From: Watching all of you on O.B.I.T.

Bikes: Bridgestone RB-1. Nicely restored

The way I see it simply this: If you are looking for a place where everyone is highly agitated, full of Urine and Vinegar, (So! That's what they make Red Bull from!) where the ability to personally attack and insult is admired, and where everyone seems to want to fight, well, there are plenty of forums on the web that seem to be devoted to just that purpose. This is not that place.

We now return control of your television set to you.

You are right. Everytime I fly into Morristown from Barbados we cross the Jersey shore and overfly Robinsville looking for those elusive Blueberry crops.

Worldly?? What the heck is that. Sometimes making it through the day for this 71 yo is a major accomplishment.

Here was my morning's email from his care giver regarding my 43 year-old son with the profound developmental disability:

Last night approx. 9:51 I heard he screamed so I ran to his room. He was having a full blown behavior. He was trashing in his bed, shaking the bedrails pulled the curtain and blinds from the window, biting his hands yelling, screaming. I I had to pull the bed away from the window. The full display of one of his behaviors. He had a good weekend, a good day, his caseworker was here visiting with him. He was in his room watching TV. After she left he had is his dinner, his bath, his meds then he went to sleep. I honestly was shock I could not believe what I was seeeing. All I can come up with is, he was having a nightmare. I have no other explanation. He was in this mode between 10 and 12 mins.
Don"t know what to say or think.
Fortunately he is fine today, and this is a very rare occurrence.

Wife and I went to the MD's today in regards to her continuing and never-ending sinus swelling and related eye problems. Going to the MD's Thursday about her torn meniscus and whether or not she needs a knee replacement. Just finished recovery from my L4-L5 fusion and discectomy. I'll bne going to a meeting in January in the never-ending fight for continued services for my son.

I know several other folks on the 50+ subforum going through similar situations.

My point being, I don't come here for agitation, snarling and periodic attacks from what I consider to be the Red Baron strafing any forum he visits to see how many folks he can upset and hit with his verbal bullets.

To me, this is sort of a refuge, where I get to delight in the successes and at times amazing accomplishments of other 50+'rs (and 70+'rs), and seeing someone who was fat and flabby and exhausted and overweight absolutely BLOSSOM into a more healthy, less weight and a lot of endurance 51+'r or 61+'r or 71+'r or ??. This even includes watching 50+ folks enter (and sometimes really succeed) and telling us about the worlds of racing, randonneuring, cyclo cross, touring and so many other interesting and vital activities. And, of course, the beautiful pictures of bikes that have been built and/or acquired - much mixed with subtle and clever humor.

Folks, if you want arguing, "worldliness" - whatever that is - that is why God made the Road and P&R forums - please go there with your "worldliness." I'll take a happy, friendly group of supportive folks any day.

And, if it continues to be a strafing ground for folks with insufficient egos playing games with us, then I won't be around to see it disintegrate.

Been around trhe block a few times (too many).

Denver

With all respect and in a spirit only of contributing to the general well-being and knowledge of this community (), perhaps you'll let me quote Wikipedia (the bane of all librarians):
'Finds of spun, dyed, and knotted flax fibers ... shows they made cords for hafting stone tools, weaving baskets, or sewing garments, and suggest that they knew how to make woven clothing ... These early humans used manganese and iron oxides to paint pictures and may have created the first calendar around 15,000 years ago.'

Oh, what with jdon being a pilot and a long distance cyclist, I was referring to the nomadic nature of the Cro-magnon man. It's got nothing to do with jdon's teeny-tiny brain.

I've stayed out of this fracas but it's time for my feeble opinion, for what little it matters.

To me, this forum reflects life. It's just a cross section of society in general. The vast majority of the participants visit here to share cycling related experiences. Sometimes we write about non-cycling stuff but that's only to be expected and is often a nice tangent. We have our 'Class clowns', our grumpy folks, our well to do folks and our just barely getting by folks ....well you get the picture.

For the most part this place seems quite sedate and appears on the surface to be populated by peaceful, kind, and supportive individuals. In spite of all of our differences we tend to treat each other equally and with civility. Generally if anyone here occasionaly offends another a quick and sincere public apology follows.

But there are a few two-faced individuals who when they feel offended will post a sedate public response while at the same time sending a very nasty , offensive, even accusatory private e-mail to the perceived offendiing individual. O.K., there are people like that everywhere you go. On my good days I try to laugh them off and get on with my life. On my bad days I become scarce. I'll admit, there are some posters here that I just don't read. I'm sorry but for one reason or another I just don't like them. Not all that different than real life.

I hope to continue to enjoy the best of the 50+ and will continue to try ignoring that part of the 50+ that I either dislike or plain old don't understand. No keyboard jockey will be raining on my parade, not this late in my game. I've got my bikes, my tools, and my camera and a lot of nice folks here to share my interests with. Hell, I've even made a friend / riding partner thanks to this forum, not to mention a couple of good internet friends.

So yes for the most part I think it's kinda sedate here, as sedate as life in general.

No, no. When a man asks " What was THAT supposed to mean?" it is a genuine question. He doesn't get it. Women don't do that. They prefer to tell you what you didn't mean or say and normally start it with "Oh, so what your saying is..."

Now, what were we talking about again?

Perhaps the term is disliked because it is not pronounced correctly (at least in my experience). If you say it 'in French', it is not ugly at all.

It may be off point, but I wonder what kind of bikes they rode...

Everything sounds beautiful if you say it in French. "Dog poop" is "Descards de canine".

Speaking of pee and we were weren't we? There was a time when I could pee over the inner tube of my belly boat. (fancy inner tube with a seat-great for fishing small lakes, ponds, etc) Now I can't even make it past my waders. Of course they also leak.

The issue is summed up for me by these few posts.

Obviously, no one wants to feel offended, ever. But especially not in a place that has come to mean so much to them. Thick skin, thin skin is not the issue: there are times when there is no doubt that "the line" has been crossed and the profanity and insults are intentionally meant to be hurtful. In my view, that is bullying, and is it the right thing to witness and then just ignore?

I would hope that anyone who posted here, think about their audience as perhaps guests in their own yard, and treat them as such.

No, no. When a man asks that, it is usually a deflection technique. The genuine question he should be asking, is "What did you say? I haven't been listening to you for the last five minutes, even though you said it was really important."

That has been Denver Fox's point all along. He doesn't go there to avoid that kind of "discussion" so he doesn't want to see it brought here. Valid point.

I've spent too much of my life making mistakes, fighting fights I didn't need to fight, and doing things that caused me and other pain, and frankly I grew up and got tired of that. I like it here. I no longer need to feel like this (Courtesy of the Ramones):

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go I wanna be sedated.
Nothin' to do and no where to go-o-oh I wanna be sedated.
Just get me to the airport put me on a plane.
Hurry hurry hurry before I go insane.
I can't control my fingers I can't control my brain.
Oh no no no no no.
Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go. I wanna be sedated.
Just put me in a wheelchair, get me on a plane.
Hurry hurry hurry before I go insane.
I can't control my fingers I can't control my brain.
Oh no no no no no.
Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go I wanna be sedated.
Nothin' to do and no where to go-o-o I wanna be sedated.
Just put me in a wheelchair get me to the show.
Hurry hurry hurry before I go loco.
I can't control my fingers I can't control my toes.
Oh no no no no no
Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go. I wanna be sedated.
Nothin' to do and no where to go-o-o I wanna be sedated.
Just put me in a wheelchair get me to the show.
Hurry hurry hurry before I go loco. I wanna be sedated.
Ba-ba-bamp-ba ba-ba-ba-bamp-ba I wanna be sedated
Ba-ba-bamp-ba ba-ba-ba-bamp-ba I wanna be sedated
Ba-ba-bamp-ba ba-ba-ba-bamp-ba I wanna be sedated

I think it's highly unlikely that 50+ will ever be mistaken for P&R, except for transitory moments.
