Cateye Wireless

My Cateye started blinking for some reason. All functions appear to be working ok, but speed blinks. Any idea about what causes this?

Cateye wireless are great- till a problem comes in. Time to change both batteries and then get it set up properly again.

Bikes: None.

It's the 'Stale Air' warning. Let all the old stuff out of the tyres and put some fresh in. Shame on you.

Apart from the blinking, how do you like the wireless? I have the cateye strada, which I mostly like, but I've had occasional problems with it. The cadence pickup moves out of place and the wire sometimes is a pain. I've been thinking about upgrading to a wireless unit, but I've heard that some of them sometimes lose the signal between the pickup and the computer.

I've had only a minor problem, which was easily solved. I have a front Dinotte light. When I positioned the Dinotte battery pack to close to the Cateye, I lost all function. Moved battery pack to top tube - problem solved. I changed both batteries in the unit today. Guess I'll see tomorrow if problem is solved.

The problem with wireless is the same problem with anything else that uses radio signals, that is RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). There are many sources of RFI, from pagers (which seem to be able to wipe out any radio signal within 10km) to electrical transmission lines to portable phones and microphones, even the traffic signal box, and the car your beside. The transmitter on a wireless bicycle computer uses an incredibly tiny signal, for a couple of reasons, one it has a limited power source and two it's limited to the restrictions within the unlicensed radio bands. It doesn't take much to disrupt the signal, and then there is a problem, you either lose a few ticks, or you gain a whole bunch of false ticks. If there is too much interference the unit has to give up until it can re-establish the connection. If it gives up, some of them may do a complete reset to zero, others will estimate the missing data. Seems reading down further that the Cateye will reset to zero.

FWIW, I have around 7000 miles on my unit with no resets. My understanding is that this unit had many of the problems being discussed here in the past, but they have been resolved in the last couple of years. As I mentioned, I had a problem with the proximity of another battery pack, but I don't think this qualifies as a RFI.

I bought a shop brand wireless that did all kinds of weird things, it seemed to be sensitive to everything from street lights to cell phones. I emailed product support, and they suggested I send it back and get a Cateye. I did, three years ago, and except for a battery change, it has performed flawlessly.
