I see we're keeping in mind the fact that this is a cycling forum, as usual. Or are all you ageing cyclists talking about what you use to shave your legs?

It would be just fine to use that at L'Eroica. In fact that is so cool I want one myself.

You can tell when it's not good riding weather because threads about shaving devices go on for several pages. I just hope no one links an impartial government sponsored survey about the health risks of Fusion vs. Mach 3.

I mentioned bikes in my reply in case the on-topic police were on surveillance duty.

Did we get away with it?

One of our CBC Radio programs - "Under the Influence" (about advertising - available on podcast) had an item recently saying that Gillette had an unusual campaign to get its Mach 3 customers to upgrade to the more profitable Fusion, rather than trying to poach new users from other brands. Me, I stick with Mach 3.

For the past year I've been using two razors, my old Mach 3, and a slightly newer Schick Quattro Titanium. I alternate every day. The Mach 3 gives a closer shave (I can see stubble wash down the sink), but the Quattro cartridges last longer. I find I also prefer the thinness of the Mach 3. It's much easier to see what you're doing around the sideburns. I only buy the replacement carts when they go on sale.

But the best way to shave is with a mug and brush. I have no idea why anyone would get their cold shaving lather out of a can when they can brush on a warm lather.

The last time I shaved with a single-or double-edged razor, I would get the odd nick, which required the use of a styptic pencil. The multiblade shaving systems have never required this.

Cartidge shaving is a good example of modern marketing. I don't think I paid anything for the actual handle and the first cart; they were either mailed to me as a sample, or they came free with a package of batteries or something. But then the carts cost an arm and a leg! Like over $20 for 8 Mach 3 carts! This is why I refuse to upgrade to the current top of the line Gillette. I can still get Mach 3 carts. Just like giving away the cell phone, but locking you into an expensive long-term contract. This is why I like standardization on bicycles. On my traditional steel frame, I can pretty well use anybody's headset and bottom bracket. The newer designs with BB30 or differential head tubes kind of lock you in. I don't like getting locked in.

And as far as leg-shaving, I do not use the Mach 3 or the Quattro. I use the disposable Schick razors with the U-shaped blade holders. These allow the blades in the carts to bend slightly, which I think helps prevent cuts.

I use an electric when I trim & clean up my neck 2 or 3 times a week. As you can see in my avatar, I sport a beard. I do this in part as I have sensitive skin and constant shaving irritates it, especially the neck(razor or electric). As for my legs, my hair is very sparse on the legs, thin, and very light. From just about anywhere other than close up, it looks as if I do shave my legs.

Leg shaving was part of my original post, as was the reference my son made to DE razors and titanium bikes.... they last forever.

Left the Marines 40 odd years ago and stopped shaving. Still have my conventional safety razor I bought 50 years ago but for some reason( see Avatar)- it rarely gets used. Still have a pack of new unopened Wilkinson blades with it but Haven't seen it for a couple of years now.

Tried Electric and didn't work and when the Barbour tried to shave my neck 5 years ago with one of these modern throwaway ones- I showed him how to use a Cut throat. I Shaved with it and would not let him get near me with his shaking hands.

When I shave, I use a Norelo cordless shaver. Since retirement, I just buzz the beard with the trimmer for that "senior bad boy look."

Leg hairs were not a problem for a few years while I was having radiation and hormone therapy for my prostate cancer. There was none! Now that they are wearing off, I get small patches of hair on my legs that really looks dumb. I use the Norelco to the legs as well.

I bought my double edged razor in 1972 after leaving my other one in a motel. I was talked into one of those newfangled ones a couple of years ago and they clog up too fast....Hell, that's what they were designed to do so you'll have to replace them more often, lol. I take a throw-away on trips through the airlines and that's all they are good for.

Do I butcher myself now and then while in a hurry? Well yeah and that's why I won't touch a straight razor.

The kid in the movie "Breaking Away" didn't shave his legs until he won a race. Since I've never won a sanctioned race I can't shave my legs yet.....That would be like walking your Colagno up a hill in a century ride.

Are 30-somethings allowed to post here?

It was just a few years ago that I started reading online about DE shaving and shave brushes. I first bought a cheap Burma brush from Meijer, and then added a trio of old Gillette safety-bar razors (two Techs and one Superspeed) I got in a lot on eBay. I've since added a badly brassed Old Type open comb and an Omega brush. I was shocked at how the Old Type can very nearly take a thick, long beard off in one stroke!

I had enough luck with this array and some Proraso Ultra-Sensitive in the tub that my wife hopped on eBay and bought a Lady Gillette and helped me choose a brand of blades (Sharp) to order a hundred or two of off of Amazon. Her mom nearly killed herself laughing when I mentioned I'd joined a wetshaving Internet message board!

Show him ---------------- keep using that razor for another 30+ years, and keep riding that titanium bike!!!!!

BTW I have picked my end. At the age of 102 they will find me dead pulled of the side of a bike path on my trike. I will have a smile on my face!!!

My old man had a DE, but gave that up for an 'injector' SE. I started out with a Injector, then Trak II... But once I went electric, I never looked back -- until I grew a full beard for the winters since I work outdoors (mail carrier). My beard is so thick and wiry that when it is an inch long, there is no way to dig the fingernails in for a scratch! The OldMan won a beard-growing contest in college - so I guess I know where mine came from! Oh, and what's up with the red beard on a blonde guy? My mixed Scandinavian heritage showing?

Back-on-topic... Oh yeah, beard. I had to go back to blades to trim the cheeks and neck. I hate trimming!!! Your typical disposable lasts two shaves, max, on my thick forest. The Trak-IIs are long gone, so it is Mach 3 now... but they only last a week or so...

Heck, my regular daily stubble can wear out the heads on an electric in just six months!

I was just wondering because I hardly think about razors when I am riding. But I do think of a lot of daily things when I am stuck inside when the weather is against me.

I started with a DE safety razor. After a number of years I ended up using the Gillette Mach 3 cartridge system. Disposable multi edge are much harsher. I've also got a cordless three blade rotary by Panasonic for about $170.
A few months ago I got the mug, horse-hair brush, and DE razor. It's ok but not an improvement. The shaves take longer, are not more comfortable, and are not as close as the Gillette. The DE, however, compares well to the cordless.

Shaving legs for cycling - not for me.

Interesting thread. I was on the more-blades-is-better (and a lot more expensive) treadmill for years, then started using Bic single-edge disposables. MUCH closer shave than I was getting with any of the multi-blade cartridges.

Haven't used a DE blade in years, but would like to give them a try again, as I'm willing to bet that I'd be happy with them. However, I looked all over for DE blades not long ago (to make a tool for a woodworking project) and had to use an SE blade instead.

Same here. I've tried all of the multi-blade things and even electric but always go back to my trusty Bic. I shave in the shower too and until this past Christmas had always just used body wash to lather up. My gal pal gifted me some Crew shaving gel and I must say it works even better. I find it very easy to shave in the shower with no mirror and the steam softens the beard during my shower so it's a nice smooth shave.

As far as the legs go? I let my gal pal have a little fun since she seems to think it is so funny. She bought a old time barber straight blade and giggles the whole time she shaves my legs. Hey anything to keep them happy right?!?!
