In the various threads involving Brompton a common negative point is often it not being comfortable for long rides. I have also seen a few blogs describing long rides but no mention of any great discomfort.

My question is, are Bromptons okay for a long ride ( 60 - 80 Ks / 40-50 miles a day) assuming the fit is fine, the roads smooth etc. Quite few of the blog writers have Brooks seats. Is this the trick?

Yes in my opinion. And certainly if you have a good fit. There are people traveling the world on them. Ive done 60klm on my single speed Bromie, im 63.I have a Allo Haber adjustable stem extender on mine so i can move bars ahead or back as i see fit, for reach. But there are plenty on here who are going to argue that its not if you wait just a while.

I have done 78 miles on one single shot on my Brompton. I am planning on doing 1/2 centuries on a regular basis on my new 2010 project (Brompton S2) and eventually a few 100 mile events. PBP has been completed on Bromptons (1200km).

It is a doable thing.

My M3L & M5R both are very comfortable to ride and slower pace due to higher rolling resistance on smaller wheels. I also tried long rides with my Dahon Speed Pro & Helios SL. The saddle on the Speed Pro made bruises on my butt after riding over the Golden Gate Bridge and back to the city in San Francisco. My M3L also got the Brooks B66 installed. Brooks saddle is a must on Brompton in my opinion in order to enjoy long rides. I highly recommend Brompton if you do not mind the challenge on replacing tire and/or tube on the rear wheel.

It depends what you compare it to. My S6L with mini bar ends fits me perfectly, and stationary is more comfortable than any of my other bikes, which is an important reason why I've decided not to have any other bikes. Possibly if my other bikes fitted properly, the tourer would be the most comfortable, with the mountain bike a close second. The cheap hybrid had a harsher ride than the Brompton.

70 km is no problem at all. Did do that many times and sometimes (holidays) 14 days in a row

Actually got mine from Thor as well.Good guy to deal with.You will like it,you can stretch out or quickly change it for uprite,very handy.You will no doubt notice i mounted mine differently than your pictures show.Had to do mine the way i have it because the larger diameter on bar wasnt long enough to mount any differently.

I am planning on mounting mine like you did yours, which is identical to the pictures on the Dahon demos (Thor site). I really need the extra cockpit room for GPS and light system.

what gps system will u be getting?

I currently use a Garmin 310xt with cadence sensor and a handlebar mount. Works great for both running and biking.
