My first attempt at a YouTube video ... riding through Zion. Ignore the breathless ranting, of course. I don't have a GoPro ... I did this holding on to the camera with one hand and steering with the other.

What causes that "flapping hanky" distortion in modern digital video recorders? It looked like the mountainous terrain was bending like a tree in the wind.

You mean like at about 1:00, 1:42 and 3:00? I think I know. That distortion isn't in the original file, but it appeared after the YouTube applied their stabilization processing to it.

It does look trippy ... like riding after too many cervezas.

You can see distortion like that if you use YouTube's image stabilization app.

If it were me, I'd take the video over to iMovie, reduce the background noise to nothing, and overdub Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht. Uber cool it would be, I think.

Quite cool to cold on the river but comfortably warm in camp, unless the wind blew off the water. It was an amazing trip.

And there is always an interesting character that comes to the grocery store. This guy rode in on a bike, and is wearing cowboy boots. I was wondering if he'd come out with a sack of money.



Then it ends back home, with 55 degree fog.

I don't know why this took me so long, since Yahoo is my home page, but I've finally started using Flickr. I'm testing to see how sharing bbcode style works... I think I'm going to give up using CHDK to save raws on my camera, since it takes too long, and I don't get much difference from high quality jpeg format. Oldest trick in the zombie book: lure you to the back of the house with promise of cheap, tasty tomatoes. Then eat your brains.

Did a 50 miler out Ventura way on Saturday... pretty flat (too flat) ride but there was lots of head winds. I call this "bikes and berries" - the Camarillo area is know for berry fields...




Sunday I did my usual Sunday climb up North Ridge to 4 Corners, Chino Hills. I go to place my bike up against a tree and found this little fellow all curled up and comfortable. He was tiny... actually hard to see. I choose to move my bike elsewhere...

No where near as spectacular as a photo of paddling a river in Alaska - but who can resist the opportunity to stop for pie? Well it turns out that everyone that I was riding with this day ... I was lucky they even stopped to take this photo for me.

Here's a question I'm pondering. Is it worth it to bother taking pictures in RAW format? It takes longer to take the picture, and it takes longer to do myself what the camera does automatically. I like the color in RAW better, but is it enough better to warrant spending the half hour to hour tweaking it to be just right, when the jpeg is "good enough?"

Here's a sample, courtesy of the model who obligingly posed for me, on the bush I clipped yesterday.

Over-simplification follows:

Raw is definitely worth while IF you don't mind spending a lot of time on photoshop, turning a good pic into a perfect pic.

If not - there's little real advantage.

(Also - Raw is particularly good at handling a wider contrast.)
