Hi there. I've been on bikeforums for about two years now, and yesterday, I became qualified for the 50 and over club.

Been cycling seriously since 1975. I'm gradually getting back into riding almost every day now. For a few years, I hardly rode at all.

I have a bike collecting habit I'm trying to get control over. I'll sell a few this year, I hope. I also do repairs for neighbors.

And I'm an advocate. My friend Ellen and I co-founded the South Orange Maplewood Bicycle Coalition a little over a year ago. We're really busy. I'll be teaching bike repair to kids this summer. It's going to be a gas!

Tom

Hi Tom,

Glad to read your introduction. I can vouch for him as a good guy, since I've been reading his posts for the past two years, around when I started to subscribe. For some reason we exchanged PM's and he mentioned he was a bike mechanic in Cambridge, MA in the 1980's. He's pretty informative and friendly, IMO. Did you also tour?

BTW, he is a "friend" on my BF profile page. I have four and I'm not sure what that means, because I don't recall we have exchanged any PM's since.

Old farts rule!
I used to ride South Mountain before it was off limits. I put in a lot of miles in Maplewood, SO, Irvington, Union, Milburn, etc, etc.
Welcome to the club.
Enjoy The Ride (but not in Irvington)

If you know how to service your cottered crankset, then you truly are 50+ qualified.
Did you bring pie?

I'll go ahead and save the others the trouble: loose the dork disk and the brake extensions. And, welcome to BF and the 50+ hideout.

Thank you for the welcome, Jim from Boston. Yup, I paid my way through college as a bike mechanic. Those are some pretty fond memories. I have an almost complete bike shop in my basement now. It's tremendously relaxing to work on bikes when I have time. That's why I surround myself with too many bikes.

Metric Man, yes, we keep getting new members. Unfortunately, I'm sure we lose old members.

Have you noticed how many famous people have died lately? Now, that's a crisis! No new famous people are reported to being born in the last six months! What are we going to do?

leob1, I ride all around. When I ride in Irvington, I get smiles and hellos from the people on the sidewalks. I don't know why that is, but it's heart warming. (For those who don't know it, Irvington, NJ has become an extremely poor (small) city, and its crime rate is horrific. But for some reason, I don't feel threatened when I'm on a bike. It was the same way when I rode my bike through bad neighborhoods in New York City, growing up.

I had an English teacher named Miss Kenton in 7th and 8th grades. Your first name isn't Donna, is it?

billydonn, Drew University or Fairleigh Dickinson? I'm in Madison often.

Really Mr. Noglider! While it is true that I have been eligible to post on this forum for several years, I assure you I am not old enough to have been even your college professor, let alone your schoolmarm! Miss Kenton is a nom de forum.

miss kenton, sorry for the implication. Boy, women are touchy about their ages!

az_cyclist, I don't even know HOW MANY bikes I own. How can I answer your question?

I'm a C&V-aholic. Lately, the bike I ride the most has been a 1971 Raleigh Super Course which I've completely rebuilt. I'm planning to sell it, so yesterday, I got back on my 2008 Surly Cross Check. I also have a 1982 McLean racing bike, with 531 frame tubes.

Welcome, Tom. I used to wrench in a bike shop in the late 60s and throguh the 70s, part time. I was absolutely stunned at all the changes when I got back into cycling after the kids were old enough that I could be gone for a few hours at a time. Hope you enjoy you time here. Oh, and happy B day to another BF memebr born in Jan.

Belated Happy B-day noglider. I think it is just great that you are going to teach bike repair to some youths this summer. I wish I had someone like you around when I was learning by trial-and-error (mostly error). Welcome to the clubhouse.
