From what I've read, I'm finding the 2016 Birdy Rohloff model to be of interest (reputably a more compact fold and stronger frame than the older models). Is there any place in the continental US that markets and services they bike?

You can try Bfold in New York.

Brompton, Birdy and Reach are all in their listing, however Rohloff version might need to wait.

It's a shame that Birdy has been so unsuccessful at marketing in the US. The one local bike shop that used to carry the line discontinued doing so as in two years they hadn't sold one! That contrasts in their success in selling Bromptons and Terns...

I used to sell Birdy.. they didn't fly off the shelf, but I sold a few around the SF Bay Area .. I'd contact Anja at rad-innovations.com (Birdybike) .. they were the US Distributors and now selling direct .. may even have your preferred model in stock..

Urban Bike Fitters in Fremont, CA sells Birdy. I test rode one there several months ago.

The Fremont location (with Birdys available to demo) should work out very well for me. I can plan a "road trip" through that area on my way south in the Fall.
