Delightful documentary on the 1962 Tour de France
A great way to spend 19 minutes of your life -- watch this documentary of the 1962 Tour by famed French director/producer Louis Malle. I just saw this on a bike blog today, but I see that it's been released on a DVD along with several other documentaries he did.
There is a lot here about the atmosphere of the race -- the crowds, how riders, eat, the team support on motorcycles, etc. -- and some moving racing scenes as well. There is a long scene of a rider struggling to stay on his bike; must be related to the "illness" issue mentioned below (? - I don't understand a word of French).
Definitely worth watching; good-quality version here on Vimeo:
EDIT: found a version of this on Youtube with English subtitles. It briefly discusses the doping controversy in that year's race. There's not much dialogue in the movie, but it's here if you're interested (and can't speak French)https://youtu.be/4B6ZycaBelU
Here's the Wikipedia entry on the 1962 race, including a doping controversy that apparently caused a number of riders to get sick during the race.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1962_Tour_de_France "After that stage, stage 14, had started, Junkermann quickly fell to the back, and had to give up. He was not the only one: twelve riders fell ill and said 'bad fish' was the cause. Tour doctor Pierre Dumas realized they had all been given the same drug by the same soigneur.[7] Fourteen riders abandoned the Tour that day, including the former leader, Willy Schroeder, the 1960 winner Gastone Nencini and a future leader, Karl-Heinz Kunde.[4] Jacques Goddet wrote that he suspected doping but nothing was proven - other than that none of the hotels had served fish the previous night. The newspapers ridiculed the riders, and this made the riders furious. They threatened to strike, but the journalist Jean Bobet, a former cyclist, was able to talk them into continuing. "
The director, Louis Malle: Au Revoir Les Infants; Atlantic City; Alamo Bay; My Dinner w/Andre, etc.: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001501/#Producer

I can't subscribe to the thread without replying because an add blocks the input form. A generic problem or tied to my tablet?

I like the way they interrupt the race to run into a cafe to stock up on wine and beer. Can't imagine it would be an intelligent way to ascend a mountain on a hot day.

I like seeing the barcons, the centerpull brake calipers, and the handlebar-mounted water bottles.

Just great !
Back in the day when Men were Men, wine was fine, and steel was real !
I can relate somewhat. I was a 15 year old Western Union messenger in
Baltimore Md at that time and riding an average of 75 miles p/day 6 days a week
in all kinds of weather. Watching this video brought back lots of memories of
suffering. Gotta admit though ... the singing telegrams were the worst *lol*
Outstanding video !!

I might add -- if you're shopping for a car in Europe this time of year, don't be tempted by the "lightly used" cars at the Skoda dealer...
