especially true if you open the internal gears and clean them from dust and sand regulary ...............its not that dificult, you will need a couple special tools, a nice workbench , a parts cleaner, special oil depending on what can and what manufacturer ...
what I am saying is that a regular no frills derrailleur bike is MUCH easier to bend back or fix with zip ties and duck tape, plus u can find a halways working derrailleur all over the world....
I am not against Internal gears. I like them ..I have more bikes with cans than with derrailleurs. but sometimes a quickly spoken word needs a little counterpoint ....
Its not wikipedia out there in the real world....

Im probably going to grab something on the cheaper side now that I have been looking for a bit. Was checking out maybe getting a Dahon Boardwalk S1, Dahon Speed P8, or a Tern Link P24H.
I understand the price difference between the Boardwalk and the Link. If the quality is worth the price, then I can handle it.
What is everyone's thoughts on those bikes?

Only problem I have with this bike is that I am pushing the height and weight limits on it. Im currently 200 lbs and working out, so I could end up going either way on weight.

From a one speed to a 24 speed? I have the Speed Uno and for the price it is a quality bike with the potential for upgrades. I will be upgrading to gears in the future as it has track dropouts making this easy. I had the Boardwalk and upgraded it was was not satisfied with the bike itself. The Uno has been my favorite for the money.

After the wife yelled at me for trying to buy the Link P24H, I had to go cheaper until my feet are sufficiently wet. Ended up buying a Dahon Speed Uno from Thor, along with the BioLogic Portage Post Rack, BioLogic Commute Bag, and BioLogic Airflow Saddle. Next on my list is a Samsonite Hard-side Suitcase. I'll post pictures as soon as I get a hold of it (which will be around the 28th).

The best bike for you would likely be a Bike Friday Pocket Llama. It is a strong, high quality machine with a high bottom bracket and it takes tires up to 1x1.75 wide, both of which would be great for your riding conditions. You can disassemble it and pack in an airline legal suitcase. Unfortunately a new one plus suitcase and packing materials would cost close to twice your budget.
Hi everyone! I have recently been bitten by the folding bike bug so to speak. I am currently deployed and was searching for solutions to transport around base and when I get home. My biggest concern at first was shipping a bike to Kuwait and then back home. Of course this is how I found out about foldies.
I have been trying to research all the different bikes out there, including reading many posts here, but I can't find many guides as to what to look for when buying one that helps me. So I come to you now hoping I can get some of your great advice.
Currently I would only be riding 1/2 mile to work and riding for exercise/enjoyment. When I get home it will be used as my main transport around town. I am Approx. 6' tall 200 lbs (hoping to drop about 20 of that by the end of my tour.) The environment is very sandy with some spots of loose gravel. My budget is around $1000 and I am willing to be flexible either way to help cover the initial shipping costs. I am not very bike savvy, but I am very willing to learn the ins and outs of bikes. (I have a decent amount of free time here)
That's about it I guess. I greatly appreciate any advice you guys can give.

I think, judging by the pics, our bod has made his purchase about three posts back. :-)
We await, with baited breath, reports of how the single cogger fares in the desert sands of Kew-wait. Sealed bottom bracket and wheel hubs sound good, though.
