A Brompton appreciation thread ? You have to be joking, this is almost a Brompton appreciation forum these days !

My first Brompton was stolen by a thief, my second wast lost in a separation agreement (same thing as the first really), unsurprisingly i have no plans to buy a third.

In general yes, now that i have my pensioners freedom pass, but you may be surprised to know that it's not complusory to ride Bromptons in London, it's ok to ride other makes.

Yes, but the 62% duty on imported bikes certainly gives Brompton primogeniture.

Not sure I know what primogeniture is supposed to mean, but even with your suggested 62% duty on imported bikes, Brompton are still more expensive than almost all other 16" wheeled folding bikes on sale in the UK. The BF Tikit, if it is still sold here, kicked off at about £1000, but i would doubt a bike imported from US would attract 62" duty.

Actually, I don't set tax policy for the UK. But, hey, it's great for Bulgarian employment.

I reckon Brompton could cut costs by ~40% by moving the factory from London to Glasgow.

A curiously pedantic comment by the poster who once made the "Fichtel & Sachs Gotha Coburg" joke.

What I like about it that is is very functional out-of-the-box. Small fold, decent gear range (30-90 GI on mine), decent ride quality (rear suspension), reliable (2k miles and no issue yet) and good spare part availability. I don't plan any mod, it works very well for me as is. I just replaced the saddle and grips.

I don't own one yet, but have two on order for my wife and me. Bought the Brompton for use on multimodal travel. I know that there are other bikes suited to this purpose but I could not find what I thought would be a better choice. As an example, here's a brief preliminary itinerary for a 16 day trip planned for September.

Fly into Barcelona.
Transit to city center. Rides along Las Ramblas, the beach etc. tram to Tibidabo and ride down to city, assorted subway connections. Possible day trip north on bus to the Dali museum.
Ferry to Mallorca. Ride on the south part of the island and kick back on beaches.
Fly from Palma to Bilbao. Spend 1/2 day cruising Bilbao and bus to San Sebastian. Ride around for a couple of days and bus to Pamplona. Ride the route of the bull run and then head out on the Camino de Santiago. Spend a couple of days riding the camino and wine tasting in Rioja.
Arrive in Burgos and bus to Salamanca for a couple of nights.
Bus or train to Madrid. Use transit in town - parks, plaza, tapas etc.. Day trips via train or bus to Toledo and Segoiva.

We'll use t-bags as our only luggage but will have small packable backpacks as needed temporarily for picking up provisions. I m sure that other bikes could be used but the Brompton seemed the best choice to us, for a trip like this.

I have usually hung out in the tandem forum but spent quite a bit of time lurking here and you all are a helpful, informative and entertaining group. I hope to be able to start participating more.

I think the Brompton will really give you what you need.

One suggestion... since you're moving around so much, things can happen, accidents can occur, maybe parts go missing or get damaged, particularly during transit or baggage handling. I'd bring along a few choice tools and spare parts.
- spare tube
- frame connectors when the bike is folded
- extra hinge bolt lock - to me, this is the most critical piece because the bike is useless if you can't lock it out to use as a full size bike and the piece is probably the easiest to lose - they're only $10 or so

Have fun!

How long have you been waiting for your bikes? Just wondering because I ordered one ten weeks ago. They told me at the time to exect to wait for up to three months. A guy in the Brompton Talk forum said it took twenty weeks for his to be delivered! Can't wait to get mine!
