Spokes for 20" wheels?

Hi Guys,

Getting new wheels for our Bike Fridays, and am not able to locate spokes in the correct size. Need 188 and 185mm.

Suggestions?

Also, mostly I find spokes only in even number sizing. Should I then get 1mm more or less than 185?

within 1 mm should be fine, , err long, if a single wall rim file off what sticks up.

In the US, I get spokes from Dan's Comp. Ridiculously good prices. A shop with a spoke threading machine could always make you spokes in specific lengths. But within a mm is typically good enough.

Sheldon rounds up.

Wheelbuilding

Most spoke calculators give results to the tenth of a mm, but spokes are usually sold in 1 mm size increments (some brands only in 2 mm increments.) Generally, I round upward to the nearest available larger size. The length is not super-critical, but it is worse to have spokes a bit too long than a bit too short. If spokes are too long, they prevent you from using the screwddriver. Unless a rim has recessed spoke holes, you will have to file off protruding spoke ends to avoid their puncturing the inner tube. The right-side spokes of a dished rear wheel are ideally 1 or 2 mm shorter than the left-side spokes.

Thanks guys.

I checked Dan's, and only on phone orders. Need to see if they accept a foreign credit card.

That's right regarding the phone. They're pretty meticulous to ensure that the order is placed correctly.

Issue for me is speaking and understanding 'American' ;-)

I think I'll get my wife to place the order.

Card Visa or Master-Charge? I should think name of issuing bank should not matter ..

it clears the charges thru the card processing, or it does not..

But of course Dan's comp is the seller not me..

@ my LBS they get Canadiens buying stuff & tourists from other countries , too ..

One of the foremost authorities in the USA on folding bicycles is also one of the foremost authorities on spokes. See:

it's good to know that even though thorusa is busy selling spokes at interbike he always has a proxy here to praise him and posts links to his business website. good job!

That's hysterical. I was once at a conference where an Indian, South African and myself were up front all speaking "English". That was difficult for all of us.
