1. BIKE: 1992 Trek 820 with cross over tires for pavement and gravel/dirt

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? No

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? I can tell I’m not 25 any more. Injuries don't repair as quickly. I have to "work up to" a half century. I guess I've slowed down a little.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? Was always on the bike as a child. Rode most seriously 18-28 with lots of touring as well as daily transportation. Rode little 29-55. Just started back in summer of 2007. Feels good, working up to longer rides, considering some long tours again.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? Several times a week 10-25 road miles. A few longer rides 30-40 miles. Some mixed paved and gravel day tours. All of this is from home. I carry my bike when traveling to enjoy trails and greenways and rails to trails.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? At least 3/ week spring summer and fall. A little less in winter. Haven’t been back at it for a year yet. I estimate my annual mileage to be about 2000 and growing.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? I have a very physically demanding outdoor job that involves traveling on foot in steep often rugged terrain.

I don’t really ride for the exercise. I ride because it is fun and feels good to travel through the landscape at a reasonable speed. The effect on my health is incidental, but welcome.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Just bought a Fuji Newest 2.0. I've been riding a GT Karakoram for 13 years. Before that I had a Schwinn Continental for 20 years. Schwinn 3-speed was my first new bike at 9 years of age.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Multi-vitamin, vitamin C, & calcium.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? Yes. Fair amount. Hope to reverse that the next few months.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? Rode a lot as a kid. Didn't ride much at all from 14-30 years of age. I've been a casual rider. Started riding more last summer. Hoping the new bike will encourage me to ride more. I have been and will continue to ride more than I did earlier in my life. Just got my first bike computer yesterday.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? To date just short rec rides. Have commuted to work at times in the past.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? 30-60 minutes 4-5 times a week. Hope to join group rides once I'm comfortable on the new road bike.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? Light weight lifting. Jogged when younger, walked a lot the past year. Knee is shot right now so I'm only biking.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

This particular 50+ folk rides a Trek 7300 hybrid

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Yep. If I can remember them all...Vitamin A, B1, C, D, E and Omega3 fish oil. I'm hoping that increasing activity level will allow me to get off the Norvasc for blood pressure, but haven't cleared that one with my medicine man yet.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I feel better now than I have in years, so in most things no, I don't feel that I've slowed down. Unfortunately, despite how I feel, not all parts work as well as they used to, aches and pains are more likely and take longer to heal.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I learned without training wheels at age 5, rode everywhere until I discovered internal combustion propulsion at age 16. I only started cycling again about two years ago.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?

Short rec rides during the week, longer (but slower) rides with my girlfriend (hence the slower part) on the weekends.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

3 to 5 times per week. I estimate about 800 miles in 2007...I'm hoping to more than double that in 2008.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

I have recently added weight lifting and yoga-esque stretching to the cardio workout on one of those old style nordic ski machines.

Perhaps, if you haven't already, you might indicate your age on your reply??

I'm 52

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

My current bike is a KHS Urban-Xpress I purchased in mid-March. It's a GREAT bike! At some point I would like to buy a carbon road bike, again, probably a KHS Flite 720.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Multi-Vitamins

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Not much, but recovery takes a bit longer, and I'm not as nimble as I used to be. I hope to reverse this with the new TotalGym XLS I received a couple of weeks ago.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

In the early 70's I rode a Schwinn Continental to school and around town before I owned a car. In the late 80's I road a Specialized RockHopper and in the early 90's I rode a Trek carbon bike, I can't remember the model, for the MS150 a couple a years. I laid off biking after that until this past March when I purchased my KHS Urban-Xpress.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?

I generally ride around town late at night to avoid traffic. I try to do 5 - 10 miles per ride. Since I don't own a car my bike is my basic transportation. I would love to get outside the city and ride country roads like I used to do.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

I try to ride 4-5 times a week. At this point I don't know my annual mileage, but my computer shows 294 miles.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

From the early 80's until the mid-90's I worked out 3 times a week. I recently bought a TotalGym XLS and hope I can get back into the shape I was in back then.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
”I” currently ride a road race spec 2007 Motobecane Le Champion equiped with SRAM Force components and Richey WCS wheels & cockpit. I have owned many, many bikes, mostly road, a few ATB bikes(all hard-tail), a few shop-rat bikes and some cruisers.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

I currently work in the natural/organic foods industry. I eat extremely well and take natural supplements/herbs/homeopathic as needed…especially as I entered my 40’s.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Mentally not as competition focused. Physically I heal slower and require more recovery time. I do not compete any longer. I ride for fun, health and site-see a lot more.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I have been riding bikes seriously on/off for approx 36 years, 90% road 10% off road. This includes road racing, managing bike shops, misc R&D and working for various companies in the industry. I am very new to Web bike forums (Fall-07).

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?

At present Short to long depending on schedule. Tooling around with my lady to be with her, the air and nature. I like to ride fast, climbing is my real passion...as are fast descents.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Varies tremendously day to day, week to week. Used to rack up huge miles, not so anymore, at least for now. Roads stink in my area, have to drive to good riding.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
Alpine skiing for 30+ years, rock climbing, hiking, camping, martial arts for 20+ years (numerous disciplines), gym workouts, pilates, yoga.

Please tell us your age. 53

What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? I currently have a Cannondale road bike, though I've ridden several different bikes over the years, from a Sears Free Spirit (my first) to a Fuji, and then one of the Trek 2300 carbon frames. I've also got a Specialized mountain bike that I just bought this year. I'm a real wuss in the woods, but I still love to go trail riding.

Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? I've never taken any vitamins or supplements in my life and I'm not about to start. I eat very well, lots of fruits and veggies, red meat only occasionally, mostly chicken and fish, and I'm not a junk food adict.

How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? I can still hit my age on a downhill! :D I still feel I'm a pretty steady rider. I don't ride in groups too often, but I can always keep up with people 10 years younger than me. Doing 18+ mph average on a long-ish group ride is still doable.

How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? I started riding in the 70's when I was 20 years old, so it's been over 30 years now. So I've seen a lot of advances in bike technology. It sure is nice to be finally free from down tube shifters and 5 speed freewheels! Biked all my life? Uhhh, not yet!

What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? I like road rides from 25-60 miles for the most part, throwing in the occasional century once in a while. I have ridden a double century (twice) but it's been years since I've done so. I don't think I could do it now, even with a lot of extensive training. Mix up the road riding with some trail riding on the weekends.

How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? Usually around 3,000 - 4,000 miles per year. A good year might be as high as 5,000 miles.

Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? I like to go hiking. I used to X-C ski, but haven't done so in about 10 years now.

DnvrFox 06-19-08 07:53 AM

Welcome, Suzie

soiunds like you are REALLY into bicycling.

I didn't even start until I was 58 years old! Until then, my longest ride was 7 miles. Now (10 years later) I am doing about 150 miles per week.

Enjoy the forum.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I had an old 10 speed my neighbor gave me recently and I put $100.00 in it for brakes, tires, seat, grips and started riding around my office during lunch to build up strength. After building up to 10 miles in 1 hour each day, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a new Mongoose XR-250 to ride it to/from work. (9 miles each way). People tried to talk me into a nice road bike but I wasn't looking for an easy ride to/from work. I wanted a bike that I could get a good workout on as well as one that could take a beating. (I have to jump curbs and the roads to/from my work are rough and strewn with glass and other debris) So this Mongoose fits the bill perfectly with it's dual suspension and big knobby tires! My brother-in-law rides quite a bit and he is always changing flats and such since his bike isn't made for the kind of brutality mine gets. My only issue with it was the handlebars and this morning I replaced them with a better set with new grips as well that I bought at Buck's Bikes here in Austin, Texas. I can't wait to see how much better it is going home today.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

I suffered a major coronary event in 2000 and was on many different medications for years that were dragging me down with all the side effects. I heard of an awesome total nutritional system made by Isagenix and started using those products in July of 2006. Since then, I'm off all my meds and I feel better than I did in my 30's! I've been using Isagenix everyday since then and my wife and I have even started the home based business side of it as well. It's unbelievable to me the wonderful results I've had using it. (if you are interested in more information about this, email me at info@4u2bhealthy.com and I'll get back to you)

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I am now more active than I have been even when I was younger. I love the outdoors and love geocaching. :mad:Unfortunately, I am in need of total knee replacement surgery which I have scheduled late this year and that's what prompted my riding a bicycle again since that's really all I can do! Now that I'm into it, I will continue riding to/from work after the surgery since I love it so much and it's great exercise.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I've only been riding bicycles now for about 3 months. I rode quite a bit in my youthful years before I joined the military. (It was my only mode of transportation) I had an awesome 10 speed that I put a horrendous amount of miles on. I've ridden motorcycles all my life so really, I love anything with two wheels!

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?

Currently, I just commute to/from work (18 miles a day). I plan on adding a nice road bike to my inventory in about a year after I recover from surgery so I can incorporate leisure weekend, long distance riding into my schedule as well.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Currently, I ride at least 3 days a week and starting this week, upped it to 4 days. My plan is to ride 5 days a week. So that will be between 72 and 81 miles each week.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

:thumb:I converted a bedroom in my home into a gym (my 3 boys are grown and gone now so It's just my wife and I) and I was doing weight training 3 days a week until my knees gave out. the pain became so unbearable that my whole physical life came to a screeching halt until I had my knees checked and was told by my doctor that I could ride for exercise until I had my surgery. He's got me taking Alieve twice a day to manage the pain (which is working great) and I plan on getting back to weight training next year after I recover.

Perhaps, if you haven't already, you might indicate your age on your reply??

:)I'm currently 51 years young. I don't feel old at all!

DnvrFox 06-19-08 11:07 AM

My wife had a total knee replacement and now rides all she wants.

Thanks for posting.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I have a Gary Fisher Tassajara with road tires.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Just a multi vitamin and added zinc. I seem to eat a bit more ibuprofen than I used to though!

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I'm not really as slow now as I was 5 years ago working a desk job exclusively!

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I had a nice road bike 30 some odd years ago that I loved. I am just getting back into cycling after a long hiatus.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. I'm riding about 10 miles a day, short rec rides in preparation to start commuting 7 miles one way to work. I've been riding around my neighborhood initially, then out some country roads to neighboring communities, and around town some, trying to get more fit, and having a ball in the process!

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Not sure yet. Like I said, I'm trying around 10 miles a day for about 4 weeks right now, but I'm already itching to go further.

7. I've been working out in the company gym for the last year an hour a day, 3-5 days a week. In that time I've lost 38 pounds. A 3 stent Angioplasty 3 years ago prompted the change. I'm still overweight, but I feel great and I'm still losing weight slowly.

Perhaps you might indicate your age on your reply?? I'm 51

Welcome. Looks like you are making great progress. I found that commuting was a great way to take my fitness up another notch (10 miles each way). If you can do that several times a week you'll notice a real difference in your fitness and stamina on the bike.

Welcome Bookman.

Do you still run? I tried it a few years ago and decided if I wanted to keep my knees I better find some other type of exercise. That's when I started cycling regularly.
