All hail Dilbert. this guy's strips are in more cubicles than you can shake a stick at. I like the sentiment in this one for the 50+ reason.

Bill

Don't know why but I find myself reading the funnies less and less as I get older. The last thing I "read" was Far Side. I prefer that kind of stuff over , say something like Cathy with tons of words that really aren't very funny.

I was a Bloom County fanatic for many years. I used to own all the books but sold them all a few years ago.

50+ comics

Just comic strips or real live comics too?

One that comes to mind about the current real-life travails of the Fifty-Plus crowd, as opposed to nostalgic comics of our generation, is Arlo and Janis. Of note for me, back in 2008 I was reading their creator's blog (of Jimmy Johnson) and came upon an off-handed mention of a website called Bikeforums.net. :innocent:

Doonesbury is about it for me these days.

The "education" section is the first read of the morning paper for me. :)

It's never been the same without Li'l Abner.

Calvin caught my attention from this forum. This one just rings true on how we treat our misguided offspring.

Zippy is my role model. Are we having fun yet? Yow!
Not a chance that Zippy's strip would/will ever run in the Indianapolis Star but he frequents Funny Times, the monthly humor rag.

I'm more into Pat Oliphant who I think is the best editorial cartoonist alive, Kim Deitch, R Crumb, Marjane Satrapi, Ron Cobb, Art Spiegelman.

I miss Calvin and Hobbes

Not 50+ related, but it is cycling. Love the point it makes.

+ a kajillion on the comments about Calvin and Hobbes.

For me, the funny pages died when Bill Watterson retired.

andy2 03-09-12 09:23 AM

Li'l Abner, Pogo and Peanuts, none better.

jethro56 03-09-12 09:40 AM

I named a computer where all the upper management had to attach to to get production data "Dilbert". They had to go though a gateway computer called "Mordac".

Seemed appropriate.

Dan Burkhart 03-09-12 10:10 AM

Andy Capp, Calvin and Hobbes,Wizard of Id, B.C. and Li'l Abner were my favorite comic strips. When it comes to single pane comics, my vote goes to Herman.

My all time favorite has to do with needing some eunuch programmers. My son-in-law is a eunuch programmer but he spells it Unix. In the last panel the evil boss says "If the company nurse happens by, tell her I said 'never mind'."

Far Side. Best. Comic. Evar.

DX-MAN 03-09-12 06:17 PM

Far Side.
Calvin & Hobbes.
Andy Capp. (This was life with my ex-in-laws!)

Takes me less than a minute to peruse the funnies in the paper today, sad to say........

Mort Canard 03-09-12 07:57 PM

I have followed and loved Doonesbury, The Far Side, Bloom County, Shoe & Dilbert among others. My current favorite is Non Sequitur.

Matt Groening's other comic is always good: Life in Hell. Predates Bart and his family.

+1000 on that Dilbert strip. In my place of Biz, we have engineers and scientists who do very little engineering or science work. It's all powerpointless this, and powerpointless that.

Comics from my youth, that I looked forward to:

-Terry and the Pirates.
-Dick Tracy. During the 60s, they had the Magnetic Space Coupes, lasers, and all sorts of cool stuff. Oh yeah, good bad guys too.
-Dondi.
-Prince Valiant. Still published, but not the same.
-Gasoline Alley. One of only two strips I can think of, where the characters aged and eventually died. The other is "For better or worse".
-Peanuts, back when they had "Pig Pen". (can't have Pig Pen now, thanks to the thought police)

steve0257 03-10-12 06:42 PM

These were slightly before my time, but as a kid I caught the tail end of them.

Our Boarding House with Major Hoople

That seemed to be replaced occasionally by Out Our Way or There Ought To Be A Law
