622 vs 406: just wanted to share...

Like Thugpipe, I decided I have too much money weighing me down, and I've caught the 29"er bug, so I decided to start building an expedition tourer on that wheel platform (on Surly ECR). Got the rims yesterday, Velocity Blunt 35. Here's a comparo of the 622 rims vs. 406 wheels.

Well, a 29" rim with a 3.00" tire will eat most surfaces for breakfast with not so much as a burp, but it won't be as spritely as a 20" wheels with Kojaks, that's for sure...

nothing against BF (though I've never been particularly interested in one either. made in Oregon means nothing to me, and the BF owner tribalism puts me off), there are courses for 406 wheels, and there are courses for 622 wheels. no way a 406 wheel will eat up some terrain like a 622 wheel.

Significant Difference

They are the Only Folding type bike, Made in several Sizes, to fit the rider . all the others make one product and the rider has to adapt to them.

Brompton makes 1 frame length.. Bike Friday makes 8.

that's very true though, once you go off road anyone even thinking a 406 wheel is just as good as a 622 is pretty much deluding themselves. hitting roots and rocks would deflect much better on a big wheel vs the smaller one all day long. Even I myself tested this fast gravel path run near where I live and my folder with Big apples could never beat my time with my mountain bike with also 2" wide tires. It just seems to "float" alot better at speed.

You'll notice that threads get derailed not via evolution of subject matter, but by criticisms of the OP's choice of topics. This isn't a thread asking if the bike Friday is better/worse than x/y/z. And no one asked for a Brompton comparison either,...

Now, my 29'er floats over the sandy terrain where I live. My much loved 20" folders sink & slide all over the place. I luv "em,...but my 29'er is king! My 26" TernJoeP24 would be close, if I weren't paranoid the frame were going to snap in half.

I've indulged in bespoke suiting in the past, but I know that bespoke is not the only way to dress well or comfortably.

I park my 700cc DS 8.5 right next to my 20" folder. The size difference does catch my eye.
Although, I think there is much more contrast in wheel size, than overall size. Unless the folder is folded, then it is dramatic.

I think a good way to put it, is..... As a relative newcomer to folders and 20" bikes, I am impressed with what a 20" can handle.
That said, there is a reason for 29ers, 700cc, and all types of full sized bikes.

Abu, I am interested in your expedition/tourer build. That is how I set up my DS, to handle the rigors of a long haul, and a variety terrain.
I know you have done plenty of trekking around Bali on your folders and I know you have said you were into mountain biking in the past.
I trust you have a good idea what you want for this expedition build.

I have too many questions to list, here in the folder forum. Such as, will you run racks front and back? panniers? suspension?

Given it is a full sized build, will you post the info in another forum?

Good luck, hopefully we will see a side x side picture in the completed state.

different wheel sizes ride differently. different frame rides differently. and we wanted to try them all
thats why some cyclist have the tendency to go n+1 and cant stop.

I also think you should post in another section of the forum. It looks like it will be an exciting build,...

It'll be based on a Surly ECR steel frame with a 1x11 drivetrain and Velocity Blunt 35 rims. The rims will allow me to run 1.65" to 3.00" rubber. It'll look something like this, with tan Brooks panniers and honey saddle, and Ergon cork grips...
