Glad you're in one piece.

Presuming you didn't run the stop sign and the driver did, I hope you got the driver's insurance details. With that much damage to the bike, there's a good chance the frame is bent or damaged too. I'd get that that checked by an LBS who knows Brompton's well.

I took it to the only brompton dealer in illinois, were i bought the bike from. I don't wanna say too much to avoid it being unfairly used against me in any legal proceedings.

I don't want to give out too much information, but i was able to talk with my insurance agent and he was able to let me know that I'm not at fault. I don't want to file a claim as that will cost more than the repair costs. But i might just do that if my mechanic says that the frame is compromised.

So, I am looking to take a bike on the metra during rush. Sadly, my folding bike won't fold in the middle. Just the handlebars and saddle.

The recommendation is to bag it?

Here's what I have:

If all it folds is the handlebars and the steering I'm thinking it's going to be quite an ungainly package and the bag would have to be the size of the unfolded folding bike minus the height of the steering and saddle. Might be quite a big package for using it during rush hour, it seems like the bike was allowing a semi fold for easier storage mostly instead of commuting in mind.

I've never seen that bike before, could you post a link showing how it folds and some dimensions? Can you completely remove the seatpost? would you be willing to invest in folding or quick release pedals? Without know your bikes dimensions i would suggest the following options
1) Strida
2) Xootr ( most likely won't work)
3) Tikit (most likely will work)
4) Dahon ( scroll down for a couple of options)
5) Garbage bag ( but it offers no protection what so ever)

I hope this helps. I think quick release and folding pedals will be a good investment as well.
Also, were do you usually sit? I find the first set of forward facing seats in the handicapped cars to be the most useful. Some people suggest the overhead luggage areas on normal cars if you can properly scure the bike to it, you don't want it to fall on anyone. I've not tried this option.

What cost are you talking about?

I forgot the details, but if you were not at fault, then you file a claim with the driver's insurance company. Shouldn't cost you anything.

If if there were injuries, I suggest you consult a lawyer, as much as I hate to say it.

No fault has been officially assigned and officer wrote "no damage" for my bicycle on the police report. it's been almost a week since my bike is been at the shop and i didn't have the sense to get the police report corrected to file a claim. for now the repair costs are under 200 so I can afford to fix it on my own. But if it was going to be more than 200 i would have filed claim.

I don't think the OP was thinking 'new bike' as an option, but I just wanted to point out that a Swift with folding pedals is actually pretty good for trains. The footprint of the bike is very thin and can slid into a surprising number of tight spots. It is a taller package though so it doesn't do as well when you trying to put it into some racks that racks that are designed for conventional luggage.

Having said that, the OP's bike might work in a similar way with folding pedals.

Definitely bag it though.

I didn't mean to suggest a new bike, just the bag

That looks like it might be long but narrow when folded. If you can find a decent bag for it, no one is going to know what it is and will just think you have some luggage or tools with you. Do you usually have a good selection of seats to choose from where and when you get on your Metra line? If you can usually get the seats on the first level at the end that face each other that would be ideal. I always see people sitting in those seats with oversized stuff next to them or in the seat across from them.

I've never gotten a shot with it folded. the handlebars fold flat, and the saddle pushes all the way down to the top tube.

Do you have suggestions on decent folding pedals? I didn't mind the ones that came on my a-bike. Though the rest of the bike was trash.

Yeah, I am one of the first stops on my train. So I pretty much have the run of the joint. I was thinking the side facing seats on the washroom side of the ADA cars. I could probally stand the bike on end next to the seat and not take up any extra space.

Those seats would work fine, especially if you were next to the trash recepticle and you don't usually have a disabled rider using that area. I would even try it a few times out of the bag to get the conductors feel for it. I regularly see Metra users on the Mil District West line with folders w/o bags. They don't seem to get any flak.
