100% FULL MOON illumination tonight so get out and ride!!! https://www.calendar-12.com/moon_calendar/2019/may

Got out at 12:08AM Saturday after 1 hour of sleep with the MOON at 98% illumination and it was phenomenal. Turned all solid lights off leaving only blinkies on in a remote section with no houses and it was eerie yet calming. Goal was 100 miles in 6 hours but due to 2 comfort breaks timing wasn't looking good with 15 miles to ride. Some fast thinking with the solution being a criterium type of ride in the streets by my house. Managed to complete with seconds to spare then wound down or another mile. Back home and take a long HOT shower, take care of the munchies, chill out a bit then off biking to drug store and then food shopping. Got an additional 24 miles so hit my secondary goal of 125 miles.

51 mile solo

51 miles with 3,000+ft of climbing. Unfortunately, the Rest stop at the halfway point was closed
Probably not the best place to "hydrate" on a ride anyway.

Friday evening, a speed run to the greenway. Having done longer rides the previous week then allowing time to recover, I felt pretty great. Could have been a PR contender on that run except I caught both lights, and at the first light a police cruiser came screaming through with me off to the side during the green, and the light lost track of me and never gave me another green arrow, so no PR that day.

Saturday evening a long one (long for me, not for anyone else here). I wanted to see if I could get to the uni downtown from way up north where I live. I made it in good time, taking the direct route, but got lost on the way back in a giant office park after dark with curvy roads all over and ended up with 3h21m in the saddle. Two days recovery following.

I know this feeling and love it. That moment of solitude and serenity. You can hear the world; you can feel your feelings; you can hear yourself think. It's a big part of why I'm fit now, again, after 20 years of working in front a computer and doing not much else. The memory of this feeling is a motivator that never fails to keep me going back in the hope of more of it.

FINALLY a break in our weather. Squeezed in a 20-miler this morning.

Zip Sunday but today rode 16 mile round trip for bike club monthly meeting downtown.

Nice!

Bonked. 44 miles, 4,800’ climbing up 2 ‘gaps’. About 75% gravel. Ran out of water, steam and battery power on the final climb. Need to be better prepared for this approx. 65 mile, 6,000’ loop.

Sorry it didn’t quite work out, but I bet you get it right next time. Could I ask which gaps you went over and what the full 65 mile loop would have been? We have a second home in VT (near Burlington) and I’m always on the lookout for good road and gravel routes.

So, you couldn’t ask me about a route I actually completed?! (Just kidding! :). The gaps were Rochester And Roxbury. Here’s the route:

https://www.mapmyride.com/workout/3551743723

I started in Randolph, rode over Rochester Gap and ended up (a broken man) on Roxbury Mt. Road. The route is a bit circuitous because I was going for as much gravel as possible. The last stretch would be over the top to Roxbury and down 12A back to Randolph. It would be easy to make an almost all paved ride out of this by taking Camp Brook Rd. up to Rochester Gap and by following Rt. 100 instead of the back roads I used in Rochester and Warren.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I suspect I’ll give it another go sometime this year.

Thanks much. That IS a tough route -- almost 4,900 feet of elevation gain in only 44 miles! BTW, I think you did the right thing trying to maximize your gravel, even if it meant the route became a bit circuitous. Some kind souls have mapped out some nice gravel routes in the county to the west of where I live and they're all like that.

28 mostly flat rural mile this morning on a club ride. Only 6 riders on 2 tandems and 2 singles because it was cool and rain threatened. No rain till after the ride. :)

I finished Assault on Mt. Mitchell yesterday for the second time in three years. As I started up the mountain I kept asking myself what in the world made me sign up for this again. At least I PR'ed. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e046601c91.jpg

45 miles with local road club's B-group. First ride with them since my shoulder injury and thyroid cancer last year. Managed to hang on without getting exhausted for the first time. Energy level still feels low, like thyroid med isn't at correct level, but I'm gradually regaining some lost ground.

Well done!

I rode up Fox Hill on a 22 mile ride early this afternoon after the rains passed. 121 feet of elevation gain on that hill but I was breathing pretty hard! :)

Rode past the road to the top of Mt. Mitchell when riding the Blue Ridge Parkway with my wife in 1981 but felt no urge to go up it. Very impressed by folks who do the annual Assault.

18 miles, 2,500’ on gravel and gnarly pavement.https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...74da30b33.jpeg

frogbiscuit 05-23-19 07:41 AM

Yesterday 17 miles, about 1/2 mile of bone jarring craptastic gravel. Probably stay on the pavement today and do about 15.

Oh and I also went to the gym and did a bit of lifting.

Sounds like the kind of route where you look forward to the gravel sections because of how smooth they are.

Love the sign!

Began at 12:20AM today and had 66 miles of moonlit magnificence with only one thump-thump caused by an opossum. Called it quits early with plenty of dark still left because I was feeling a tad tired. Showered, pj's on, some eats, surfed the net then stretched out on the couch for a quick 50 minute nap. Kitted up again and out the door for an additional 64 SUN FILLED HOT miles.

12 easy local miles late this afternoon. Feeling a lot like summer - 80's and humid.

horatio 05-24-19 04:28 PM

It's 97 outside my front door at almost 6:30 p.m. Too damn hot to ride.

2cam16 05-24-19 04:33 PM

Up in the hills this morning shredding on my mtb on a gorgeous Bay Area morning. It was around 70 during my ride.

When do you sleep?

A quick answer with a little video -----

Thursday night got an unusual 4 hours of good sleep. Friday daytime (retired 68yo geezer) had 3 cat naps of 1.5 hours total. Started my Friday night ride at 11:11PM. Made one stop at mile 112 then hooked up with Sat. LBS ride only for a couple of too fast miles.

Last night/today's one stop fun ride --- took some time to get into the groove since the wind was gusty at times.
