Bought a new bike for the coming winter, a Diamant Mammut. It is the same bike (with a few changes) Bikesdirect is selling. The bike is developed by a Norwegian Sportshopchain. Took it out for 50 miles of gravelgrinding and some singletrack today. It is heavy ! But I got through some rocky singletrack that I have never ridden before. Looking forward to try it on snow.

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.
Those are some seriously fat tires. What size are they?

I commute all winter long but there are only a very few days where heavy (deep) snow gets trampled or rutted but never plowed along my route. Those are the days I can't ride the bike. It is very much like trying to ride in sand. I wonder if big tires will really help those situations. In fresh snow I'm fine and suspect skinny is much better up to ~10 inches. Beyond that I wonder if any tire would work.

Wide tires are fun to ride in the snow. This is not my bike. A vendor at an event out ski patrol was hosting brought it up with him. He let several of us take it on the x-country trails for a spin. The road was covered with melting ice, and it handled the conditions well. There was several feet of snow on the trails iwth a breakable crust. The bike did OK until it broke through the crust, and then you were high centered. I doubt if you would try riding that stuff in normal riding. This happens to be a Surly Pugsly with 4" tires. Have fun!!
