I hope she has a speedy recovery and a strong social/familial support system to help her cope with her new reality. Truly tragic.
I agree, our thoughts & prayers are with her.

Thanks for the reminder about the importance of ICE.
Here's a story to help illustrate what can happen if there's no ICE info:

In January of 2005, our 28 year old son stopped by the house for a visit after dinner. He left and we went to bed. We got a call from our older son at 0130, explaining that Daniel was in the hospital in extremely critical condition.

How did he find out? While Daniel was in surgery having his head re-assembled, the hospital went through his phone and tried to find family. Unfortunately, all he had in his phone was: first name/phone# for each entry. No last names, no other information.
So the hospital called several numbers, one of which was a friend of his brother's, who called and left a message on his brother's answering machine. When his brother got home several hours later he happened to notice the blinking 'message' light, called his friend (who had neglected to explain what hospital had called). Then he called us and we called the hospital (only 15 miles away) and arrived SEVEN HOURS after Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall.

It can get really complicated, but it can be much simpler with ICE!

My sympathies to that poor person. The problem I see with Licenses & State issued ID's is THEY DON'T HAVE EMERGENCY PHONE #'S!! Go to RoadID.com & get one. I keep mine in my helmet so I never forget it before I ride then it just straps onto your wrist or ankle. Plent of room for name, address, a couple of ICE #'s and medical info. Comes in colors for those who need aethetics & even have one that EMTs can connect on-line to retrieve medical history. If you ride alone you should get one. And no, I am not affiliated with Road ID.

Come on now, read the preceding posts. If you had you would have seen that although the thread started out only addressing one reason for ID it then pointed out that there are multiple reasons for adequate ID while riding.

Various state laws dictate what law enforcement and others should consider as proper ID when they make contact. Generally, that is government issued picture ID. That is one half of the ID issue. The other half is the need to contact family and friends so they can do their thing. That half can be taken care of in a variety of ways.

There, I saved you the trouble of reading all the rest. Don't be anonymous, ride with fun and adequarte ID for all purposes.

I understand the need for additional legit ID. I guess I'm addressing the issue if you're alone, 40 miles from home & laying on the road unconscious.

I can tell you from experience (sad but true) - WEAR YOUR BRACELET! In a serious accident, the bike is often ignore or set aside or even damaged or destroyed. First Responders routinely check for medi tags and ID bracelets on your body. It's better than a cell phone 'cause again that means someone has to think about looking for a phone. Road ID bracelet... best $25 spent! If you do rely solely on a cell phone, make sure your ride partners know where its kept. Of course if you are alone and knocked out... it can be no help at all.

In my 2005 accident I was knocked unconcious and seriously injured. The first responders notice my ID bracelet and, most importantly, the insurance plan listed and emgerency numbers. They called family and then sent me to the GOOD hospital not the "indignant" hospital because I had insurance. Just something to consider.
