Didn't get a driver's license until I was well into the 60s. Then my first car was a Mercury Monterey with 390 cubic inches of raw power. It looked just like this one:

My second car was a 67 GT Shelby 500 with a 355 hp 428-cid Police Interceptor V-8 and 4 Hurst speed manual transmission. Almost killed myself in that car three times.

I drove whatever my mom and dad were driving, since I was just a gleam in their eyes until near the end of that decade.

Wasn't eligible to drive a car till I was 17 in 64--65 and I was in the Marines and drove a Land Rover Mk 1. Bit like your Willis jeep but with comfort- It had seats.

I drove my dads '55 Mercury while in high school. That car was hot - 0 to 60 in 7. Then I had a '53 Plymouth, bought with my own money. I hated that car. It never started unless it was parked on a hill. I still hate that car over 50 years later.

My first car was a 1961 Morris 850, AKA a "Mini". Mine was the only one I ever saw while living in Wisconsin. (I should mention that it was 1975 when I started driving the car).

I didn't get my driver's license until 1965. I was 20 years old at the time. My first car was a 1956 VW.

I was born in 1960.

My first car was a 52 Chevrolet. It had a Powerglide rear end with a 3 speed shifter on the column. The 3 speed differentials had 411 gears. The Powerglides had 376 gears which made it a better highway car. Mine had insert bearings in the 235 cubic inch six cylinder engine. I swapped the 6 volt system for a 12 volt system which greatly improved starting reliability and headlight performance.

I also had a 57 Chevrolet BelAir.

Although these are 1950 vintage cars I didn't own them until the late 60's.

Had a 54 Ford in-line 6-cyl. 2-door tricked out about the same. Got a lot of chiding from the v-8 guys about a 6. They all wanted to drag race. I didn't want to, but finally relented. Beat 2 out of 2 till they let me alone.

What they didn't know and I didn't know was the 6 was the first year with overhead valves. It had phenomenal torque and could keep ahead of a V8 until about 70.

Got bored with it, sold it to my dad with the agreement I could borrow it for dates. I got a Triumph Thunderbird 650 motorcycle. Much better as I'd had nothing but two wheels before. He did not like the stick shift and got rid of it for a brand new gold 57 Chevy coupe.

I came out way ahead on that deal since I now had a great car for dates. .

1949 Plymouth with a steering column 3 speed shifter. Bought it for $200, put 40,000 miles and a pink dashboard in it and sold if for $100 and replaced it with a 1953 Ford with a leaded hood, red wheels and a loud muffler.


However, I started driving when I was 12 in 1951 my dad's Willy's Jeep and 1949 Dodge with "Gyromatic" transmission.

Yup, back then men were men and boys were boys

As I recall I drove a lot of trucks back then....Let's see, there was...
* The six wheel Mack tractor with the eight wheel 40' box trailer
* the Jeep with a utility trailer
* a six wheel flatbed with stake sides and a two bay livestock trailer
* a four wheeled Army Big Gun Rocket launcher
* a Chevy Pickup
* a six wheel wrecker, boy I used that sucker a lot!
* a 10 wheel cement mixer
* a Coca Cola delivery truck with cases of soda and a two wheel dollie

And when I wasn't 'Drivin' Truck' I was gingerly guiding a 20 wheeled, freight haulin' Pennsy Turbine along the mainline. Yessiree, them was busy, busy days.

The trucks were Tonka, the steam engine was Lionel, and the fun was real.
