The first point is true for a SA 8 hub. Which is ideal for a small wheeled bike as 1 st is direct and the rest geared up afaicr.

Shimano 8 speed is upgeared from about 5.

Secound point is correct if you have a nexus 8 direct drive is about 5. Aa reasonable cruising gear. Dual drive hubs (cassette and 3 speed ihg) mean that you can use 9 speeds in direct drive.

Well...the Shimano 8 is direct in gear 5, and that's the Shimano 8's most efficient gear. Gear 6 is a single gear train up: a relatively small mechanical inefficiency. Gear 4 is a large ratio gear down double compounded with a medium gear ratio back up: a relatively large inefficiency, and the Shimano 8's least efficient ratio. Can you guarantee you'll do most of your riding in gear 5?

Advice: don't sweat it. Nobody worries about using 9T cog Capreo derailleur gearing, and that's less efficient than what we're talking about here.
