I am 51, but don't tell anybody. That is what it says on my birth certificate and my passport.
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? I have four bikes currently, including a chromoly steel 1970s 12-speed, a custom titanium touring road bike, a hybrid touring bike, and a utility bike. 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? I take vitamins. The main dietary change I have made is no more red meats. I eat "kosher style", meaning that I don't eat non-kosher foods, but i don't prepare my foods in a kosher way, in a special kitchen. Compared to when I was younger, I eat a diet very rich in fruits, nuts, and vegetables, and I get my protein from eggs, fish, and chicken, but never from beef. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? I can bike for as long as I ever could, for as many hours in a day. However, the distance or speed I can do is not as great as it was in my 20s. I can compare what I once did on timed rides. Whereas my maximum sustained speed then was about 22 mph, now it is about 18 mph. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? I have biked all my life, except for a few gap years in my early 40s. When I was in my early 20s, I always weighed about 170 lbs, and I was a serious exercise junkie. However, I was never good enough to be competitive as a runner. I was the also-ran on my college's cross country team. I managed to stay down around 180 lbs until I was in my early 40s. Then, when I stopped cycling and running, I started to gain weight. I was never out of shape, but I can remember how a few years ago, I used to put on clothes I once wore and find with frustration that they no longer would fit me. The wake-up call was when I hit 199 lbs a few years ago. That got me to change my diet and get on my bike again. Now I am down to 175 lbs once again. I now can wear clothes that I have had since college once again, and I have a number of pairs of pants that are too large for me. What should I do with them? Be optimistic, and keep riding that bicycle. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? I don't tend to ride every day, but when I do ride, I really ride hard. I recently got back into long distance bike touring. Last summer I rode from Chicago to New York, with loaded panniers. It took me 12 days to get to the Catskills. This summer, I will be riding a comparable distance in Europe. I enjoy being one of the few older generation riders on the Critical Mass rides, which I especially enjoy on hot summer nights. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? I've never kept track on an annual basis. I did ride several centuries (miles, not kilometers) this year and last year. 7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? I don't do heavy exercise every day, but I tend to go for very strenuous travel, such as long distance bike touring and all-day skiing. Other than skiing, my activities (like biking and hiking) are lower impact. |
52 although often accused of acting like a 17 year old :-)
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? I'm on a Trek Madone 5.2 Carbon, + Specialized, + a Trek 1500 (on the Computrainer for the winter) and my old Raleigh International that's fun to show off once in a while on a club ride. 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? Even with all the riding, Doc has me on a statin and testosterone supplement and a baby aspirin every day. Potassium & some Rolaids (to prevent cramps) on the long, hot summer rides 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? Getting faster with the better training regime & equipment. Aiming to break the 5 hour Century ride mark this season. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? Lot's of road mashing in my teens, away from it until 4 years ago, now rediscovered and re-addicted 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? All road. Half with the local club & half solo. Anywhere from a 10 mile interval quicky to a 150 miler 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? Upper midwest provides about 7 months outside to fit in ~ 2500 miles / including 7 centuries + another 1000 on the Computrainer during the winter 7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? Occasional cross country skiing, sculling & indoor rowing on a c2. |

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? Trek Pilot 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? None. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? Some, but training helps. I can't keep up with 40 year olds any longer. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? 30 years plus. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? Tours, organized rides, solo rides, self supported touring, group rides, time trials, and trails. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? 1000 to 2000 usually. I bike at least once a week, more when the weather is good. 7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? Stay on the road all year unless it is too deep. (Tire acts like a rudder in snow) Some volleyball, cut wood, hike and move furniture where my wife wants it. |
Please tell us your age. 57 in 10 days.
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? '07 Lemond Sarthe (replacement for 80's Nishiki) and '86 Univega Grand Touring 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? No, I just watch what I eat. "All-natural everything, red meat only for special occasions, lots of fish and vegetables. No refined anything. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? Some since 50, but if I keep riding at least 25 miles every other day I actually get stronger and faster within weeks. Much less tolerant of "rough" conditions I was fine with in the past (stealth camping, going without showers, bad food, hazardous roads, etc.). 30- and 40- somethings leave me in the dust. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? All my life really - started with my first bike from Sears going back and forth to school in 6th grade. Moved to a Schwinn Continental in high school (didn't ride it much), then to a great Gitane that was stolen in college, then to a Raleigh Record (OK bike, very rugged - converted it to a touring bike in the early 80's), then to a Nishiki, then another Nishiki, and then the Univega for touring and the LeMond, which is new to me, last year. I wanted to get back into road riding that the Univega is just too heavy and slow. Besides, I wanted to "just ride" and not have to "go somewhere" each time I went out. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? Rec road rides, light touring, planning some distance road rides this spring around Utah. I hope to get back into distance touring when I get the Univega back in shape. Right now, though, I am lucky to get in 25-30 miles each day on weekends (I still work), and, when the weather gets a little better, daily loop of 20 miles and weekend 50+ out-and-back trips. Right now, I stay pretty close to home. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? I've never figured it out by the year. Now, in winter about 40+ miles per week (if I'm lucky), the rest of the year about 60-70 miles per week, usually leaving from the house and just doing some interesting loop. This is the first winter I have really missed biking when the snow started - I still crave daily rides... and can't wait to start again in spring (in about 6 weeks, maybe?). 7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? When it is not snowing or below 30 degrees, walking. I walk a 7-mile out-and-back when I can, uphill and back down. Other than that, just the usual stuff - working on the house and in the garden, shoveling snow in the winter, and (like OldRed) moving things around when that has to be done. I used to go to a gym, but gave that up after a year when I realized that I was not getting any stronger or lighter. Biking can do that for me in just weeks - in the gym it never happened. Plus the awful music, gross smells, and general chaos drove me out. |

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? 2001 Giant TCR02 Road Surly 1X1 Singlespeed Mountain Turner 5 Spot All Mountain 2007 Bianchi Axis Crossbike/Touring 2000 Turner 02 XC Mountain 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? Calcium (nothing the doctors gave me worked for depression till my wife had me try Calcium and it works. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? A lot, no matter how much I work at it, every year I lose a little more, but I can still hang with the fast group, most of the time. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? I gave up riding a bike when I started driving and didn't start again till 2000 so 7 years. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? Mostly longer distance rides. Most of our training rides are around 100 miles. I do a lot of double centuries and some randoneering. I'm also riding from Oregon to SoCal this summer pulling a BOB trailer. I also do some mountain biking which I dearly love. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? Well in the spring and summer and some of the fall months I'll ride 3 to 4 times a week, but with colder and rainy days I'm down to one and two. 7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? No, biking is my passion. I really should be doing something else though. I used to do tri's but it became more of a job then a fun thing. Some of the older guys I ride with are talking about starting a 50+ club in SoCal, but we only have 4 or 5 in our cycling club. Has anyone else done this successfully? |

61 (62 in April) 1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? 2007 Raleigh Venture 4.0. 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? Multi-Vitamin,baby aspirin, Calcium/Vitamin D pill, glucosamine/Chondroitin capsules 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? Have slowed down, conciously, since I suffered a herniated lumbar disc last year. I've learned that it is not imortant to physically challenge myself constantly - exercise is great, but I do not have to be "Mr. Physical Fitness." 4. How long have you been biking? Throughout childhood, of course, again in late 1990's through 2004, and picked it up for good this past September. 5. What type of biking do you do? Recreational, fitness. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? As often as allowed, but being careful as to not push too much vis-a-vis time and speed 7. Do you do any other type of physical activities? Exercis walking and weight lifting (with the latter I have again slowed down in terms of how heavy I go) |
What NOT to do when buying a new bike...
My wife and I have ridden bikes recreationally off and on all our life, but are just now getting back into it after about a 10 year layoff. :) This is mostly for fitness reasons but we also enjoy getting out and seeing the countryside and are hoping to also take our bikes with us now on our various vacations. In order to infuse some excitement into re-starting this activity, we decided to get ourselves new bikes. The bikes we had were 20 year old Huffy mountain bikes and needed some work to get them back into good ridding condition, so we thought we would just upgrade.
That's were I made a big mistake. :( A couple of years ago I remembered seeing an add for an "auto-shifting" bicycle and thought, since both my wife and I are in our mid to late fifties, this might make for a more pleasant riding experience. I looked them up on the internet and placed the order. The 1st mistake was not checking the bicycle forums (this actually may have been the second mistake, the first being thinking an auto-shift bicycle would be a good bike). :o We got the bikes in about 4 days, put them together and took our first ride. The first thing we noticed was that they were not light; the second thing, you had to peddle like crazy to get the thing to shift. So.. after the ride, I got out the manual and looked for instructions on making adjustments to the 'cadence' settings.. that's were I discovered a couple of other things about the bike.. 1) Engineered in the US, but made in China 2) workmanship was really crappy...it was impossible to make adjustments as described in the manual.. We rode them a few more times, to confirm the feelings that were beginning to overtake both of us.. that these were NOT the bicycle we expected... and were NOT the bicycles for us. We rode them at least 10 miles each trip out and includes a lot of hills, so we gave the bikes a pretty good workout (and got good workouts in return). That settled it.. we didn't like the bikes. Did I mention these were "LandRiders?" As their website says, they are so sure that we will love their bikes, they offer a "30 day road test guarantee". They tell prospective buyers that they can ride the bike for 30 days and return it for a "full refund of the purchase price less shipping and handling." This was mistake #2.. believing them. This is what happened: The bikes listed (on the website) for $499, but were "on sale" for $399. We ordered 2, for $399 each plus shipping, which was $87... total about $975. We called them to get return information and found out they also expected us to pay for shipping BACK to them if we returned them! That was unexpected, to say the least... but we were determined to send them back. When we received the RA information from LandRider in the mail, it also included an offer of an additional $100 off the price we paid for each bike if we would NOT send them back! This was a laughable surprise. But we were still determined not to be stuck with a bike that we felt was a "piece of junk". So we proceeded to re-pack the bicycles as per the instructions and took them to a shipping store. Another surprise awaited us there. We thought the shipping would be in the neighborhood of $50 per bike... again based on conversations with LandRider customer service... and that turned out to be close, but only after the person at the shipping store offered to re-pack the bicycles after the bulging packages we brought in were going to cost about $170 each! After spending an hour repacking, the size of the box was now reduced so the cost was under $100 to ship both bikes back. Expensive lesson we learned... about a $300 lesson. And I share it so others who may be considering LandRider or any other mail-order offer check all the "hidden" costs of any free trial offer. Had I searched the forums before making such a purchase, I would have found post after post warning about LandRider specifically and similar bikes in general. The story does have a happy ending, however, in spite of the costly lesson. I had done some additional research on various bikes and decided to take a look at the TREK line. After sending the LandRiders back, we visited a TREK bike shop and found freindly, helpful, knowledgeable staff who wanted to make sure you were happy with any purchase there... we were able to test-ride the bikes and get them fitted properly. We didn't have to pay shipping... and if we had to take them back, it was just a few miles away. So we purchased 2 great TREK bikes, an FX 7.2 WSD for my wife, and an FX 7.3 for me. We ride about 50 miles a week and plan to take them on a trip to the North Carolina mountains next week and to Marathon Key in the spring. We are thoroughly enjoying our new bikes! :D Hope this helps someone else who may be considering new bikes... ;) |

I have BAD v veins in my left leg. No pain or discomfort, just looks bad. Talked to a vascular surgeon about it two years ago. He said it would require surgery (stripping the veins) and they could come back in another area of the leg. Told him no thanks. Last month I talked to another doc about laser treatment for them. He said the right leg was a candidate but the left leg would require surgery. Same story, same answer. So I'm still taking the horse chestnut hoping it will stop the spread and keep the vein size and appearance under control. If you're interested here is link to a picture (not me - found on the web) of what my left leg kinda looks like. http://www.cosmetic-lasersurg.com/_b...aricose1_1.jpg If you have or are developing them see a doctor. The laser thing can be done in the morning and you can be riding the next day. Surgery requires several days in the hospital and no riding for a couple of weeks. Neither treatment option offers any guarantees that v veins won't show up somewhere else in the legs at a later time. |

I thought there might be some interest in a thread such as this. If not, it will go the way of all threads - just die away.
So, here is my first contribution. Some questions: Please tell us your age. .53(100) 1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? I'm sure they either ride what they have or ride what is available. My bike is a Cruzbike Sofrider. 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? No. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? A lot. Getting broken by cars will do that to you. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? I learned on a friend's "Stingray"... rode a primitive steel 10-speed ... rode motorcycles for decades ... now I'm riding this bicycle. I wish it were actually as downhill as it all seems. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? Bike for fitness, out on the public roads. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? I'm not anal enough to keep a log. Two to four times a week, averaging 20 miles per ride. 7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? Sometimes I tear up the local river in my home-made baidarka (fastest sea kayak on the planet). Perhaps, if you haven't already, you might indicate your age on your reply?? You may be suffering the effects of senile dementia...you already asked this question. -Here's where you thank people who respond; -Here's where the responder says, "you're welcome". :D |
