Brompton-like vertical fold bikes?

Hello! I'll soon be starting college and I am wanting to step into the folding bike scene.
I've been combing the internet for bikes that are similar to the brompton's vertical fold and cheaper (price range <500) and still easy to find in california. I'm really looking at the Dahon Jifo, or if I do go with a classic fold, the Dahon Mariner, or a Citizen Tokyo...

Anyone have any off brand brompton alternatives, that are good to upgrade too? Thanks!

nothing in that pricerange below 500 ...
Jifos are 900 ish but all are sold out since a long time

MAriner is nice but fetches a little more than 500.... Dahon Vybe c 7 all sold out .... but interesting alternatives from Tern below your price point ...

Bikes: 2X dualdrive Mezzo folder, plus others

Mezzo is an easier bike to upgrade than a brompton. But they only had a short spell en available in US and simular price afaik. Else birdie, brezzer(space genie)not great but very upgradable if cheap(agree put the money in to a brommie rather than upgrade a brezzer). There is the 12" king of folders. "Who else wants one of these " thread that's much smaller folded and in your price range.
Basically you need to buy used and/or spend more to get something decent.

Don't forget Bike Friday.

They usually command a pretty penny, but every once in a while a cheaper one shows up on the used market.

Just Bike Fridays, rear fold is to the side, Tikit is their quick fold bike..

UK and SEA have Upgrade parts for Bromptons.. the Swiss Mountain drive crank to double the low gear ranges on the low side,

My 3 speed hub is used twice 6 individual gears.. though Swiss made products are not cheap.

and all those Swiss bank deposits don't help the CHF in exchange rate either..

Caspian Terns are not popular, as they compete with the Fishermen, For Fish .
