I don't want to sound paranoid about liability, but I wouldn't want someone to accidentally assume such unwittingly. There was a recent thread this August on the Fifty Plus Forum that discussed the issue in: "Has Anyone Ever Organized a New Biking Group?"

What I would help out with is suggesting rides that are common to riders in the area, poll the group to see what the comfort level is and provide directions, maps etc.

If there is any question of my personal liability, then count me out, I wouldn't want to ride with a group like that.
A cynical talk show host here in Boston has a catch phrase, "No good deed goes unpunished."

I would tell you that I would never sue anyone who graciously invited me on an informal ride, say via Bike Forums. And to further quote Howie Carr, "You can trust me; I'm not like the others."

Personally, I know all kinds of routes around Ann Arbor, and I would be glad to make it a three day weekend of cycling with the OHR as a centerpiece. I'm also glad to advise accordingly, but without responsibility, FWIW.

While I could have actually afforded to pay up to $30, the whole $20 bike story is more about Divine Intervention I guess. As my secretary once told me "The Lord looks out for idiots and little babies Karl, so you're covered." Unfortunately, I've thrown away the piece of duct tape/bill of sale, so I'll gladly pay for my pie!
Here's a shot of the well spent $20 as I brought it home from last year's ride. The seat and seat bag are the only extras.

Holy smoke. You better paint that bike or otherwise disguise it. The rightful owner is probably looking for it.

Ha! It had YEARS of grime and basement funk on it, believe me! It took several hours of cleaning to get it shiny again. I'd torn the derailleur off my Miyata on a ride that day(see 2nd annual 50+ thread), so when I passed this bike on the side of the road, I just thought I'd buy the thing for a derailleur for the next day's ride! Didn't realize 'til I started cleaning it it was a pretty decent mid-80's boom bike. Guy said it'd been in the basement almost 20 years, and the wife just wanted it gone....bless her heart! Still riding the tires that came on it, ha!

Often not the individual's choice. Many people don't realize it but when they signed the contract with the insurance company they assigned rights to sue in their name to the insurance company. Whether or not that happens is a business decision by the insurance company.

I guess I really don't know what the possible participants are looking for. Are we looking for someone on this bike ride to be ready to fund treatment of any and all injuries that may occur, and related damage to bicycle and other property?

I don't see how such coverage can be provided. And if I invited one of you to accompany me on a bike ride, I would not be committing to providing such coverage.

In exchange for the $3.00, was that coverage promised? if not, what was promised, other than permission to participate in the ride?

The Ann Arbor ride usually costs about $30 (or more or less depending on advance registration versus day of event, and if you are already an AABTS member), which goes to pay for event expenses, such as food, rest stop equipment and services, SAG/support/sweep vehicle expenses, and I think for police services at difficult intersections. I think the waiver that is required to be signed (I need to get a copy and post it, or at least the text) was essentially a hold harmless.

If you get hurt riding in Vegas we duck tape you to your bike and throw you in Lake Mead. It keeps the lawyers out of the picture.

I have already taken a preliminary step of requesting that week off on our 2011 Vacation Calendar at work. As I have mentioned previously, we visit Michigan about three times a year for planned family events. While a one day ride wouldn't bring me out there for a spontaneous visit, a Bike Forum Rally likely would, as it did for a seven hour drive to Watkins Glen this past summer.

About a block away one can turn north into the sidestreets of a quiet residential neighborhood with some of the town's better hills. It's not near the start of the OHR, but about 10 minutes pedaling from downtown AA, with excellent coffee and a few brewpubs. About 20 min from my house.

There's another a bit better situated, and with an excellent restaurant, but a lot more $.

In the Major Shopping Mall district, there's a Hampton Inn and an Extended Stay America. These are priced in between the other ones. We also have Red Roof and the other usuals.

.....!
I continue to have an interest in doing a ride in Ann Arbor. As to motels, "affordable" to me just means around $100 or a little less per night. It doesn't have to be super cheap. Your first or second options sound pretty good. Speaking for myself, I would like to be able to ride my bike from my lodging site and not put it on the car. I also prefer to ride more or less continuously without constant stops for traffic etc., though I would not rule out a little relaxed urban/suburban cruising. Exception: I don't mind driving and transporting the bike to get to the OHR ride start from a motel. As to the liability stuff, I just don't see it as an issue... the OHR ride takes care of itself and otherwise it's just a group of friends meeting up to ride their bikes. We aren't paying any kind of registration for this, other than OHR, so there would be no group to hold liable for any accident.

At the risk of overstepping my rights as a non-member of our membership committee, perhaps you could assist Road Fan as kind of a "junior auxiliary" host/guide? And if you are excessively young you may be required to carry a bag of bricks on rides as a weight handicap!

On behalf of the Council of the Elders I declare that you shall not be shunned if you show up. Please bring a six-pack to assist with your initiation! I assume there is a regional Michigan beer we need to know about.

If knee pain is all it takes then I qualified as a teenager. I still remember my physician forty years ago telling me I was developing arthritis. Like so many things, I have misplaced my knee pain over the years. I'm sure I'll find it again. (It's probably in a closet somewhere with my mind.)

At age 26, my rheumatologist told me I could be in a wheelchair by the time I was 40. I'm cycling 5,000 miles a year. What did he know?

Sounds like tsl's rheumatologist was at least close. Tsl is spending a lot of times sitting on a thing with wheels.

Yeah, if it was a recumbent, I could call it an inline wheelchair.
