Upgrading stems on folders.

Starting a new thread since I do not want to hijack the Piccolo thread. Thor said something about using an adaptor on older bikes to fit a newer ahead stem. I remember this being a topic before but have searched and could not find it. Are we talking regular quill to ahead stem adaptor for a start or do I need an adaptor with innside threads at the top? I can not find anything to look at around here so I need to buy online.

I do not mind using a fair quality quill stem but can not find them. Bought one some yrs ago and it was so crappy I did not know it was possible to stay in buisness selling such poor quality items. Would not donate it to my worst enemy.

I have an old Brompton stem laying around but it is the wrong size quill.

I want to upgrade the stem on my 1960`s detatchable granny electric conversion. Becouse of the wires (front motor battery in the rear) it is no longer fully detatchable, I need to keep it together when I detatch it to fit in my car. Since the stem is also DIY detatchable (much like a BF detatchable stem but quill) it is difficult to fold and lift and transport without damaging wires. A folding stem would be heaven.

I ended up converting this bike since it was all steel and it was easy to put an BMX fork on it to be sure it was strong enough for the job.

Could somebody provide some links to old threads or pix of what can be used? Upgrading older folders and stems especially used to be a topic in the past, especially all the R20 threads.

thank you.

Here's a video about upgrading from quill stem to threadless. This guy's videos in general are excellent.

To find a vendor, just google "quill stem adapter".

Thank you. If it is a regular quill stem adapter I think I`ve got one already.

Guess I was more wondering what sort of stem can fit on top of that adapter. I know some of the folder stems have threads innside the head tube.

Thank you leoho5. I guess this is the easyest and lightest solution. been searching ebay myself from time to time but not much luck. I would think there is a big marked for stems like this out there.

Thank you, nice ones, especially the black one. It is much like the one I have on my white folder and I really like my white folder. There is no "lump" at the bottom of this stem and that suits an older bike better (bco slim head tube), but there is no "buy now" button on the site so I guess I need to start Googeling.
