serious "up" on the ride to Verdi) with the Kiwanis Bikes group tomorrow on the Lil' Tarmac. 39/53 chain rings but I put a 12-30 cassette on it. Should be fun.

A very sunny, hot and humid morning. There was a forecast for rain starting at around 11:00 AM so I went out for a ride. Got in a nice 40 mile solo ride and while I don't normally ride in the rain, I was kind of hoping the rain would come early and cool things down some. No such luck! The rain came about 10 minutes after I got home.

Made it home by bike on the same day! Younger fellow followed me in the bike lanes for several miles before I turned off. He never passed me so I lost no cat 6 points. I think he coulda passed me if he wanted to.

45 miles meandering around South Tahoe. About half of it on sandy single track. Summer as hit but the snow is sticking around.

canklecat 06-17-17 10:45 AM

27 miles Saturday morning, hoping to beat the heat. Didn't work. Temp was only high 70s at first but quickly heated up and humidity was over 80%, 20mph headwinds half the way. Gut cramps forced me to stop for about 15 minutes halfway through. Sure thought I'd been drinking enough but I reckon not.

Still not convinced the Centurion Ironman is the right road bike for me, but I'm gonna give it awhile.
