Arthritis

lately i've been having hip pain that is starting to affect my biking. I think it is arthritis. Do any of you have arthritis and what do you do about it?

It is quite possible that this pain is caused by your IT band getting tight - a common effect of bicycling.

You need to do hip stretches - lying on your back and pulling one knee and ankle towards you while the other stays on the ground and holding for 60 seconds, then the other leg/knee/ankle - and there are other hip stretches - google and you will find many youtubes, etc.

But, most importantly is to get a firm foam cylinder and - using your body weight - roll on this knee to hip back and forth on the outside of your leg. It may hurt a bit at first, but your IT band only needs to stretch a tiny bit to relieve pain. Here is an excellent youtube.

Also, bridges are important as hip flexors tend to get weak while bicycling.

I do these daily. They REALLY helped me.

Thanks Dnvrfox but the pain is on the inside of the hip near the crotch in front not on the outside.

I would suggest a good PT - very likely a muscle imbalance/tightness of some sort.

BTW, it is good to stretch ones IT Band and hips, and do bridges.

what you describe is more typical of arthritis in the hip joint than of muscle or tendon pain. Most people don't realize how deeply internal the actual hip joint articulation is.

I've developed a case before I started back into riding. I think it came from twisting while walking because of a callus on my right foot from shoving into the side of caged road pedals for so many years. (I have a lot of toe out on the right side especially) Well I use "Moleskin" padding around that now and an extension on the right side of my crankset but still have a little soreness in my right leg, all the way up to my butt, while sitting sometimes. I don't think riding seems to complicate it any. It might actually be good for it.....At least I tell myself that because it doesn't affect my riding.
