76 miles, 4000’ of hills in cloudy 40 degree temperatures

13 miles in the afternoon, taking advantage of the unusual 50°f temps that gave me a window of just two short hours to ride in the warmth. I chose the local network of gravel roads to enjoy and the soft easy speed felt wonderful. Met two of my neighbors enroute, so stopped both times for a chat. That meant my last mile ran right into rapidly dropping temps. I could feel the growing cold through my lightweight cycling jacket. Got home just in time. It is now 25°f.

The only reason it wasn't arguing is because I let him do all the talking. If there'd been an opening I would have taken it, but he wasn't interested in listening. It'll take animal control and/or the sheriff to do that.

The dog came at me out of the dark from the rear quarter, silent until he's barking right next to me, then he chased me for about eight houses down the road. Big hairy thing, maybe 80-100lbs. He does that **** every time. The place is at the top of a longish hill so I have little speed whichever way I come from. I circled back to make the point that it's my road too then I decided to sit there and let him bark until the owner came out.

That took a few minutes (around 9PM) then finally some lights came on and the owner came out. His point was that this is fine and I really shouldn't worry about it and he basically blew me off. I started out feeling some understanding but not after that.

I went back later and left him a letter in his mailbox telling him it's dangerous and he has to keep his dog out of the road, mentioning not having called animal control *yet* and suggesting what would happen if I got hurt.

I checked county regs and it's very clear, a dog that roams off of property is a "loose dog" and it's illegal. This owner won't do anything because he doesn't want to do anything, so next time I'll drop off another letter telling him he has a month to fence his dog to give him time to do whatever site work it takes. After that when it happens again I'll call animal control, and get that ball rolling.

Today's commute to work was around 20 F (-6 C). The trip back was much warmer -- somewhere around 48 F (-9 C). It's about a 10 mile round trip. I miss the snow and hope we get some soon. In the meantime, sights like this make for a great trip home, as does getting Christmas Eve off.

Had Christmas stuff to do today but at 65 degrees couldn't resist doing 21 miles in N. GA today. It was sunny and perfect for riding.

16 miles today. First ride in 10 weeks. Meant to take it easy, but I pushed it. Just couldn’t resist.

It was supposed to be a shakedown ride for the Botty, but I broke the chain at one mile into the ride. Made the call of shame, parked the Botty and hopped on the Six-5. Felt real good to be in the saddle again.

A six mile ride this morning before a small family Christmas get-together and then later a seven mile ride as the sun went down. Got up to about 60F which is amazing for central Indiana on this date. Took in more calories today than I burned up. But what are you gonna do when spouse makes a black raspberry pie, etc. Another holiday get-together yesterday evening with no cycling to offset the food - too much time spent instead on wrestling with our water heater to replace both elements so that we and our guests would have hot water for the holiday.

Almost 70F here today at the start of winter. This evening, sunset into full dark, 28.6 miles. I explored a new route up into coyote land -- yes I heard them -- and ended up on a two-lane 55mph highway after dark, which wasn't good. I pulled off each time a car approached and left that segment as soon as I could. A good ride but too darn hot.

A nice 50+ mile from the house over to the in-laws house for a holiday gathering. I’m lucky to have a spouse that sets the meal time late enough to allow me enough time to ride my bike over......and drive me back home! I have lots of route options so chose the shorter but route will more hills. Looks like it was about 2800’ of hills. Temps were in the low 30s with heavy frost at the start but warmed up to the high 50s over the 3 hour ride.

20 miles today which is twice in three days. Felt good on the ride but legs a bit sore now. I'm wondering if I need to ride a bit more or if maybe at 70 if I need at least two days between rides?
Hard to tell when we're having these unseasonable warm temps for this time of year. But sure enjoying these low 60s...just perfect riding weather 'cuz I don't particularly like warm OR cold.

I recently picked up a new 11-32 lightweight cassette,DA crank and DA C24wheels....time to get them on the Serotta and see how much faster I'll be now that Spring as come early.

No riding for the time being. The bike is disassembled and full of framesaver (WD-40 Specialist Long-term Corrosion Inhibitor) with all the openings stopped up.

An 85 miler with 70 plus miles with 4 others. About 3800’ of climbing at 18+ mph in 35-65 degree wweather. Thought about adding 15 miles to make it a 100 miler but I wised up.

I made myself go out in the cold and ride 15 miles for my 200th ride of the year. Recovering from minor shoulder surgery so my rides lately have been short.

Odd weather today -- warm, very windy, rainy. But I needed to ride to maintain my training for an upcoming 50 miler. Today was just 26 miles, but with the wind and rain in my face for half the ride it was a hard 26 miles. The ride follows along a large river and there were whitecaps on it. Managed a pace of 15 mph and called that good, but was WIPED OUT afterward. You know the kind of ride where it's painful while you're doing it, but afterwards you have a strong sense of contentment for having conquered it -- this was one of those.

I took advantage of the nice 56 degree day. Got a late noon start on the local Mississippi river trail, so only got in just under 25 before the chill started in. I took a new to me Specialized M4 26" wheeled mtn. type bike It only weighs 26 lbs and made in U.S.A. If I can figure out the picture thing I'll introduce it in another thread.

I got 43 miles in. I made my goal of 5,000 miles for the year. I was way behind three weeks ago and had to push it. Doing just about 200 miles a week to get it in. It was a beautiful day as well, 70 and overcast.

Can you believe the weather here in Richmond, VA? Here it is, Dec 30th, and it is 72° outside!! I decided to take advantage of this opportunity (while we're in a lull from the rain) and got out my beloved '85 Fuji Del Rey and went for a quick spin around the neighborhood. 6.60 miles in 25:30. Not too bad for not riding in a while...

Yep. 21 miles with a bunch of hill repeats in there. I have realized that, even though it is quite hilly here, I still have kind of two different levels of fitness going on with me right now. Endurance-wise, I'm pretty good. I can go and go and go at a decent clip for me. But I am not nearly as fit on the tougher hills. So, I decided to do something about it. There is a portion of my usual city ride where there are four parallel blocks of maybe 150 yards length that are all pretty steep in the 7.5% range or so. Plenty steep for me.

Well, these hills are definitely giving me a workout, doing them back to back. I'll stick with this for a couple of weeks and then go climb one of these little volcanoes here and see if I have improved. Kinda fun to have something to work on, as endurance stuff is really fairly doable for me right now. Not that I could go do 200 miles without stopping--I' m sure I couldn't. But I could do a hundred with minimal stopping. So, anyway, onward. Those hills are calling...
